  1. I'm not sure I've said this before - but time and time again I realize that when you're sad, frustrated or emotionally down someway or the other a quiet drive can always fix things for you...

      Are you okay ?

Whatever it is I am glad a drive made it feel better (at least momentarily)

@iRageYes. I'm Ok. My mother was in hospital for over 3 weeks and eventually passed away last Monday. The correct music, and taking the longer, more scenic routes home helped ease the anxiety and after her passing it soothed the pain.

@matroska so sorry to hear that ❤️

They say death is the only certainty in life but it is something you can never get prepared for. Enjoy the long drives until the pain gets erased by joyful memories.

  2. Need Advice or an Idea : My friends house was burgled last night and the burglars made off with the Smart Key to his GP1. The grey imported GP1's usually come with 1 smart key and a regular key. The risk is that the car is now vulnerable to be stolen at any time by the burglars. Is reprogramming the car to a new smart key with a new unlock code possible? Any one faced a similar situation?

Update - in case anyone faces this dilemma: Agents have quoted an eye-watering sum (~500,000 LKR) therefore he is looking at getting this done by a third party.

Don't know if the guy can re program but there is a chap near Nugegoda - about 100-200 Meters passing the bridge going towards Maharagama. It's on the left hand side and there is an apartment complex Opposite the shop. Sadly don't have his number. Did u try Pet#o or Advance Audio - Dehiwala ?

      Rs. 500,000/- ??? My %$#@*&

  3. What's up with larger sedans and interior abuse? Most of the 90's Cefiro, Bluebird, Camry/Vista interior bits look like a bunch of sabre toothed tigers had an orgy inside them. This is not the case with the Sunny's Corolla's Starlets and Marches *most of the time*

@MaleCortana Is right, lack of parts is the major plus these cars are hard to come by in Japan too to get the parts. Ours wasnt in a good nick when we got it 17 years ago.

    3. matroska

      matroska

      Thats a clean U13 @Magnum

@MaleCortana you're right ...other than the spares issue - being a non buyya car people are less likely to have resale in mind. Some people buy without proper financial means to maintain  due to the lower price and then leave the cars to rot. It's sad actually- most of these cars have options well before their time and in good nick would be an absolute joy to drive it's a shame they have been abused like this.

    4. iRage

      iRage

@MaleCortana is spot on...it is the context the car is used in and owned in.

As for parts, @Magnum mentioned that it is hard to find parts even in Japan...well..yes but no but yes...back in the day, interior parts, sets were easy to come by back in the day...but now (which is when all these cars actually need the parts) they are hard to come by as there are no old cars in Japan. they've all been shipped outside to countries like Africa (where these old barges have a HUGE market). The lack of parts apply for any old car. Been stocking up parts for my Corolla Wagon....it took 7 months for me to find a set of headlights, grill and tail lights ! On the other hand..there were plenty available in SL...used Japanese ones and new Thai reproductions.

  4. Anyone recommend a upholstery place /fiber shop that can re-upholster a car door - the vinyl bits are warped, cracked and basically hideous - have a look below it's worse when you see it up close

I had an interesting experience while driving down to galle once. I was cruising along at around 180kph when an idiot in a premio pulls out into the fast lane with zero signal or shoulder check. bugger was lucky I had good brakes. The 10 second honk didn't even phase the dumb f*ck, he was proud of his stupidity.

It’s so light, the pickup is quite fun

back in the day I used to travel to Monaragala a lot, plenty of these on the road with various mods with the locality there.

In stock shape, these could keep up with my 4m41 Montero easy until provoked. Some models came with a stock turbo timer as well. Open roads, quite straight and well paved they easily move 120kmph and above there.

    2. matroska

      matroska

Yup it is light. The version i drove did not have power steering either. There's a massive amount of space in the engine bay - the cabin belongs to the 1960's

I guess as Tiv said it's the hard beading + the light door. When I use the same amount of force I'm used to when closing the doors of my car it never closes.

      iRage

Well...you get the EE80H (which subsequently became the AE80H as the 1.3L engines, the 2E and 2A, were swapped), AE81H (with the 1.5L 3A), AE82H (which came with either the 4A-GE or 4A-FE depending on the last 3 digits of the AE82H code) and the CE81H....the body panels, etc are identical between all models except for trim level differences. Mechanically all parts are (for the most part) a direct transfer from the E80 series sedan.

In Sri Lanka there are only a few around...

    3. matroska

      matroska

@Davy and @iRage thanks for clearing that up. I did not believe Aus got that particular version - hence my confusion when someone told me that it was there in Au.  I have seen just one in SL - a red 4 door. BTW  the Corolla FX of the same vintage also got the 1.6 L engine right?

    4. iRage

      iRage

Well...the Corolla hatchback..which is the above car..is the FX. FX stands for FF 2-boX. A 2 box body design is a hatchback...they called it that so that it sounds fancy. In some markets it had the FX name on it..some markets didn't

Actually I stand corrected....unlike the sedan...I don''t think there was an AE80H...only an EE80H where a 1.3L was introduced once the the 12 valve 1300cc, 2E egnine was introduced.

the AE82 hatch (whether it was called FX or Corolla Hatchback) came with the 1.6L 4A engine....it was either the 4A-FE or 4A-GE depending on the trim.

  16. Guys is it possible that RMV back in the old days get the YOM of a car wrong? There's a particular car which says 1981 in the CR but when i cross check the Model number online it falls in a range of cars made in 1984.

I’ve seen an original diesel Montero market as petrol in the book, and a military Land Rover market as Country of origin - japan

and most hatchbacks are marked as sedan, and everything unless brand new marked as * reconditioned*

  17. Turns out there are so many 80's cars now transplanted with Auto gear boxes... and asking for ridiculous prices ?

    2. matroska

      matroska

for instance a March K10 with a swapped auto box for 0.7 + Mil, a Swapped late 80's corolla 2 for around 0.9 M ..the list would go on.

    3. AVANTE

      AVANTE

I'd reckon the autoboxes cost more than the tin boxes they are fixed to ?

  18. Guys - how much trouble would i be asking for  with a late 80's Corolla II with a Diesel Engine?

    1. alpha17

      alpha17

A friend of mine owns a petrol one from the same era. A really nice car to drive but he blowed up the engine after getting it performance tuned by a wrong guy. This car was not in perfect shape. Interior bits started to show their age. It was not taken care of by the previous owners. But all the options worked. Dunno about the diesel. But since it’s a Corolla, will run without much of an issue and any makabass would be able to fix. Or else you can swap a new engine?

    2. matroska

      matroska

@alpha17 - Thanks for the info. Didn't check the particular specimen since it seems to have had a gearbox translpant. There's also this tempting looking 2 door red corolla2 (petrol) unmolested and in great shape

    3. alpha17

      alpha17

@matroska 2 door version looks really cool. My friend's one was not in that much of a good shape. But the engine and gearbox felt bulletproof. We had endless fun with it by doing countless burnouts and speedings over 130+ kmph. The car felt really steady and nimble. After abusing it for around 1.5 years he wanted to tune it for more hp. The work was done by a horrible guy so ended up blowing the engine. Now he had replaced the Turbo engine from a Starlet GT. Also replaced the dashboards with a better one. Now it is better. With the diesel I dunno about the performance. But I think finding spares wouldn't be much of an issue.
