A Message To "some" Hybrid Drivers

I think Nexus moonlights as a porn star. You know, the type that plays a support role in threesomes or Orgies? He sits there on the side and offers encouragements, guidance and applause or in some situations takes one up the pooper for the home team... :)

Harshan, I'm curious. Do you think over the next few years hybrids will "prove" themselves in Sri Lanka, or not? That is, will hybrids in Sri Lanka turn out to be as reliable and trouble-free and durable as the most reliable petrol or diesel cars (or not)?

Might or might not but right now it's too early to judge and all facts are supporting otherwise. Success will depend on lot of factors including infrastructure, road conditions, agent backup and technician know how, spare parts availability. With all that it'll gradually grow up and I don't mind considering a hybrid when all these are in place and after these guinea pigs (you know who) paid their price and find out all pros and cons of hybrids for me (and for others) at their cost. Thank you guys, ehem.

However, petrol hybrids are an interim solution until the diesel hybrids, the most efficient hybrids around the world hits our shores ;)

Did you see the news about the Diesel Hybrid version of the Pug 3008 :) ?

And the 508 has PSA's Stop-Start technology (hopefully the models coming to Sri Lanka will come with it)

apparently a family in UK have set a record for the highest mileage per tank or something, it's very efficient. Start-stop is as good as hybrid in city driving I guess, but you have to compromise A/C for that and PSA introduced start-stop to Citroen first.

You can be unique, just like the 3000 other people who bought hybrids in the last three months?

Someone needs to look up the meaning of "unique"

I mean, "if you get managed it properly, you will have a chance to be unique". with other 2999 hybrid drivers, you won't be a unique, but it will be a unique group. known as "tree hugers" :)

So according to you everyone who buys a hybrid is a tree huger ? WRONG ! while some might actually buy it for environmental reasons most of them are just opportunists.

Only around 5-10% should be called tree hugers, the rest should be called opportunistic cheapskates !

Dude, that is the dumbest comment I've read in a while here and on Prius subjects there are some really stupid comments being made. That is saying something.

Out of curiosity, what do you drive, baller?

Local context due to taxation Mani. Not saying its correct, just background

Wouldn't be a cheapskate either :) Sure it might cost less, but even a hybrid will cost a lot.

yep, you definitely got to have deep pockets to own one of these baby's (especially in SL).But my point was that the only apparent reason one would go for the hybrid instead of the diesel which is more efficient or a higher displacement engine which gives more power is cause of the whole tax scenario.

Anyhow my original comment was aimed at lkgamage who stated that hybrid users should fall under a group called "Tree hugers" :)

Peri,

Here is where I get my pantie in a wad. When a guy come and ask a simple innocent question about his Prius the first post you see is an insult to the guy when his question is absolutely legitimate. Then come all the sheep following the leader bashing the poor guy for merely asking a question about his car. If you don't like the Prius that is fine and you simply don't have to click on the link and move on. Instead, everyone start swinging form each others nut sacks and bash on some poor guy for choosing to buy a Prius. Doesn't this bother anyone else? I find it is in very poor taste to judge an individual who decided to take advantage of an offering from the government, which most of you would do given the right circumstance, and he is looked down up-on. He/she's been called all kind of names and insulted. To further the issue, then we post BS as an answer to his/her question. Then come the horde taking turn insulting or talking carp about the owner.

I think it shows the character of some people and their upbringing when they feel good about talking bad to someone who's not as 'fortunate' as they are.

As an example, take this entire thread in context and see what I mean.

I don't know man but it take a hell of a lot for me to 'beat up' on someone who's 'weaker' than I am and I most definitely find no amusement or satisfaction in doing so.

Stig, I don't understand how you can call anyone who spends Rs.4000000+ on a car an opportunistic cheapskate.

They are being financially smart shoppers by making a purchase decision that makes use of government incentives and saves them a lot of money. What's so wrong with that?

If you were buying a house, and one house had a 50% tax and the other had a 120% tax, wouldn't the tax you would have to pay figure into your decision about which house to buy?

While you do have a point in general, there are circumstances in some cases. This thread was a rant on the driving style of some right from the get go.

I dunno. This pattern seems to be overblown claims by one party followed by overblown claims by the other party to keep parity. In this, it was the rant about hybrid drivers, followed by the defense by hybrid fans. In others, its the claims about hybrids (or Toyotas, Axios, Jap cars, Indian cars, Indian bikes, take your pick), followed by counter claims. And on and on, sprinkled with a dash of misunderstandings.

But all in all, it seems to be the claims that set people off. Either way.

Really true peri!! its a matter of personal preference...and u dont have to "beat up" someone just because they bought a prius , axio or a allion..it seems a totally stupid and ignorant thing to do

Machang, isn't price point a major decision when choosing to buy a car? Might not be for everyone but for a lot of people it is. Hence, one reason for the popularity of Prius IMHO. It applies to a lot of other things as well. Garages, cushion work places, ICE joints etc... People go to different places 'cos it's cheaper than the other and they think they're getting a service that's worth for the money they spent.

But all in all, it seems to be the claims that set people off. Either way.

to add to the list, there were questions asked in the forum about hybrids whether they're of any good in Sri Lankan context and the response from majority of petrolheads were it's a risk to buy used hybrids which may be an unknown devil in this terrain and in local context. Despite all these warnings some people decided on hybrids by only considering the less initial investment (say less than 3.0 mil when it started) and fuel figures.

Not even week later, a hybrid owner pops up asking for help for maintenance, I mean how can forum members help when the whole hybrid thing is completely new to local context and there's hardly a local garage takes care of hybrid repairs except the agent, and that post would've got replies with the meaning, I TOLD YOU SO.

Further, so called hybrid promotors were up for no good in helping about maintenance coz they themselves don't know anything other than just blindly promoting hybrids. I pretty much doubt the car sales guys with hundreds of hybrids stacked up in their premises are up to this.
