Hi Friends,

You guys have the "Resonator"(similar to silencer barrel)in your vehicle's "exhaust system". I have heard the function of it is to reduce noise.

1. If it's week due to corrosion, should it be replaced with new one or is it OK to remove it completely?

2. Does this have relation to vehicle power/ performance?

3. Does this cause to increase or decrease fuel economy?

Hi Uditha

Are you talking about Catalytic converter or Exhaust muffler ?

a barrel very close to exhaust end or at the middle ?

assuming that you are talking about Exhaust muffler,

1.Don't remove it machan replace it.

2.there are some performance boost mufflers too available, but general it doesn't have big boost up unless it is not blocked.

3.it it blocked, yes you may have lot of problems

thanks

Hi Sumi,

Barrel at the middle. I also misunderstood that this is catalytic converter. But it's not. Another Barrel like muffler called "Resonator". But Catalytic converter is the one very near to exhaust manifold right? (O2 sensor lugs into there)

Hi Uditha ?

yes it is Catalytic converter,

1. you can remove it completely, but if your vehicle come with it, better you have one

2. this is not Performance booster actually a Emission controller

3. sometimes may be i am not sure about ,but that is negligible

:)

thanks

ok here is the thing.. in anormal econo setup.. there is the catalytic converter, the center resonator, and then the backbox or the muffler in this instance.

if ur car is a old one that means pre OBDII model u can experimnet a lot as the 02 sensor on these came on the manifold and not on the catalytic converter..

u can get the catalytic converter cleaned i hear.. but if its worn off badly u need to replace it..

the center resontaor is something that muffles the sound before it gets to ur backbox.. in my previos car i took off both the catalytic converter and center resonater but ran a HKS backbox. the sound increses when u take off the resonator.

but depending on ur model and how the ECU reacts doing this might harm ur car.. so u need to know about ur car and stuff..

mine was a 89 model so i did a lot of things with it..

1.it should either be repaired or replaced but not removed. resonator box is there for a purpose. It's the first thing that control back pressure of the engine and is a part of a multi pron exhaust system. If you're modifying the exhaust for say more performance...the entire setup should be looked at and done up appropriately without just taking out one component

2.It does...that why it's there.

3.if you take it out...it will have an effect due to loss of back pressure...engine will run a bit hotter and leaner. Also a lot louder

loss of back pressure means less power at the lower end of the powerband. not very good for our kinda driving

Sorry Sumi,

It should not be catalytic converter. It should be "Resonator". U agree?

Check the answer of Charitha. (charitha19). I think he's correct.

Thanks all for ur answers.

3.loss of back pressure means less power.....

Thnx Ripper.

So the conclusion is, if particlar vehicle has both Muffler & Resonator Barrel, it's not enough to keep either Muffler Barell or Resonator Barrel in good condition, we have to keep both in good shape right?

[in order to keep car's good performance & good economy if any due to proper back pressure?]

Don't you have to keep everything in shape for a well balanced car? :P

Shall V plz restrict the context of the question only to the relationship between health of exhaust system & fuel economy.

Thanks. B)

Jawohl, mein Fuhrer. :)
