Project Capri

Hoonigan

Question

Hi all,

So I've been trying to find a Capri for some time now but haven't really been very successful.

I'm trying to do a resto-mod and I have a few very specific things I want to do to it. So an abandoned car that needs body work, paint, interior work etc fits the bill perfectly. I don't really care if it's running or not either.

The few I found were recently restored or 'modified' and asking prices were a bit on the high side and I would anyway have to roll back some of the work already done on them and this would make me overshoot my budget by a mile.

Basically, I'm looking for a Ford Capri (preferably MK1) in shabby condition for around 3-500K (not set in stone, maybe a bit more depending on the condition) If any of you gents know about one close to what I've mentioned above, please be kind enough to drop me a PM. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

Dude... 850,000? Seriously? Either you're fully loaded and money'd not a problem or you were taken for a ride.

Dude you know I wasn't the kid with the silver spoon in my mouth.

Like I said, The recent popularity of Capris hugely inflated the prices. People were having trouble pushing Capris for 200K not too long ago. Matter of fact, my fiance's father scrapped one a while back after scavenging parts for his Capri.

However, by the time I built up enough funds to actually buy one, the prices were already high. Believe me I tried. Even recently, Capri's in much much worse shape are asking for even more money. And less and less are reaching the market.

After weighing everything out, this one looked like the most viable option.

makes me think that taking a couple of weeks off work and going touring around rural areas in sri lanka might yield a whole bunch of cars that can be flipped for a few folds their price in Colombo.

Though as a buyer you probably should have acted cool and uninterested a bit more.. the seller probably smelled your desperation too

PS:

From making cardboard cars to real cars, you've come a long way ;)

Actually, next time you can get some leave, why dont we make a roadtrip of it? Im sure several others would tag along as well...

It's a potential Wheeler Dealer Sri Lanka series (or at least a segment for MoTorque) ;)

ahem! am in. already know of a 4 door 510 rotting away in bandarawela, a pontiac hidden in batticaloa and a caddilac in ratnapura, AND a recently restored datsun 240Z in awissawella. its mint!

Not a bad idea! Definitely will be better than watching what's-that-show on Sirasa TV :) But try parting Watchman from his DRZ. FB tells me you're enjoying it way too much :D

About the Capri-hunt, I did realise I was paying premium at the time of purchase as well. Did the whole "oya gaanata nam kauruth ganne nae" routine but the old gent drove a hard bargain. At least I got myself an arrow-straight body.

And I still build cardboard cars machan :) Have a caged up rally spec STI sitting in a cupboard at home. Can't believe that red Viper was like 14 years ago :o

Not quite "D" - in the recent past old Ford prices have soared, aided by sales of various Capri's & Escorts at prices above the 2 million mark :o

In light of that, as well as the sudden demand for these, that 850k price tag, despite agreeably not being the best 'value', isn't too bad - so i for one won't fault Hoonigan..

It's just the way thing are here these days :(

The proposition of a classic car hunt is quite interesting :)

Talking of Capris that went beyond the 2mil mark, let's just say there are some exaggerations from the buyer and seller regarding the actual sale price...One must remember there are certain parties benifiting from overinflating car prices.

Anyway on the whole classic Fords do seem to be a good investment these days.

Cheers @Davinda! Yes, "value" wise it's not worth the money. And I knew it going in.

Had locked up brakes and an engine that won't run. All of which was relatively easy to fix. It was driven to the garage actually.

@MD - Absolutely...looking at certain comments that get thrown around in the Facebook groups indicate a rather 'ugly' side of some collectors. So many 'political' moves. I won't be surprised if prices are exaggerated when they reach the interwebs.

BTW I meant to post it earlier but forgot. There is a bumper-less orange-ish Mk1 Capri regularly at the Nawam Mw car park with a for sale board on it. There seems to be a thick layer of make up covering ugly skin underneath from what I can see. But it has to be a reliable runner as I see it often. If any Ford fan is interested I can make some inquiries. Let me know.

@ABR, More importantly, pics or didn't happen! :sport-smiley-004:

Going back there next weekend, will get some pics. Stay tuned

edit

Since we are on the topic of Capris and old and classic Fords, what do you guys think about this 1974 Cortina glx ? (its from another car sale website so i cant link it here, here is a pic)

zW84ah1.png

Called the owner, the guy has replaced the engine and its diesel converted. Is it worth it for the price of 4.5 laks? Its been on sale for 2 months now, people on classic car discussion groups are talking about this car aswell, seems as if the owner is a complete douchebag who has little respect for the vehicle (call him and hear the way he talks)

I hope it ends up in good hands..

Fortunately or unfortunately, some people are going to be very rich with the classic car scene in the future.

Reminds me of the stock-market mafia in the recent past.

Too much to do in that ford men! I'm sure you can find a cortina glx in better shape somewhere

Why is that people replace engines in cortinas ? >.< i saw another advert on the same website of a cortina, it had a mazda EFI 2000cc engine.

If you look at old Fords, Cortinas are the most that pop up, followed by Escorts and then Capris. So if you're interested in a Cortina, you probably can find one in better shape than this. Although Diesel conversions seem to be quite popular with Cortinas :/

But on the other side of the spectrum, there was a Cortina in a garage in Kiribathgoda with a 2JZ in it. Last I heard he was having trouble starting it up though.

And then wonde whether a certain amount of bird droppings/tube choices affect the consumption. We live in a county where people will pay a 70,000 rupee lease on a hybrid just to save 20-30,000 annually on petrol instead of buying an older jap car they actually can afford!

Any classic/collectible car WILL only appreciate in value as long as import restrictions are in place. There simply is too much demand with only a trickle of supply. But some people will get greedy and want to inflate prices and profit no doubt. But as always "Caveat emptor" (Let the buyer beware). It was the same story in the stock market. As long as there are suckers out there the fraudulent minded will attempt to cheat. And they are still doing it with the blessings of the regulators (unlike the Classic car scene which does not have one). Contrary to Gordon Gekko's BS - Greed is not good.

Speaking of Pontiacs.....I went ahead and bought me some alloys. According to the seller they came off a Trans Am.

They were advertised on Grease Monkey Tuning and I liked their look. They are 16"s so they are a bit larger than my first draft but I thought I will go low profile to compensate the extra height.

they also are five stud so either adapters or entire hub modifications are in order. But that will have to wait till the diff is fitted.DSCN4179.jpg
