Students impress Ferrari judges
Three Coventry University students are to help invent a Ferrari of the future after being picked to work alongside the firm's top designers.
Rob Battams, Tom Hardman and David Imai reached the last four of a prestigious competition in Italy and have now been offered work experience.
The university put forward its concept for the Fiorano, described as a "lean, athletic" vehicle, to the judges.
Automotive design schools from around the world came up with plans.
The team from the university's School of Art and Design submitted five quarter-scale proposals to take on designs from Tokyo, Detroit and the European Institute of Design in Turin.
Two cars from Turin and one from Tokyo joined the Coventry car in the final line-up for awards.
The Fiorano is said to pay tribute to the Ferraris of the 1960s and is inspired by the experiences of tandem biplanes and Olympic bobsleds.
David Browne, one of the university's principal lecturers in design, went to Italy with the students for the awards ceremony in Maranello.
He said: "Obviously we're on cloud nine. We were all very tense and emotional because the standard was so high.
"Then to have one of our designs chosen as one of the final four was just amazing.
"For these young designers, it is an opportunity of a lifetime to work with the world's best car designers."
