    Experienced my first electronic gremlin this morning; as you know, the facelift Axio Hybrid only comes with a black dashboard, i.e. heat absorpment par excellence, and you can feel the heat radiating onto your face. To mitigate this, I point the right most register to the extreme 10 o'clock position, a kind of air curtain if you will. Today I tried using the windscreen vents instead to see if that would have the same effect, and it didn't. When I tried returning the setting to the face level vents, they refused to work and air was flowing at my feet instead. When I changed to feet, the outer to registers blew air but the center one was closed, and the windscreen one was once again enabled. And thus, the climate control system went full retard. I even powered the car off and on while at a traffic light, but to no avail. After getting to office, I let it sit for a few hours and tried it again 10 minutes, and everything was normal. This leads me to believe I somehow stumbled upon a firmware bug, at least in the blend door controls, because temperature regulation was unaffected.

    The other main difference is that cars with the 'Hybrid' emblem can now crawl in traffic under electric power, due to a larger battery and revamped motor/generator. My wife has the older S-ene charge version, and it has a separate starter motor for initially starting the vehicle, but uses the ISG (integrated starter/generator) while on the move (there is an audible difference in how the engine is started in both modes). The engine shuts off when coasting to a stop (you have to be light on the brakes), and remains switched off while your foot is on the brake pedal. You can override the functionality with a button. The revamped system supposedly allows one to crawl in traffic on electric power alone, which will be a boon in traffic, because waiting for the engine to start just to move a few feet is frustrating as hell.

    So pretty much all the mechanical gremlins have been hammered out of the Shitbox now. All that remains is now is to figure out how to make the a/c cool better. At high ambient temperatures and traffic, the a/c is simply unable to deal with the load.

    That's a drain for your transmission. It's supposed to be there. What you found was most probably water mixed with oil. Check your transmission fluid level, if there's on drop then forget it.

    Did the WD40 thing, tried wooden block and hammer as well. Didn't attempt it again. My next option is to take it to my mechanic.

      Has known issues with the engine and gearbox. Unlike other Protons, the Savvy has a Renault-sourced powertrain. Renault is synonymous with trouble.

      If you want to grab something that looks good from the rear, suggest visiting a massage parlour.

    IAC, had this issue in the ShitBox. It would just die when I let off the throttle and push in the clutch as I was slowing down. Sometimes happened mid-turn, the steering goes heavy very suddenly, but usually started again by popping the clutch immediately. In my case, this behaviour only starts an hour or so after the car had properly warmed up, and time of day made no difference (some people attributed heat soak while stuck in traffic at mid day).

    Tried removing the cowl once to clean the leaves inside, bloody wiper arms wouldn't come off no matter how i tried and I was afraid of breaking something so I gave up. Any tips on how to get the arms off? It looks like they've bonded to the splines.

    So whenever it rains AND whenever I park at my parents' place, the climate control in the Shitbox goes out for a day or two. I figured it to be water ingress from the very beginning, but since the problem goes away, I never really bothered to check. This time the problem lasted for more than two days, so I decided to dive into it. The glove box comes out, as does the metal bar on which it is mounted. The climate control module is inside a plastic case, but is not sealed *at all*. I gave the module a thorough cleaning, and then lightly covered the thing in dielectric grease before replacing it back inside the case. I couldn't be arsed to figure out where exactly the water was coming in from, as it only ever happens when the car is parked on an upward facing angle, when it's raining *hard*, so I've chalked it up to some kind of design flaw (of which the Starlet as many).

    So here's some documentation of a bit of DIY I did some months ago. The driver's side window motor fried itself, along with the automatic mechanism and a hardwired fuse on the PCB. It didn't occur to me to properly document this at the time, because I was pressed for time, so the photos were taken mainly for my reference. Cleaning the power window contacts is something everyone should do on a 20 year or older vehicle. The amount of carbon build up on the contacts is insane. I ended up disabling the automatic mechanism because I believe the thermal cutout it uses to no longer be reliable. The post is short, so feel free to ask for specifics since there are many.

    The 2006 Vios has a regular automatic, not a CVT.

    Former Vios owner, ran one for 4 years. Mine never did over 10kms/l in Colombo, and 8-9 was common. I was happy when ever I got over 300kms from a full tank (at the time of the low fuel indicator coming on). The Vios is an excellent car, and I wouldn't go to tinker too much with the fuel efficiency by taking it to various garages and asking the maka baases to do their voodoo magic on it. Take it to Toyota Lanka, ask them for a tune up, and maybe an engine diagnosis, it could be that you need a sensor replacement somewhere. Do not use 95 octane, I have never seen any benefits, and my car actually did slightly worse on fuel on 95.

    Looking for front windscreen wiper recommendations, cost is really not an issue as long as they work well.

      I've gone for NWB Design Wiper Blades, bit costly.. but switched last year and still going strong. good thing is you can replace just the blade.

      I've used BOSCH frame-less wiper blades and they were pretty good. They're also re-fillable, so you don't have to throw away the nice frame-less body. D!MO is the agent of BOSCH I believe.

      I've also used RainX (also frame-less) wiper blades here in Australia, they're excellent, although I'm not sure how they will hold up against the Sri Lankan climate.

    it's still the shit box Broke a window rail mount 2 months ago, replacements arrived last week, going to have a blast of a time (not) removing the broken mount from the glass. I need to do some mild tuning mods for more mid range torque. Edit: Also found that mine is the X-Limited, which I think is the highest grade one get, apart from the Gi, which is the Turbo look without the turbo bits and available only with the 2 door versions.

    To answer both questions, the pictures are of a 1991 EP82 4 door. it's got all the bells and whistles, including automatic climate control, which I have only see on Starlet GTs prior to this. And thank you iRage, your knowledge of obscure JDM oddities is much valued!

    So since I moved, I've been hearing quite a few cars racing by my house, including the 718 Boxster that came down last year. Recently I've begun hearing a 5 cylinder engine, and I have no idea what it is. Maybe the green Focus RS?
