Punani is on the road to batticaloa, a little past Welikanda. It's a small town. Became infamous in the early 1900's when the villagers were stalked by a leopard. Claimed many lives before the British governor of the east launched a hunting party and shot the animal down. He wrote a book about it called "the man eater of Punani" I know of one copy that exists with a friend. Maybe our local historian can shed some light on it. Sampath?

If only he knew how funny that title sounds now... Like a bad porn parody by vivid video!

I red that book when I was a child may be at age or 10 or 11. Untill now I thought it's something happened in India :)

By Christopher Ondaatje. Sorry not the governor. To was a story of how the governor shot the beast. My bad. Good read nevertheless. I'm looking for that photo I took of Punani police. And trinity I also have one with a friend holding a rock and pointing at the "paiyya" and the "gala" to illustrate his point, under the payagala railway station sign!!

This has gone way to now. Enough enough. Let our good man with his Hillman steal the show please!

They should have had Hillman Hunters back then ;) .

Anyway the books sounds an interesting read. Must try to get a copy.

There is an Indian book like that too...Man eating leopard of Rudraprayag by hunter/marksman James Corbett. The author has several books along the same lines, hunting leopards and bengal tigers.

That Brit-Indian hunter also authored a book titled 'Man Eaters of Kumaon' which I would like to get a copy of. He had hunted Tigers (man-eaters), leopards and other wildlife. I'm not fond of hunters or their sport, but it's a book I'd love to read.

EDIT: MD's got the name.
