Welcome @Bhanu As @Twin Turbo suggested specialist garages are a place to start Speak to Ultimate Motorworks https://umw.lk/ - they primarily handle BMW's so they would be in a good position to point you in the direction of any decent cars with known history Don't lose sight of the fact that no matter what you buy, it'll be a 15-25 year old German car run in sunny Sri Lanka having passed through a multitude of hands and numerous technicians so leave a margin for a little heartache no matter what ?

The Morris Minor sounds like a good platform for an exercise such as this - lots of local support and a simple vehicle to grasp the fundamentals That said @varotone makes a very good point. @Maligaspe if your nephew is looking to make this his career then perhaps the electronic or mechatronic side of things is where he will need to focus on when you consider what cars are like now so at the very least something with electronic fuel injection, automatic transmission, ABS and a multitude of sensors which are common place on modern cars. Left field suggestion, why not speak to c******o or SLIC - they often advertise vehicles that are insurance write offs - since the primary purpose if for your nephew to learn and since cost is also a concern perhaps something new-ish which he can work towards restoring or at least just getting the mechanicals right? If the car itself remains undrivable due to structural integrity compromises maybe he can just sell off the repaired/restored components piece meal basis at a later point if he doesn't need it?

@pug306xsi do you recall where the double issue was available?

@AVANTE the Symbian OS was brilliant - truly the glory years of Finnish made Nokia! I recall using an i-Mate (made by HTC) with Microsoft's own "Smartphone OS" parallel to the 6600. The 6600 was so far ahead. I remember being impressed by this one messaging app called Agile Messenger which was a consolidator of sorts which let you "chat" on multiple services (Yahoo! , MSN, ICQ etc) using a single platform which included audio &attachments as well. Doesn't sound like much now but in 2004 it was mind blowing stuff ?

Buying a used European vehicle is always a gamble New Land Rovers aren't exactly known for their reliability sadly. I don't have sufficient insight to comment on the Freelander 2 but the 1st generation had known issues with the Viscous Coupling on the 4WD system and the Intermittent Reduction Drive Land Rover Owner Magazine (available locally at Vijitha Yapa) & Land Rover Monthly (both also available online on MAGZTER) are good places to start with enthusiast and longer term user populated buying guides https://www.lro.com/reviews/land-rover-freelander-td4-4x4-review https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/used-cars/used-car-buying-guide-land-rover-freelander-2 https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/land-rover/freelander-2-2006/ Locally the 3.2 I6 was relatively rare- there's one in the classifieds section which i'm sure you must have shortlisted already http://www.autolanka.com/view/land-rover/freelander-2/79994.html Go through the maintenance history - if there are any red flags of problem components that keep cropping up or if the car is an outright lemon, the bills should prove it provided the owner kept it long enough to get it fixed. Be mindful of anything without detailed long term records from a specialist garage that know Land Rovers https://www.carbuyer.co.uk/reviews/land-rover/freelander/sports-utility-vehicle/owner-reviews

Not really - both are equally suspect I'd even argue that some may feel the EC, E_ numbers are worse as it gives the impression that the owners are trying to hide something really sketchy. Perfect example would be old Land Rover series vehicles which have been "rebodied" as post 2000 YOM Defenders The reason cops pull people in those over more frequently than others is because of the sheer volume of illegal modifications carried out on those!

Cinnamon bush! Well played @Gummybr?
-
They advertised their "Milaze" line up of passenger (car) tires extensively on the radio some time back i recall. Wonder if it gained any traction? I'm half curious to see how something like that would perform ?
-
@iRage the cost is definitely an issue Don't forget CE#T and DSI - both make locally right?
-
What did I ever do to you to deserve that @Kavvz?!???
-
@K.o.N.o.S I think we are sorely missing a good local tire test - expensive exercise if done properly but would be interesting to see how things fare under our conditions
-
With my apologies to my old friend @Gummybr, i'll take the ripped bolster @Kavvz thank you kindly ?
-
Good review @kmeeg Looks like i'll need to keep an eye on the tire pressure myself as I switched to LT's on mine
-
Stunning @kmeeg! I thought it was something out of a brochure! ?
-
Certainly, I agree with you on that @Ted We haven't left a margin or rather assigned a value to the individuals time in point 2. Often friends & family ask me if it's worth the time i spend in a garage (even if its preventive maintenance) so for us enthusiasts we may not see it as a burden or cost but there is a time aspect we need to cost out as well There is also a qualitative component to assign value to in terms of public perception Ultimately it boils out to those compromises you mentioned @Ted and the what the individual values, financially or otherwise

Importation of a car older than 3 years old
Devinda_Z replied to Virenmg's topic in General Automotive
Ah the Carnet play! Good one @Kavvz Haven't seen one any time in the recent past though i'll confess There was an old Range Rover Classic on the carnet - but again as you rightly mentioned it isn't the long term solution that @Virenmg is looking for though -
I am speechless (mostly) ??
-
I swear i wasn't passing a hint - tbh i forgot about the AE86??♂️
-
@AVANTE i'm curious to know if any of them actually bother to update anything. @iRage thoughts??

Dear Mr @Sylvi Wijesinghe, Thank you for your detailed response as always. Many of us appreciate the knowledge and anecdotes you share about the past. I for one learned something new today from you regarding the mechanics of the CRA accounts worked in relation to the import of cars so I for one am very grateful for the time and effort you take to post here. Looking forward to hearing more motoring stories from the years gone by. I hope things don't revert back to that era with the limitations we may all have to face for the benefit of keeping the rupee stable (which has clawed back Vs. the $ right now) @Ted's point on another thread is also valid here that new cars have components that can't be repaired and must only be replaced in full. The concept of planned obsolescence which in fact has been under fire from many quarters has had recent legislation challenging it under the "right to repair" framework (https://www.bbc.com/news/business-49884827) If the same is applied to cars perhaps we may see an era where car parts can be repaired instead of replaced which will also give rise to the many industries Mr @Sylvi Wijesinghe mentioned were active back in the day to meet the need then. The problem as @Ted might be able to share insights on as a tech professional is how local technicians can rise to the challenge of being able to handle the repairs of complex electronics. I'm sure the skill set is there given that there are factories which produce mechatronic components locally for export - the question will be if we as a country are ready right now to manage. Anyhow hopefully all of this will only be for a few months ?

Nissan Tiida 2008 strange power steering malfunction
Devinda_Z replied to Casanova's question in Mechanical problems
Congratulations @Casanova You also now have the added peace of mind of the reliability of a nearly new Japanese car which is a massive bonus i'm sure Those Kei's are so spacious inside - never ceases to amaze me how they managed to make them so roomy with those external dimensions!- 24 replies
