Heard a rumour (and thats what it is for now) that the Car Importers association (ie. Unreg Used cars importers) has signed a petition to submit to our Prez. The petition (apparently) is to put a stop to personal imports by individuals. Given the current advantage where private individuals can save quite a lot of money if they import a car themselves, it has become the more economical path to getting a used unregistered car. I wouldn't put it past the local Car Sales folks to try monopolize that market as they are probably losing 200-400k per car to personal imports. Anyone heard differently?

do you mean 1973? KE20's were from the 70's as far as i remember. Out of curiousity- did you find a sedan or coupe? My gramps had a mustard yellow coupe- 6Sri3848...it was such a trouper. In hindsight, i wish we kept it!! Would have made a perfect 4AGE project... Last i saw, it was in the Nugegoda area and was a green colour.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but a 4DR5 is diesel- and i don't think the requirements were/have been as stringent on diesels. But without discussing semantics, in the end its still good news in that most of us with old cars don't have to worry as much.
-
To be clear guys- i have a 9sri and because the "time of registration" was 1978, i had to get the green test done (although my car is a '73)... Up until now, you had to make a special appeal to get exempted from the test if your car was pre-75 but had a post-75 registration... This gazette, thankfully clears everything.
-
Good news Classic Nuts The govt has issued a gazette effective February 1, 2011 stipulating that and car with a YOM of 12.31.75 or older will NOT be required to do an emissions test, REGARDLESS of Registration number. I just renewed the revenue on my 9Sri without issues, so consider that the litmus test. I've got a scanned pdf of the gazette (see my next post for image). Good luck!

Surprising to see no replies on this... On car choice- the thing about any classic (and restorations)- you have to find the car that you can put your heart to. A classic is very the object that has an emotional connection to you...i for one, love mercs and vw's. In terms of parts availability- the rule of thumb is the rarer the car, the harder to find parts. VW's, austins, Mercs are probably have easier local access to parts. Sand/bead blasting- to date, i'm not sure if anyone does it locally- but i saw pics of a vw floorpan restored by the Carmart Vintage restoration outfit- it was an immaculate finish, which makes me wonder if they had sandblasted it. good luck!

Best to do the crystalline tint on the windshield and front windows, and darker tint on the rears- cops are only particular about seeing who's in the front seats, oddly enough. There is a definite difference between 3M and the cheaper stuff, mainly the heat rejection. If its looks you're going for, get the cheap stuff, but if its to preserve your interior and AC cooling, go with 3M.

It has just come to light that Alonso's vigorous fist shaking at Petrov was not a "WTF, I want to be World Champion, so you should have given me your position", but they were actually playing rock, paper, scissors.
-
Clearly you're the leading authority on all things WRX and STI. I stand corrected.
-
If you don't mind the dubious history, i'd say get it checked by car mart, and see it for about 2 (even less if possible). Might be worth a good restoration project.
-
I believe that car has been through the ringer...if that doesn't matter, see if you can get it for less.

Saw the CTS y'day afternoon- pulled over by the cops near Royal college...looked like it was RHD.

've said converted cars *CAN* get into a twist, not will (hence the asterisks) Welcome to the forum! Again, no argument to those cars built for a purpose- with a experienced driver at the wheel! In the 90's/ early 2000, US Teams used the regular chassis because Subaru did not officially sell the STI/WRX in the US market- until years later. Same goes for the local example. In the right hands, sky's the limit. And just for the record buddy, I owned a STI, however not a conversion
-
Disagree on converts being as good as the genuine car. No matter how much money is put into a conversion, one fact will remain. The 1500cc chassis is NOT reinforced the way the WRX or STi Cars are- and this is done at the factory- there are additional framework at the suspension turrets, and centre tunnel where the engine-transmission is mounted. That's why they have different chassis notations...because they follow a different line down the assembly plant. For normal everyday driving, a conversion will be more than adequate....but as it has been said, the limitation *can* appear when the car is being driven on edge. However, unlike the Lancer to Evo conversion, imprezas are far easier to convert because they are already made to accept the AWD drivetrain, which is available in the smaller engine sizes.

Yep- same time. Silver with Black(?) centre stripes and black alloys. Came out of barnes place, blasted thru the horton place lights (red lights) with defenders in tow and then hammered down green path.
-
Yes, makes sense- if the model type cars are what are reported. I know that some of the car 'specs/options' dial very much into the value of the car, regardless of YOM- would be interesting to know if this played a part... As you've said, its all business and one trying the undercut the other...so lets see what comes of it.

The W202 was assembled in South Africa though...there's one in SL. Not sure if there's a distinct number that separates those made in germany (apart actually checking the stamped panel). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_C-Class As mentioned before, the subsequent E-Class (W124 onwards), in its later years was assembled in India... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_E-Class

Something smells here. Granted, there should be benefit of the doubt when it comes to the small business going against the larger established player. But from what i gather, the dismayed "parallel" distributor is the equivalent of what we call a 'grey' imports dealer? (Correct me if i'm wrong). If this is the case, its logical that the cars will be used cars, primarily. Either it was a case of crappy reporting, or just not (wanting to) get into the details. The model of the car is not consistent...The E250CDi is a 2.1L diesel engine whereas the E250CGi is a 1.8L petrol engine. ...very different tax brackets! Also, we're in the year of 2010, so logically the 2nd E250 car with YOM 2009 is an older model? I may be biased as I always think its better to get a car from the approved agents especially when you pay so much money for a car...

Nice. She's a trooper for tolerating the ride quality- Romani's car was like a go kart...i can't imagine that being a daily driver!
-
Darin- back to the original thread...is the white car at the showroom (now your sis') an RA-R? Looks like a few of the earlier posts were disputing the model type...when i drove by, i thought i saw the right clues: Spoiler, Wheels, etc...
-
Not sure if it was the same car...but i saw a red one a few months back. I think it had a older number plate...
-
Its well on its way to getting back on the road after a long resto....should be an eye-catcher!

they must have thought the micron (which was beaten by the ugly stick) was bad enough. The actyon's been beaten by the fugly stick - no mercy for sure. But, if you like it go for it...it is your preference and money in the end! On reliability- early Ssyanyong-Micro cars used to give trouble about 1-2 years down the road if i remember right...although i haven't heard that story lately.
