Good time to start a psychiatric practice in Sri Lanka...seems like the predictions (based on Toyota's hints and confirmed by some dealers)...the Allion/Premio as we know it seems to be getting cut off (still the old model is on sale in Japan); ill be merged in to one car and will be a variant of the Corolla. Based on some images from a Chinese motorshow that does seem to be happening....albeit the Corolla is the export model LWB Corolla as opposed to the Japanese variant with the slightly shorter wheelbase.

In Japan, the merged car was to be badged the Premio and have nicer features than the Corolla but it seems lie in the export markets it will be badged as the Allion.

Toyota has also hinted that the merged model will have a larger engine capacity...2L (and possibly 1.8L); as it seems to be the case according to these pics. But why a 1.8L when the Corolla is 1.8L ? Well...Toyota apparently feels the need to have a 1.5L sedan in Japan as currently there are no sedans in this segment by anyone. (after the Grace was pulled out of the local market)..so...if the Corolla sedan gets a 1.5L power train the current 1.8L Corolla will be sold as the Premio 🙂

On the other hand...a Corolla being badged as Allion does not necessarily mean anything either because Toyota has stuck all kind of badges on the thing for the Chinese market.

IMO..Corolla looks nicer...

Corolla Interior. Camry and corolla mixed rear end. SAI looking front end.

Expect the current model to go up like crazy. Also if it’s 1.8L, our buggers be like “ayyo no market” “Allion eka fail”

And the Corolla will be sold as Premio? Our buyya fellows will have a heart attack!

Well....yes...the Premio ill be a variant of the Corolla. Seems like it will be the export model Corolla sedan which has a slightly larger wheelbase than the Japanese market Corolla Sedan.

What you see above as the Allion is a Corolla...everything from the rear lightls to the front lights...only difference is the detail on the grill. The Premio will also be something like that.

Right now what Toyota has hintedwas that the Premio will be a 2L variant of the Corolla (which is available in export markets but not in Japan). The Premio MIGHT have a 1.8L variant IF Toyota deides to stick a 1.5L in the Corolla variant to fill up a market gap. For now...the Premio, if it does see the light of day..will be 2L. Which means it ill not come to SL...and you know what that would do to a lot of people.

Rejoice Rejoice Rejoice !

Toyota announced that the Premio, Allion and Prius Alpha will be discontinued from March, 2021 !

They have not mentioned anything about a replacement too...either in the 5 number category or a merged Premio which was a Corolla variant which they did talk about earlier..so would be interesting see what they come up with as well. As for the Prius Alpha....no surprise there as well as they pretty much phased out selling it since the new Prius was released.

プレミオ・アリオン・プリウスαについて21年3月末をもって生産終了いたします。

So the Allion and Premio's will go up in price or loose market??🤔 And a better market value for the Corolla. (in Arshikland / Banana Republic)

Guess they had the same underpinnings as the Corolla just like the Corona / Carina of late, just an upscale model.

The Allion and Premio shared the platform with the export model Corolla (and the 140 series Corolla Axio); since the Axio in Corolla was a narrow body sedan (exception would have been the 140 Corolla Axio). Since the new Corolla went up in size (in Japan...3 number category); Toyota does not see a need for another sedan to be designed...so the intent is if a combined Allion/Premio model is to be introduced it will be based on the new Corolla.

So..yeah...my post about the discontinuation in the Premio/Allion group has been deleted ! TWICE !! and now my posts are moderated. YES !

So Japan is following the EU and the Chinese in going fully ICE free.

https://www.autonews.com/regulation-safety/japan-may-ban-sales-new-ice-vehicles-mid-2030s-report-says

Anyone into manga should be reminded that MF Ghost the successor to initial D takes place in a Japan that has self driving cars and very few ICE cars. Maybe the mangaka knew about this move.

Yes...they have been talking about this for a few years...at first the proposal was 2025 but later extended to 2030 because it was not possible for manufacturers to meet the deadline with the R&D that were being done at the time. This is also surrounded by the fact that Japan is actively promoting Hydrogen based vehicles (ironically there are only 2 in the market and hydrogen station expansion ahs been slower than expected).

The hitch is the whole notion of zero NET carbon emissions in a Japanese sense (in language terms)....the last time the government enforced something like that with similar wording was with a carbon quota system for car manufacturers in Japan....which pretty much translated to a manufacturer can sell a car that does 1 km per 100L as long as it has enough eco friendly cars in its portfolio that counter balances it (thus the reason why Subaru is having issues launching the new BRZ in Japan whilst Toyota can go ahead and launch the 86 with absolutely no issues). Note that it says EVs and Hybrid electric vehicles...Hybrid of what ? Because contemporary conventional Hybrids are not zero carbon emission vehicles.

For a developed country Japan is one of the largest plastic and paper polluters...so this is quite a concern for everyone.

I saw UK also bring it down to 2030.

My concern is, what would happen to ICE cars that are running? What would happen to the market?

why would people pay 15mil plus for an ice car when they know its planned to be killed soon?

Some bugger offered me a new c200 for 17mil (he had it advertised for 12mil before the ban). The sad thing is he gets offers for 16mil by people who knows it’s overpriced.

One guy was like “england wala petrol karr enne nalu ne issrahata”,but still he’s buying a car for 16mil knowingly.

I really want a E350(“pull pinance dammaki mahattaya”) , but I can’t really get over the fact that it’ll be worthless without petrol.

I doubt you'll be driving the same car in 10 years, and especially so, if its an E350! :D

Despite the proposals I don't see ICE cars going anywhere in the next 10-15 yrs. We will see alot of changes in what they look like, but I don't see ICE engines going away altogether, as in remote parts of the world (Africa, Asia, South America...) and even in under served parts of developed nations you will still need ICE cars. They would probably have smaller engines supplemented with a plug-in or a self recharging hybrid system like we are starting to see on some of the bigger SUV's etc though.

What we will see happening in the next 10 years for certain is that: Having a car with a V8 or V12 in it will be rare. They will become much more expensive as regulations tighten due to things like gas-guzzler tax, pollution tax etc. Smaller ICE engines with a hybrid system, or fully zero-emissions cars will make more sense then, but ICE cars will always have a some demand (based on battery technology as it now stands) albeit with smaller, more efficient engines.

The good news is that on the other end, performance based electric cars like the Tesla 3 Performance DM AWD will get cheaper and more affordable and will probably out run the V8/V12 sports cars of this decade.

So we'll be driving cheaper, less polluting but faster cars in the next 5-10 years: I am looking forward to it ! :D

Well...ICE cars will be still there well after the 2030 change over....atleast for a good 15 years or so or even more. Governments have accepted the fact that not everyone will be able to afford to buy a new car..so they do account for a long phase out period. The idea is to ensure that a large majority of the vehicles being used for commuting be taken out leaving the old gasoline vehicles a minority. The only thing is it also means that it will be more expensive to use a ICE vehicle. In Japan what typically has happened is that the tax has marginally increased (so you might not necessarily feel it); however large discounts on taxes have been given for eco friendly vehicles (which in turn makes you feel the tax increase for ICE vehicles). The Auto groups are also lobbying for preservation of old ICE vehicles for historical aspects and are looking at special registration statuses where the taxes are lowered but can be used only for a certain limit of kms per year (like in Aus)..

Toyota's ZEV (Zero Emissions Vehicle) Factory has been in operation since 2018ish or so and at the time they shared some product development plans not only for just Toyota/Lexus but their partnerships with some of their working partners...

Yesterday we finally got to see some of the factory's results as Toyota showcased hints of an all electric crossover (the size of a RAV4 ?) and plans for more BEVs for the European market (European market is going to be a starting point i believe and then scaled out to other regions ?)..see video links at the end

Right off the heels of Toyota's announcement, Lexus revealed its DIRECT 4 concept (pretty much electric motor driven AWD system for Hybrids...similar to E-Four but more advanced). For the demo they showed a crossover with the system right alongside a Lexus ES. Lexus has not confirmed what this crossover is but it is believed to be the new Lexus RX (RX500e or something) as it does not match anything they have in their lineup.

Looks like Toyota & Lexus is ready for the EV future, Nissan and Mitsubishi also should be ok to go ahead. What about the rest of the Japanese manufacturers?

Nissan's e-4ORCE seems to be a good system in terms of performance.

Well..who else is there in terms of manufacturers ?

Only Subaru and Mazda are left out...they could always go back to using Toyota power trains and by the way things are right now that mostly likely will be the case. Suzuki is in with Toyota for EVs...Daihatsu is Toyota...

Mitsubishi and Nissan are already doing their electric thing...

Mitsuoka pretty much buys other manufacturers' cars and sticks bodies on them...so they are all good :)

The commercial vehicle manufacturers are doing a lot of FC and EV development so that is covered too...although the zero EV regulations for commercial vehicles seem to be a bit further away than for private/public passenger vehicles.

Well Mazda for one, they have been investing in new engine technology, then you have the likes of Honda (still hybrid and the electric city car some claim that they do not emit less CO2 in terms of the NSX) still not in the major league. Suzuki is onboard with Daihatsu as per your previous reply, question is can Toyota supply Suzuki for the Electric motors when Suzuki is not part of their business but a partner for certain markets and they themselves will have to go full electric and supply massive number of vehicles. So Suzuki will need more time to get into the Electric band wagon unless they sign a full agreement or go in for a JV.

Just my two cents.

Also there was a Sinhalese article shared on FB on Japan banning use of ICE vehicles completely by 2035 (maybe they misinterpreted the news on the web, which is typical of our journalists) which includes selling of second hand.

But for sure there will be production of ICE vehicles for developing countries who cannot afford the EV infrastructure (I will include Sri Lanka in this list as well).

Well...the thing is all the major manufacturers from Japan are working on electrification on their own or...not much surprise here...in partnership with Toyota. Toyota owns 5% of Suzuki or something (anyway..the deal was something like 98billion yen but Toyota paid only half of that and the remaining half was given to Suzuki in Toyota shares which amounted to like 0.2%). I believe the partnerships are a way to get Toyota's grip hold stronger within Suzuki...in fact Daihatsu has been having serious issues with Toyota and rumor has it that there are some pending court cases as well.

As for Mazda..the issue is that the JDM market is leading towards zero emission vehicles...which Mazda has nothing even remotely close to....the Hybrids so far have been borrowed from Toyota and Suzuki (for their kei cars); and Suzuki in turn gets a lot of the Hybrid tech from Toyota in their upcoming models.

As for the article...wasn't it you who posted the english article in this thread a few topics up ? But no...it is not the ban of USE of ICE vehicles...it is the ban of SALES of NEW ICE vehicles...what was stated was that by 2030 all new cars sold must be HybridEV and BEV vehicles. The government is supposed to layout a phase out plan by the end of this year. The statement said mid 2030s and in Japanese that could be misinterpreted as somewhere in the middle of 2030 or somewhere in the middle of the 2030 decade :) My wife reading the Japanese paper said what shall we do with our cars in 2030...so I suppose it is 2030 since the Japanese say its 2030.

Now..there is a loop in the terminology... HybridEV does not necessarily mean no ICE...it could be that the ICE is mated with motor driven tech. This is all part of Japan's drive to have a zero emissions (NET) goal by 2050...there were some statements made about all types of gasoline vehicles also being phased out leaving only FCV and BEVs).

Again..it is not a ban of ICE vehicle usage...so whatever vehicles that were sold prior to 2030 will still go one being used until they die a rusty old death and get replaced by HEV/BEV/FCV vehicles. Just that it seems like the taxes for ICE vehicles will stick to the current path of year-on-year marginal increases whilst huge incentives for HEV/BEV/FCV vehicles will be given out in order to entice people to switch. I think I mentioned this earlier, the Automobile council also recognizes that the automobile is a cultural part of Japan and are lobbying to establish policies for users to still maintain old ICE cars (as a matter of heritage...with restricted use).

So yes you are right about ICE for non developing country markets...the days of importing used cars from Japan to Sri Lanka are numbered unless Sri Lanka invests heavily on charging stations/infrastructure, FCV, etc...

So this means that we will see a lot more of Hybrid Electrics and e-Power technological cars coming out. Countries like the UK has already started electrifying the old cars, I was watching Johnny Smith's YT channel and they talked about electrifying old Porsches using Tesla tech. They already have kits for them, and they are in the process of making a kit for the Mazda MX5 and Johnny's own Figaro.

So it seems that they will look to preserve the oldies with EV drives and keep them on the roads.

The tuning community is / was big in Japan and they will also have to adapt to making the standard EV's faster.

Investing in EV charging will take some time in Sri Lanka, authorities will have to implement rules on charger cable types etc before someone invests into those areas. I know for a fact that we have 3 kinds of chargers - Japanese 110V, 220-240V Type 1 & Type 2 charger.

There are a few cottage garages that seem to be working on electrifying old cars but that has not been getting much publicity or even much attention. The thing is if a country wants to go all electric by 2030-2035...then ICE car sales should have been phased out now itself (in Japan the government recognizes a car to be used for 13 years on average..that is how the taxes and the shaken inspections, etc.. have been setup)..so if all ICE cars are to ply the roads of Japan in 2035 then logically you would expect the government to ask ICE cars to stop sales by 2022 or so . Even in the UK..the mandate I believe is to ban sales of ICE vehicles by 2035...not necessarily to ban the use of pre-existing vehicles. If that is the case, I am guessing the idea is to have these ICE cars fade out and when it gets replaced they get replaced by an EV vehicle. Granted I do believe that in most of these countries, there will be areas where ICE cars will not be allowed to enter, and even if it is possible there will be carbon taxes charged per entry or limited to particular time slots. Didn't UK also pass some law about every house with a parking spot needing to have a EV charging outlet ?

On the other hand...all around the globe...I am sure if the government gives really really good subsidies and financing options everyone except for the enthusiast or two will happily get rid of their ICE and go for a new EV...but then I don't think the few enthusiasts with their ICE cars would be the problem anyway (we will have to pay dearly for having them  through)

Again...this is all speculation...would be interesting to see what Japan actually comes up with.

The new Mirai was launched for sale yesterday...

Prices start from 7mil yen for the base G grade up to 8mil for he highest spec Z Executive Package.

The car is based on the TNGA GA-L platform which is used by the Lexus LS (and LC), thus makes it slightly larger than the Crown. This coupe sedan could also be the reason why Toyota would want the Crown to be a luxury cross-over kind of thing because the Mirai is getting pitched as a luxurious Exec saloon (which is what the Crown was all this time).

Toyota claims a cruising range of 850km per tank of Hydrogen so that is pretty decent...an increase of about 20% over the previous model ?

Needless to say it comes with all the TSS gadgetry with some updated features like advanced parking, autonomous driving assist systems similar to Nissan's ProPilot, Smartphone access to the car, etc.. The emergency power supply of these things seem to be are far more greater than what was possible with the Hybrid vehicles (no surprise as if I can remember my OL Chemistry, Hydrogen fusion disperses a large amount of electricity doesn't it ? or something like that)

What caught my eye was the "Negative (or Minus) Emissions rating. Why minus ? Because as the car intakes air for its "combustion"..well "reaction" the two stage air purification system apparently cleans the "output" air to level higher than the air that entered the car. The first stage...which is a filter based system apparently removed P2.5 particles, etc...and the second stage, a chemical filtration apparently cleans up other chemical pollutants in the air.

The government is giving pretty decent subsidies as well....Road/Vehicle weight tax is zero for the first two years (for a car of this size we are looking at about 100,000yen per year just knocked off...my Corolla wagon gets charged 54,000yen). Then environmental impact/performance tax at the time of registration is discounted 3% (so about 50,000yen there); special greening exception discount which gives an additional 75% discount on purchase taxes (considering the sales tax would be atleast 700,000 yen..that is a HUGE knock off) and then there is an additional 100,000-200,000 allowance given under a special CEV subsidy program to get people stepped in to Clean Energy Vehicles.

They will stop producing and selling ICE cars. When demand drop for petrol prices will either stabilize or come down.

Taxation might come in to curtail use of ICE cars.

ICE will remain for many more years until the current vehicles on the road go out of service.

I don't see this happening in SL during my life time or at least fix enough to get behind the wheel to enjoy a drive.

Yeah...fail to see this happening in most developing countries during..well ..my life time (no idea how old you are :D )...however, how we source cars in the developing world will drastically change. Right now we have a huge inflow of used vehicles from Japan followed by markets like the UK, Australia. That will probably change by 2030-2035 as these countries ban the sale of ICE cars...so we ill have to resort to export model variants..which our local guys have been dissing for years.

So..there were more presentations on Lexus' electrification and upcoming models...including this one which was ihntd to be the first we will see pretty soon. Exact dates and name of the model was not revealed but many believe it will be early next year and this could potentally be the RZ450e which was trademarked in some markets a few months ago...it seems to be a crossover...(sorry for the low quality images..they were screen grabs of a youtube stream)
