the underpinnings do indeed sound very sexy!, just as a matter of academic interest, is this car on the market by any chance? i agree with the sentiments in the post, it all depends on rarity and condition even here..... as for decent tinkers, well i thought the guy who sorted my bug out did a decent job of it, of course im not hugely qualified to judge such things, but it did come out all right considering the nick it was in........ the main reason i asked was because of a certain somewhat interesting (american) vehicle that appeared in last weeks observer classifieds.... perhaps you noticed it?

this brings me to a question i've been wondering about lately, just how bad does a car have to be for it to be not a viable restoration, in an SL context anyway? obviously countries like the UK have different views, since there is no shortage of interesting cars there, but when we look at it from our perspective (mostly the fact that out of the ordinary classics are few and far between), what kind of nick does it have to be in? for example, this particular car, will it make a viable restoration?
  3. ah so NOW you admit that there are people suffering do you?? But according to all you've said earlier Sri Lanka was the best place on earth and NOBODY had any hardships thanks to the great MR!! and guys, agree 100% about everything else said here, apologies for raking it up, but some people are just so gullible its shocking....
  4. I dont think you need supernormal (?) powers to be able to look at a pair of photographs and realise that our beloved prez is looking WAY more err.... "prosperous" now than he ever did back then....... People in this forum are more educated and they understand the difference between inflation rate and the COL. yup, they understand all right.... its thanks to views like this that MR and his collection of jokers can merrily continue to screw daylights out of the country in general, while enjoying the Ritz Carlton and other such luxuries, after all, if the people dont think there is anything wrong, everything must be peachy right?? WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE MATE! (black coffee of course, since we cant afford milk anymore)
  5. yeah, they ARE built like rocks, in fact Jeremy Clarkson and the Top Gear boys (who else? ) once tried to destroy an early 90's LN 65 hilux by among other things, setting fire to it, hitting it with a wrecking ball, driving into a tree etc (those are just the tame ones btw).... below is the full spectacle http://youtube.com/watch?v=Lrk6vsb77xk
  6. Original engine, been rebuilt once at approx 250k
  7. The AL Classifieds does have several jeeps of different kinds on offer.... not very many unmodified ones though.... what kind of budget range are you looking at?
  8. are you sure that isnt a Million Kilometres?? Mercedes IS german after all, and they tend to think in Metrics...... anyway this Volvo P1800 has over 4 Million KM!! as for SL, we have two vans in office which have over 300k each. The older one, an LH113 is nearer to 500k!, and my trusty LN106 has 365,000 KM on the clock, genuine, because we've had it from new......
  9. quite impressive indeed! i wouldnt have wanted to be in his shoes though! imagine driving up and down across america every month!! however just to put this in perspective, check out this baby.... world record holder for highest mileage in a single vehicle, 40 years and still going strong! http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/26/man-wit...-for-3-million/ http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2006/09/26/023106.html
  10. sharkster, I wonder if we're both thinking about the same individual here......VERY familiar
  11. Congrats dilllon thats a VERY sweet looking ride there.... whats the YOM? does she have any mods/any future plans?
  12. ade, that reminds me, back in school, our Agriculture section had a Cow named toyota, complete with the badge and everything!!! perhaps nilantha drives a relation?
  13. belated wishes mate...... hope you had a Rocking time!
  14. and pray tell, what exactly did you mean by that? the general assumption if you make the statement "See nissan users" is that you are in fact talking about people who drive nissan cars, since to the best of my knowledge, Nissan do not make washing machines or refrigerators and so on.... so you really cant fault anybody for assuming things, you've brought it upon your own silly self by some of your previous statements. Several people have said this before but it doesnt seem to get into that head of yours, (which makes us all worry about the state of the inside of it, hence ash's advice to seek professional help, which you might want to consider)...... TAKE OFF THE BLINKERS MATE!!!
  15. First ride (note, passenger not drive) by CAR magazine, including video.... it sounds AWESOME http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/news.php?sid=1174&page=1 they have a full package including some great wallpaper shots..... enjoy
  16. you might want to get a second opinion on that engine..... your existing one might still be salvageable drop me a mail at [email protected], i can give you a lead to a guy who can take a look at it for you....
  17. the chinese auto industry and safety dont seem to get along too well..... a crash test i came across on youtube.... for the "brilliance BS6", some mid sized sedan, makes you wonder what the QQ would actually end up like... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F06LjugtIUo
  18. the FB15 is not a car that is difficult to find in Sri Lanka, there are dozens for sale at any one time, so you have a fairly large choice 25k is a very low mileage for an ordinary jap car, its most likely that it has been "clocked" i.e. the meter has been turned back...... turning back meters is a common practice and isnt really cause for much worry....... but since the owner is reluctant to go to the agents something seems wrong...... you are the buyer after all, so insist that the owner bring the car to A*W...... if you dont stand firm and something is wrong with the car, remember that it will end up being YOUR problem. if he is still reluctant, you should probably leave this particular car alone...... like i said, FB15's are not exactly rare cars in the SL market...
  19. oh thats just lovely..... so what happens to people who drive classics?
  20. actually, i've owned and used a 406 myself, and driven several 210 series carinas often.... so i actually do know a bit about what they are like
  21. when you say "acceptable" what exactly do you mean?? Gtam im guessing was talking about the stock tyre/rim setup on the carinas...... any mods would change things considerably...... and again, mods differ from car to car.... stock 406's are in a completely different class mate...... ... have you ever tried one?
  22. this reliability issue that people keep banging on about is a selective thing..... some 406's are absolute dogs while some provide completely unproblematic service..... the key problem here are the agents, with 406 and indeed any other peugeot, "Agent Maintained" is not a good thing! Also (personal opinion), the used 406's imported from europe in droves in 2002/03, which are the ones which have the later reg plates, seem somewhat more problematic than those which came in brand new.. as for the ride comfort/high speed stability issue, i've personally done an indicated 105 MPH down gregory's road at midnight once, felt solid as a rock not to mention miles of driving on typical uncarpeted backlanes and roads at a fair clip, absolutely amazing combo of ride, handling and body control....... and on the comfort front, the 407 is a completely different ballgame because its suspension was tuned with "sports car like" handling as the top priority, so ride comfort on certain surfaces (like most of those we get here) suffers as a consequence..... the 406 is actually MUCH better speaking from experience on Sri Lankan roads..... as Gtam pointed out, it feels as if it could almost have been designed for our roads, much like the old 504's felt.
  23. its quite a process, one that would be better handled by a mechanic who knows VWs.... if you dont mind me asking, why cant you take it to a mechanic?
  24. see below
  25. do they work on normal steel wheels as well? and what would the cost be like? i'm trying to undo 27 years of running on SL roads with the bug at the moment....
