You dont need a special permit. Just go to the IRD 1st floor if i remember correctly, get your TIN (Tax payer Identification Number) & VAT. Go to customs web site. Download the appropirte form. Fill it get a photo paste it get it signed by a Attornery At Law, or JP. Submit the same to the customs 3rd floor counter. Get the proforma from the shipper. Open LC. When the ship arrives get a clearing agent to clear the vehicle for you after paying the due duties. rgds. Fire Dragon

Normally a car under the 3.5 yrs and a van of under 5 yrs can be imported to sl. If you are abroad and has a car or a van which is over the age limit you can bring it under the blue permit scheme. You should have the car in the foreign country in your name for over 1yr. The advantage is if it is a 6yrs old vehicle you get the maximum depriciation. However, under the present duty scheme old vehicles are handled under a different HS where you dont get the benifit of depriciation. Blue permits are issued by the import controllers office, Hemas building, Bristol Street, Colomobo 01. Chk their web site. I dont know wheather the scheme is still active. Fire Dragon

Can you give me the first few digits of the chasis no. As per the prices in SL i have no idea what so ever. Fire Dragon

Toyota Vitz, about 4000km, costs about 14 lacks in Japan. If it is 2008/11 then the depricaition you will be getting is 80%. The duty would be 10.50 lacks. If it is 2008/06 then you will get a dip of about 75% and the duty will be around 10.25 lacks. If you import yourself after getting a proforma invoice it will be cheap. If you you buy it from a car importer it will be costly bec they will keep their profit and they have to pay 2500 rupees per each one hundred thousand spent on the vehicle + 1% BTT. Hope this is helpful. Fire Dragon

If it is within the range (this range is given in the customs website for each vehicle (www.customs.gov.lk) you dont need import controllers permit. It is for the vehecles over that age which are called over aged vehicles. The stuff you get for blue permits etc. These vehicles fall under a specific HS code which attract a differnt duty. Therefore, it is not worth to get them down right now bec you dont get the benifit of the depreciation. Fire Dragon

Go to the IRD. Obtain the 25% income tax permit. Submit it along with the Customs declaration. The base for your duty will be 25% less than for a person who does not have the permit. Engine capacity, duty percentage etc will depend on the vehicle you are planning to get down. Fire Dragon

Give me the first digits of the chasis no

Even if the value of a vehicle is high in the exporting country there is a very slim chance of the agents declaring the same in SL. The reason is they will have to pay a higher duty. Therefore, they may declare a lesser agents value for the models they are importing. Have you seen the agents val your self. I am sure it is much less than what you have quoted.

Wrong. This is not a confidential info. Customs declaration is a must to veryfy the vehi has been imported legally. What if someone brings down parts, assembles a vehi, buy a book that is already registered and use that number to the vehicle. At sometime or other it will be seized and you would have been taken for a ride. Ask for the customs declaration, chk the chasis and engin number and chk with the rmv wheather it has been legally imported. Also be very sure that the actual chasis nu is not tampered with in the vehicle. Gov analist can detect it easily. With regard to TV etc what you say is correct. Still the the burden of proof of the leagal importation falls on the person in possession of the item.

If you can give the first digits of a chasis no of the vehicles you are interested in (eg NZE141, NZT240, NZT260) I can provide helpful details. Fire Dragon

Simple for cars six months or less no dep. 06months to 1yr 90% of the value, 1-1.5 years 80%. Just log on to customs web site at www.customs.gov.lk. Full depriciation table is given. Fire Dragon

Since your vehicle is a 2006 one you are entitled for a full depriciation which is 50%. So your value will be around 1 million yen. You will have to add around 60000 yen for freight and another 15000 yen for the insurance. I dont know about your options. If auto you will have to add around 50000 yen. So you will arrive at the total CIF value of 1.25million yen. Multiply this by the exchange rate which changes. let us say it is 1.2363. Then you can arrive at the CIF in sri lankan currencies which is 1545375 rupees. Duties will be imposed on this. If the value is around 1,200,000 rupees the CID at 30% 380000, PAL at 5% 65000, XID at 32% 770000, VAT at 20% 530000, NBT at 3% 78000, RDL at 5% 150000, SRL at 1.5% 17000. Add these and you will arrive at the total duties (approx). Hope this is helpful. The HS code should be 87042191 (pl chk). Hope this is helpful. Fire Dragon

Anybody who has imported a vehicle after 01/06/2010 would have paid for the new tariff rate. Go to any seller, ask for the customs declaration for which you have a right to veryfy proper duties have been paid. In the cage 46 of the declaration you will find the value (CIF) in sri lankan currencies. Cage 47 will contain the total duties paid. If you add these two you will find the total cost of the vehicle. Just bear in mind that the customs declaration has to be later than 01/06/2010. Check the last sundays hit add. It contained some importer name importing at this rate. rgds. Fire Dragon

All the importers are paying this amount. In the real life scenario it should be lesser. Bec duties are calculated on the agents value irrespective of the amount actually paid for the vehicle (If the amount paid is higer than the agents value then it is considered. But the importers rarely do). If you yourself imports a vehicle the same rates will apply. rgds. Fire Dragon
