  1. An asterix reference??? That's old school
  2. I'm thinking about getting hold of a permit via a known chap and placing an order for a vehicle via the agents (Prest1ge or D1mo). Is there a risk involved with any potential Duty Hikes before the vehicle is cleared in Sri Lanka? Ex: The going rate for a 2013 520D U/R is around 10.3 ish now. However, If I place the order via the agents I can get the face-lifted '14 version (hinted by the agents) delivered in around 3~4 months for around 1 mil cheaper. However, Certain people have been telling me its safer to purchase ex stock vehicles as there is a risk of import duty/procedure changes Even after opening an LC with the agent. Is this a legitimate risk? To be honest I'm not even sure what it means to "buy a permit" from someone - do they change ownership of this "permit" even before we open the LC for the new vehicle??? This is the first time I'm considering using a permit or placing an order directly with an agent as I have always bought Registered vehicles from local dealers up to now. So Any and all input will be MUCH appreciated thanks in advance.
  3. LG / Samsung for 150k - 190k. Sony for over 200k (probably much more now). Hey guys just be careful when buying a new High Definition TV as it should support HDCP. If not, you might not be able to watch High def discs from your new PS3 or any other high def dvd player in full resolution. HDCP is a new digital content management protocol. Hence, If HDCP is not implemented by the TV, you will not be able to see high def stuff @ their full resolution - instead, they will display the image in lower quality standard definition thus defeating the entire purpose of having a hi-def tv and hi-def player. follow this link for more information. Hope nonaya'll dropped mad dough for a hidef tv prior to 06.... http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,122738-page,1/article.html
  4. There is a cheaper alternative which people in the north American continent might be familiar with. DLP rear projection technology. Some of those DLP (texas instruments licensed technology) tv's have CRAAAZY SICK displays some even on par with Sony Bravia's (comparing to the 42 inch X series - my dad bought it for my big bro in Sydney as a present - hope he drops it and breaks it he he lol - ok im a lil jealous). Anyways, these DLP's in the US were going for as low as 2000$ compared to bravia's going for around 4000$. The pic quality was sooo good compared to other rear projection technologies. however, it had a problem with the bulb burning out in the early models. Some good ones were from samsung. Sadly, our idiots in Sri Lanka are not bringing them down dunno why. i'm sure it'll be a cheaper alternative to LCD's and people might actually see the value and buy them over lcd's and plasmas. You guys really need to see a DLP to truly appreciate the value for money. A dealer in SL is trying to sell me a 1080i 42inch plasma with DVR (video recorder implemented using a built in 80 gig HDD) for 350k which is 150k every where else in the world. Its a crime - i dunno whether Electronics truly have 100% tax or whether our dealers are monopolizing the market as not too many small importers can afford to bring in products that less than 1% of the population is interested in. Bottom line, you can get a decent "high-def" (not really 1080p stuff but it will have to do until we get better stuff) LCD (32 inch) for 150k and a nice-enough 42inch plasma for 300k. I'm currently inquiring about bringing down the new 42inch Sony Bravia X series. If i succeed, i'll post with some nice pics Too bad i cant connect a PS3 into my 30inch Dell LCD (there are no HDMI to dual-link DVI converters in existence yet; there are HDMI to Single-Link DVIs but the damn monitor's resolution which is 2560x1600 requires dual-link). If not i would've used that and been soo happy
  5. maaan i'd Lurrrve to have one of dem babies.... provided its a post 2001 at least.... though there must be something wrong with it as almost every 5 i've come across is being advertised at over 5.5 mil mostly over 6 mil....
  6. my sentiments exactly
  7. http://www.thetorquereport.com/2007/05/new..._nissan_gt.html didn't know that the highest end version would cost more than an S 550 lol i'm sure somebody will bring it down if possible
  8. oh kewl... but the system itself isn't available in sri lanka right? i wonder whether its available in india... (uk is too far lol)
  9. hey guys, are there any xbox360 or ps3 owners in sri lanka? If so where did u purchase the systems from and where are you getting your games?
  10. as recommended by the admins, I'll post it in AL classified section tomorrow morning after i take some "pretty" pictures .
  11. umm... whats the point? http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Gener...rticleId=108559 i wonder whether the technology would be revolutionary.... something like "Kit... take me home"
  12. hey guys, just curious and wondering whether there are any E38's (post 98) in the market? What do you suppose the asking prices for these babies would be? I think i saw one or two of them with "302-" number plates. Probably belonged to some ministers or bigshots as all the windows were heavily tinted.
  13. i just got an offer from a certain agent where i was hoping to exchange my peugot 206 (2004 year, petrol, manual, 30k km mileage) for a 318i for a lil over 1.2 mil... i almost feel offended by the guy's offer - the only problem is, i've no idea whether this is what im to expect for the car? It's in brilliant condition and ive noticed that its difficult to even get a bullock cart for that price (maybe the non turbo version ). But seriously... 206s cant have such a crappy resale value right? its only 3 years old :(
  14. Hey thanks man, that was very informative... i think even im a lil more partial to the 3 now that ive done a lil more research. The jag came into the pic coz my mom saw a gorgeous electric blue one @ the showroom near peliyagoda and fell in love with it. Anyways, seems like owning a jag is a nightmare in sri lanka too. One more important question, did the 318i's come in Auto (don't flame - car needs to be wife friendly too )? Also, didn't sri lanka get any higher models like 320i's or even 330i's (yummy)? I'm asking coz i havent really seen many and almost all the petrol 3's ive seen lately have been manual 318i's. Thanks again guys and I much appreciate your insightful post 'MadMMx'.
  15. umm wouldn't half of colombo be eligible for this then? Any sources or references pls?
  16. so i finally got the green light to get rid of my 2004 peugot 206 (any offers? lol) and im trying to decide between a 2002 BMW 318i (around 50k km) and a 2003 (or 2002 im not sure) Jag X-Type (same mileage). The 3 series is being quoted by the dealer @ 4.5 mil but i'm hoping he'll come down a lot more (is this a ripoff - pls advice) and the X-type is being quoted @ around 6 mil (I'm hoping for 5.5 mil). Any comments? I'm afraid of committing to anything for a few reasons: 1) i love the E46 but they are waay too common on SL roads 2) the jag looks awesome but im worried about resale value in SL / maintenance costs etc I would greatly appreciate any input... thanks
  17. Thanks man, i just went over that doc. Its only for crooked government workers eh? So no more BOI permits and concessions for good old exporters brining hard currency into the country ???
  18. hey guys, in regards to a thread which is discussing the "best diesel suv for a permit," i was curious as to find out what kind of permits are available in the market now? I'm specially interested in finding out whether BOI's are awarded any permits or is it only for government employees? If its the latter, what level in the bureaucracy must you be in to obtain a permit? Thanks....
  19. just came across this on a site, wonder whether this is really the direction jag wants to go with their middle tier vehicle... kinda looks like an Aston Martin ripoff though looks nice... too bad it'll cost over 15mil or something absurd like that here in SL when we get it next year http://blogs.edmunds.com/Straightline/2017
  20. It was the new body shape. I didn't see the actual model but i was assuming it was a 500. Could've even been a 600 or 55AMG, i just assumed its the lowest model coz i didn't think anybody in Sri Lanka could afford a 55MG or a 600 (same price right both of em?). But the car was absolutely gorgeous.
  21. I just saw an SL500 in Colombo... but i vaguely remember seeing another one 2 years back too. It's most probably old news though - gorgeous car
  22. Sooo interesting question, why does the sri lankan used car market care more about the date of local registration vs year of manufacture?
  23. Yeah i'm currently in sooo much pain; just got back from the US, cant seem to afford anything decent - have a bad feeling I'm gonna be stuck with my old Peugeot 206 *sigh* . However, i was really hoping that I'll be able to get a 318i for around 3 Mil since people some time back was quoting around 4 - 4.5 mil for a 320d @ a car dealer in Galle Road Bamba..... Anyways, does anyone here know any dealers with 318i's? Loads of 320d's though....
  24. some retard just quoted me 70 lhaks for a 2002 318i. This has got to be a crime on multiple levels right?????? He attributed it to the fact that it was unregistered and being brand new or something. The whole used car scene here very cryptic to me, i see people labeling 1999-2006 models brand new, what the hell does it mean? Surely besides them buying it new from the dealer, no one is going to keep a car in their garage without driving it for a few years right (Referring to the people who say a 2000(etc) model is brand new).
  25. hey guys, just curious has anybody seen one of the new ones in SL? Is it being sold anywhere else in the world yet? Wonder how much d$MO would ask for it eh?
