Ive seen 3c turbo engines taken off cr40/cr50s from 190k for just the engine and upto 350k for engine gearbox combos. As for places. I can't mention shop names but there are plenty in delkanda and also in some places along kandy road. When I bought my engine I looked for an engine without the "timing belt changed at..." sticker on the t belt casing (not the most effective way cos its not always stuck on the engine), original utility belts that are fitted in the factory (can't remember the brand name unfortunately) and an overall clean appearance with no oil stains or anything. But its still quite difficult to tell the condition even after you start it up. buy it from a trusted place and you should be pretty ok. I got the "motta" engine for 205k On a side note its not a straightforward a conversion as you might think. You'll need a 3c compatible gearbox if yours is an auto, or a bellhousing if its manual. Then you'll need new radiator (3c turbo radiators have 3 cores). new front subframe thats 3c/2c compatible if you don't wanna do a cut n shut job. a pre-heat kit for the ignition (wiring can be done locally), finally, the most difficult to find item, an original 3c turbo exhaust unit.

Not a bad choice if you want a relatively new car. but the 1nz has an offset crank that will cause the stock con rods to snap at boosts above 0.5 bar/150 bhp. so i'd go down the 4e-fte path. plenty of pre-2000 toyotas will receive the engine on stock mounts and because it already has a turbo you wouldnt have to spend another 200 to 400k fitting an aftermarket unit like in the 1nz (unless it comes from a very expensive trd turbo). also if you are lucky you'll get it bundled with an lsd gearbox and there's a lot more parts available for less and the engines more robust.

Seeing that there's a class for sub 1600cc hybrids, I can't help but wonder why there isn't a class for diesels. I mean look at all the E90 320d's roaming our streets today. On paper alone they are faster than almost half the classes in this event. Even without them a montero 3.2 d-id against a hilux 3.0 d4d would be a pretty interesting battle. Just my 2 cents

Top Gear/fifth Gear/jeremy Clarkson Videos!

you can watch every single top gear episode here http://watchseries.eu/serie/top_gear -
Honestly in my point of view this is the automotive equivalent of stuffing a sock down your trousers to make your genitals look bigger. But if thats your kind of thing use the firing kit of single cylinder engine, fit the spark plug near the tip of the exhaust, do the necessary wiring and grounding stuff remove cat and you are good to go.

crush bending is so called because bending pipes using this method involves the inside of the bend being pushed inwards during the process. this makes the pipes narrower at the bends creating backpressure that brings down the efficiency of an engine. Personally I too would go with wepr if i want a good aftermarket exhaust system. its one of the few organisations with mandrel benders and probably the only one of them that fabricates exhaust systems with them.
-
afaik elcardo still uses crush bending to fabricate exhaust units. so depending on the quality of your original exhaust system this won't make any difference other than curing the rattle and probably robbing some of the performance.

Thanks mate I think its time the AL guys had a day out. or rather a night out

utter BS! I seriously don't see any reason why we should agree with these claims. This is probably an american article therefore we must remember they have higher safety standards and in general, safer cars. so dangerous is just a relative term. Ford focus is one of the safest hatchbacks in the market right now. but why doesn't it work in the stateside? cos its dwarfed by those massive gas guzzling trucks. but what would fair better in a crash between one of them and another brand new car available in sl? like a Chinese cherry, or a maruti. what about the infamous tuk tuk? ok maybe cos they are in america it doesn't really matter to them. but what about the corvair, which was deemed "unsafe at any speed"? seriously, the topic of this thread should have been the most daft and ignorant report ever

Don't forget to perform some major cleaning on all the interior trim and the cushion. You could get seriously ill just sitting in that thing considering what the seats soaked up.

Top gear is no longer a factual program as it was until the late 90s. The reason most people most brits sit down in front of their tvs on sundays is because its more of an entertainment program. not something filled with boring facts like how an lsd works. this is why women of all ages like this program. cos its full of comedy, exaggerated facts and sarcasm based around cars and is presented by people who tend not to get too pedantic over mechanical subjects. The question is can we really pull off something like this in a sinhala program without having to make presenters make fools of themselves? If you think of extremely funny tv programs "api nodanna live" is probably the first program that'll come to our minds. can you imagine having those presenters in a car program and having to take them seriously when they are introducing us to the most important car of the year? so we'll need some top notch presenters who can cover all bases (mostly acting). I'd say the best choice will be to base the program around fifth gear. it doesnt miss out most of the facts though at the same time it doesn't make you rofl.

Guys! the first video was just an exercise. I saw this on youtube sometime back and one viewer said it was actually an exercise conducted by some german organisation for scientific purposes or something. that was a 20 year old truck with 250000 miles on it, taken off from the highway department or something, then loaded with a 2 tonne weight and crashed onto a solid wall doing 60mph. I'm sticking to that idea cos even a tuk tuk wont do that bad in a normal crash test.

any info on this car?
-
Thanks mate. Any more info on this car? pics? My priorities have changed slightly since the prices went down. lets talk about this car purely for information. corolla or sprinter? hatch or coupe? I'll watch some episodes soon as for the car the differences between an 85 and 86 are pretty unclear at the moment. So far I've only seen people discuss this on forums. Hope someone will find something more accurate soon. and if im going to do this so big why not start with an original hachiroku? it'll be a more fitting conversion

What's this new PR registration I'm seeing on extra cabs? Heard its some new dual purpose classification. Has anyone got more info? Also, how would the reduced taxes affect the price of smart cabs? namely the 3.0 version.

There's one born every minute. with all due respect, Its people like this who makes being on these forums worthwhile. especially when we are going through a slow phase of broken a/c's on fb14s or a series of transmission failures. If you don't agree with me just see how the views on this thread skyrockets in a short period of time

Well I suppose the parts unique to the AE86s are pretty hard to find, though not that expensive. The rest is just corolla bits which is why one should be confident about restoring a wreck. Are you suggesting most of these cars in sl were 85s and not 86s? On the Subject of 86s I saw some pics on a friends phone. It was a red and black example on 15- plates and I was told it had digital instruments. the badge at the back said sports gt or something. I'll upload the pics if i can get them off his phone. This is probably the car I see on baseline every now and then. It was captured at auto mir*j some time back and was driven by a middle aged block apparently.

The handling problems are due to chassis flex. So to match the rigidity of the ae86 the frame will need stiffening all around. However the coupe is more rigid than the more popular hatchback. and Shan, You are right. the suspension needs to be changed, the rear axle (cos there's no lsd and disk brakes) then the firewall needs to be modified to accommodate the hydraulic clutch, and to make room for the ecu Then there's wiring and changing interior trim so all in all its a massive project. will definitely have to kill a trueno apex in Japan to get the parts for this, which I don't think will come cheap. @Shan Can you tell me what colour those 2 cars were. and If u can remember their regs. I'm trying to form a database of all the ae86s in SL. So I appreciate anybody's input The car I looked at was 15- and wine red and it was apparently bought from young fellah in kirulapone. Any history on this car? These cars being rare and interesting I believe most people have kept track of them. in this regard I remember a shabby red trueno hatch being converted to a diesel 10 or 15 years ago in a garage a few doors down. That was pure sacrilege. If I wasnt so small I'd have done my best to rescue it.

I visited a few other forums after I posted this and from what I gather AE85s have weaker chassis compared to the 86. The reason being smaller welds between joints making it cheaper to construct according to them. Hope someone here can verify this. That said it is lighter than the more expensive model but the handling suffers for sure. In my short drive i noticed nothing spectacular about it over a 20+ year old jap car. What other cars have u guys seen? @Dev I'm referring to the 17- white Coupe. Other one I saw was a red hatch (16- if I recall right) @Shan any more info on the 2 cars you saw?

Hi guys! I always had a soft spot for the Ae86 and it got worse after I watched the Initial D movie coupla weeks back. I always wanted to buy one in whatever condition, sort everything out in my spare time, lower it. add a 20v blacktop engine and RS watanabes, and give it the panda paintjob. So I went to have a look at this Trueno coupe today, Which I saw on the road once and appeared to be in good nick. It turned out to be an 1984 (pre facelift) Ae85 (non sporty model) with the 3A-U engine and the small headrests. The best bits about the car were its Body (-hood and trim), engine and the A/C. as for the rest I'm not too sure. It seemed I'll probably be spending the best part of this year walking from parts shop to parts shop trying to find all the missing bits. However he seemed happy to part with it for around 450k. Is it worth going through the trouble of redoing the whole car and then adding the ae86 bits to an ae85, which will always be a cheap ae85 on the papers? or is doing up a well kept ae86 the more sensible option? On a side note, how many of these cars do we actually have in SL? I've seen that bloggers white coupe and a red and black 16- hatch going up n down the baseline. Any AE86 related discussion is also welcome

Did mine in gold 4 years back. cost less than 1000 for paint and labour. removing the wheels and masking certain bits was as hard as it got. Did it at the local paint shop. I went with normal paint. Its still looking all shiny and new. The only problem is brake dust tends to accumulate on the surface and make it look a little dirty. Will be changing colour to red soon p.s. don't forget the sand off the rusty bits.

JadeyBlitzen replied to rangerover's topic in General Automotive
I use farecla wax top. i'm pretty happy with the results. but you'll probably have to find a way to get it shipped to sl -
