If it's an automatic transmission just keep it in D. The car will choose the most appropriate gear based on your speed and incline. The technical reasoning is that you need more torque which means it needs to be in a lower gear. And yes, do NOT go down to L (which I presume is your D3) when the car is moving.

@nishan: yes machang, but there's a lot of newbies who come here repeating the same question a dozen times. And when we ask them to do a search, some people get all itchy. So the objective is to simply give the link to this thread the next time someone asks a repeat question. I've bookmarked it already @Davy: Yes, I put it in DIY to add a bit o humor to the whole thing

In addition to using the forum's search, you can use Google's powerful search capabilities to look for whatever you want on AutoLanka. And it's very simple and you'll get better and faster results as opposed to opening a new thread. Go to Google and type "site:autolanka.com" followed by whatever you want to search for. If you want to search "Power Shutter Repair" for example: site:autolanka.com power shutter repair You'll get everything you need in the Google search result. It goes without saying but it works for other websites too....

Members with similar problems were directed to some shops along Darley Road. Do a search and you'll find the details of the shop/electrician. -
Any Type Of Advice On Buying And Selling Cars ?
Watchman replied to Rajitha4774's question in Car Buying Information
Firstly, you have to realize you can't start a whole business with the cost of just one car. And secondly very risky. You sound very young. If you don't mind me asking, how old are you and what do you do right now? (cos your age, experience, and the amount of time you can put into this makes a big difference) You will certainly be able to buy a car and sell a car, but the objective is to make a profit, right? So you have to ask why would someone pay you more for the car when they could have paid less and bought it from the guy you bought it from? If you're hoping that the car will simply appreciate in time then you're in for a bad time/business. You can't expect to profit with ZERO value addition. So from what you say I take it you're working with a budget of about 4.0-5.0 million? Your best bet would be to buy toyota corolla or a nissan sunny (simply because they are fast moving) from maybe the early or mid 1990. Buy a cheap one that needs some tinkering / painting / engine works and fix it up. Being a mainstream car like a corolla/sunny from that generation it wont have too many fancy electronics so the fix should be fairly easy. Once you've done that the car can easily be sold for much more. Price it accordingly, and sell it. You can them move on to the next car, and with each car you'll become better at doing up the car and you'll be able to take on larger projects and more complex ones. Pretty much the wheeler-dealer business model.- 11 replies

Didn't you read the part where he said that you have been given warning's from all FOUR moderators? The point is that this is their forum and we have to learn to respect their rules. So if you stopped demanding respect for yourself for a moment and showed some respect to the forum, then you might not have that many warnings. We all have been warned not to do stuff by mods. In fact, quite a few of my posts (replying to sylvi) have been deleted by mods saying that I was going over-board or I was going OT. You don't here me complaining right? So be humble enough to take this as a learning opportunity.

Registration Of New Permit Vehicles Restricted!
Watchman replied to edsal's topic in General Automotive
I'm curious too.. so does this apply to just permit vehicle transfers or ALL transfers? Cos though I see the reasoning behind the need for such a letter, I dont know why it would be limited just to permit vehicles. PS: Mazda Axela, machang are you and sylvi real-life brothers? -
Hi Sylvi, Why don't you take your personal animosities out of this equation and look at this objectively. A person's profession has nothing to do with how much regard he/she has for the life of another human being. So why do you have to bring up a person's profession into this? Remember one thing though. When there's a major accident on the road its not rich folks in BMWs and Mercedes (and Omnis) who come help the victims, it's the simple common man on a motorcycle, three-wheeler that come to help.
-
Dear Mods, As of post #23 (Sylvi's) this thread has been thrown to the dogs. Maybe you could move everything from #23 to the 'help help i'm being abused' thread.
-
So are you saying you'd rather your loved one die in a preventable motor accident and collect a millions in compensation as opposed to your loved ones NOT dying? And the above discussion had nothing to do with insurance. It was about vehicle safety. Where's Sylvi's Maruti Omni going? Coconuts in the back.

And it's an awesome prank car.

Sylvi, not all new members get 'bashed'. Just the lazy ones or the cocky ones. And if you actually bothered to look, Rehana has been a member for close to 2 years. That hardly counts as a 'new member', don't you think. It's interesting that Rehana suggests a points system where the community can rate members. And it's also interesting to see how the community has rated you (sylvi) and Rehana. So by Rehana's own measuring stick you two are bad members And if it's a community of stupid and dumb people, why are you so persistent on being part of it? I'm sure there are many other international forums with smart people, don't you think? And sylvi, if you want to keep kicking that dead horse about people calling you uncle, please realize that in Sri Lanka we refer to elders/seniors as uncle or aiya as a sign of respect. it's not because they are related to us. So realize that all this animosity started with your misunderstanding of that sign of respect. There are people here who DO respect and look upto you, so i'm refraining from posting your true vulgar nature in public. But if you wish to go down this path, I can play hardball too. So take this as my final warning to you.

Firstly, this has nothing to do with insurance. Secondly. what's the point of having a good policy if you're not alive to enjoy it. Being wealthy as you claim to be, why would you put your wife and daughter in a van which could easily kill them when you can afford something that will protect them better. Even if you have the best insurance policy in the world, if your wife or daughter died in an unsafe vehicle, all you would get is money. What good is more money (for a rich person like you) if you've sacrificed the lives of your loved ones.
-
But in cases like his where it was a limited time offer, the opportunity cost is something they can't refund
-
OT: You know Sylvi, there's a limit you can push your innocent victim card. If you really want to, I can share with the others the filthy PMs that you have been sending me.

Seriously? Typing Ctrl+T, and typing "site:autolanka.com es8" is annoying?

Frankly I think there's a side of the story that the OP isnt telling us. I mean seriously, who BUYS a vehicle to use for just a few weeks? And who cares what the 'face' looks like if you won't be seeing it ever again after those few weeks. And for someone who was so persistent on re-sale value of a vehicle he uses on the long run he's awfully optimistic about the resale of a Jimny. Anyway, based on what the OP is telling us, the simplest solution would be to go would be to just rent a 4WD double cab which will be even more capable than a RAV4 or a Jimny and will give a lot more creature comforts than a Toyota BJ or a mitsubishi throughout your trip.

Oh man, it really is amazing how creative everyone has been to go around the nose height rule. But I guess over the first few races everyone will end up on one or 2 designs that prove to be the better ones.

Off roading and observing wild life are 2 very different things, and most of our national parks these days are so crowded with people such that most of the regular roads in the parks have got decent surfaces. So good that most tour operators use those 2wd Tata pickups. Maybe one of the more avid wild-life fan can comment on the parks. But if you DO go deep into the forest you will get some heavier off-roading opportunities, but it's not very polite to go into the forest and create a commotion as you're not supposed to disturb the wildlife. And I doubt vehicles like the Samurai change hands so frequently, so you WILL have some trouble selling it off. Again you're better off going for a Mitsubishi.
-
yep, gotta agree with you on that too. In a Sri Lankan context a Samurai would be a bit of a p***y-ride. Even a much more ocmmonly available J32/4DR5 would be more suited for off-roading.
-
Wouldn't a off-roader be cheaper over there and you can enjoy it for more than just a month, am i wrong? And personally I wouldn't do what you're planning to do. All vehicles of this age/range would have a bunch of issues that need sorting out. And you won't know them without a few days/weeks of running. Hence, buying an unknown vehicle, taking it to a remote off-road location and put it in a mud-pit making the vehicle even less accessible is quite risky. Don't you think?

Lancer Or Axio? Update: Bought A Lancer! (Aka The B.r.a.t.t. Thread)
Watchman replied to Bracket's question in Car Buying Information
Are you buying it on a permit? If so bracket stated there you HAVE to go for a A/T. If you're not buying it on a permit, and and you plan to modify it why bother getting a brand new one. You might as well save some money by buying a 2nd hand car. I'm sure your "modifications" will end up discarding a lot components which are in pretty good condition anyway.- 800 replies
