SRI LANKANS SCREW UP THINGS IN STYLE Sri Lankan car parts face ban in Pakistan over Indian taint: report June 29, 2007 (LBO) – Auto part exports from Sri Lanka to Pakistan would be blocked because Indian-owned firms in the island are starting to "sneak" products to the country under a "faulty" free trade agreement, reports said. Pakistan's The News said India has managed to ship automotive part through a faulty free trade agreement which it claimed was a "shocking development." Pakistani officials were quoted as saying that tariff concessions would only be given to Sri Lankan exports of Betel leaves, if tyres, tubes and other spares made by Indian firms were blocked or placed in a negative list where existing concessions were removed. Indian Problem The APP news service quoted an advisor to the Pakistan finance ministry, Ashfaque Hasan Khan as saying that tariff on Betel leaves would be dropped from 35 to 20 percent only if Sri Lanka bans auto spare exports. The report said a Pakistani government decision has been taken to "to safeguard national interest" and to protect the domestic auto industry. "We would give duty concession to Sri Lanka on import of betel leaves and enhance the import quantity to 1,200 metric tonnes only if Sri Lanka did not export any auto parts to Pakistan," Ashfaque told APP. "All the auto-parts exports from Sri Lanka to Pakistan will be included in the negative list." Exports of Sri Lankan made tyres and tubes were still small at 169,000 US dollars. India's CEAT runs the island's largest pneumatic tyre plants through two joint ventures. Sri Lanka has been attracting investment into the country touting its access to Indian and Pakistan. Sweet Deals Pakistan's Economic Coordination Committee chaired by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, Pakistan had been advised that tariffs on herbal cosmetics, biscuits, confectionery and ceramic tiles made in Sri Lanka would be removed once the issue of auto parts is addressed, The News also reported. Fully domestic owned Sri Lankan firms such as the Hemas group has been test marketing personal care products to Pakistan. The firm is also trying to strike a deal with a confectionary maker to market their products, but no progress has been reported after an initial announcement of the start of negotiations. Due to heavy protectionism, as well as regional rivalries intra-regional trade in South Asia has been restricted and the region has high levels of poverty. Attempts to liberalize trade under the aegis of the regional grouping, South Asian Association of Regional Corporation (SAARC) also largely failed over Pakistan and Indian rivalries. Opening Up However Sri Lanka has been pursuing bi-lateral trade deals after multi-lateral arrangements were slow to produce results. The deals had negative lists to exempt existing visible trade (such as Betel leaves) in order to pacify protectionist trade lobbies, but trade experts were confident that opportunities to entirely new items previously not traded would come up as soon as private entrepreneurial ingenuity was allowed to work unfettered. However analysts say the latest spat over rubber products and earlier problems Sri Lanka had with hydrogenated vegetable oils and copper with India shows that protectionism is very much alive and kicking in the region which is lagging behind the rest of the world. Following a balance of payments crisis in 1991, India also switched to more liberal economic policies which has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and is making the country a global powerhouse. But India has also been engaged in several trade disputes with Sri Lanka, after being egged on by local lobbies to help domestic industry which is heavily tariff protected. Sri Lanka has been systematically dismantling trade barriers since 1977 and another round of liberalization was followed after 1995, despite some local criticism, giving rise to a growing export sector. But weak macro-economic management which pushes up domestic inflation and made interest rates volatile has frequently undermined local industries. http://www.lankabusinessonline.com/fullsto...;SEARCH_TERM=17 -
Taken from AUTOBLOG Shot at 2007-06-28 In recent years, products made in China have gained more renown for being cheap than for the quality control behind them. Up until now, inexpensive sneakers that fall apart after a few weeks or DVD players that work erratically have been more of an annoyance and an economic threat as opposed to a physical one. Recent headlines would suggest that might be changing, however. The contaminated pet food that killed dozens of cats not long ago and the video of a Chinese car collapsing in on itself during a European crash test bring the issue of potentially hazardous Chinese imports to a whole new level. Foreign Tire Sales, Inc. of Union, NJ is suing China's Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. over a series of catastrophic failures of tires they manufactured that resulted in a fatal car crash in Pennsylvania. Hangzhou has been manufacturing tires sold by FTS and other distributors that left out an extra layer of rubber between the steel belts, causing them to overheat and have tread separation similar to the Firestone tires that failed on Ford Explorers several years ago. The tires may need to be recalled and FTS doesn't have the financial resources to deal with something like that, so it's suing the Chinese company to cover the expenses since they built the tires in a way that differed from what was specified. The Wall Street Journal's report on the matter contains additional details, and is well worth a read. WHY BUY CHINESE ? - BUY KELANI TIRES http://www.autoblog.com/2007/06/25/as-if-p...es-now-failing/

SOURCE - http://tech.yahoo.com/blog/hughes/6574 I was reading through an AFP report on Yahoo! News that says Serbia is now treating people with Internet addictions. This counseling center considers anyone who is not interested in daily activities with family and friends as a potential Internet addict and looks for other signs such as spending prolonged hours online, turning to virtual friends, and isolation. I'm not sure exactly how they treat Internet addiction, but they say treatment usually lasts one year. After reading this, I headed over to Net Addiction and took an Internet Addiction Test (IAT) that told me my Internet usage is causing occasional problems in my life. I won't take that test too seriously because my occupation requires me to be online a lot of the time. However, I will keep that in mind next time I choose surfing the web over, er, household chores. Can you blame me? Internet addiction can be harmful for those who delve into the darker side of the web, such as online gambling, cybersex, online affairs, and online gaming. But how do you know when you or someone you love is addicted to the Internet? When is it time to pull the plug and seek treatment? Here's a list of common symptoms to watch out for: 1. Lying about how much time is spent online. 2. General decrease of physical activity and social life. 3. Neglecting obligations at home, work, or school to spend time online. 4. Spending too much money on computer equipment or Internet activities. 5. Feeling a constant desire to be online when they're away from the computer. 6. Going online to escape real world problems. 7. Disregarding the emotional or physical consequences of being in front of a computer all day. 8. Denial of the problem. There is much debate about the reality of Internet addiction. The bottom line is that anything can be harmful when abused. If you find yourself spending more time online than with real people, then plan for some quality time with the family or friends every other day. Find an activity the whole family enjoys and make a date with them. I personally disconnect completely every weekend and get out of the house so I'm not tempted to check email. I also have movie nights and "Lost" nights during the week, which are a great excuse to turn off the computer. Different things work for different people, so just find something you enjoy and don't hesitate to shut the computer off. What do you do to escape cyberspace? TEST !!! http://www.netaddiction.com/resources/inte...iction_test.htm

Cars Crushed In Street Racing Crackdown Car Culture Meets Car Crusher As Southern California Police Put Squeeze On Street Racing http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/06/20/...in2959138.shtml (AP) Charles Hoang winced when the whoosh went out of the tires. Daniel Maldonado took pictures with a digital camera as glass exploded and rained down to the ground. The cars the teens had so meticulously souped up and tricked out were crushed Wednesday as part of a crackdown on illegal street racing in Southern California. "That's my heart, my dream," said Hoang, 18, of Chino, who was surrounded by friends as his 1998 Acura Integra was put into a compactor. "That's my girlfriend, the love of my life. The cops can crush my car, but they can't crush my memories." Authorities destroyed six vehicles Wednesday at an auto graveyard, hoping would-be racers think again after looking at the mashed machines. Illegal street racing is responsible for or suspected in 13 deaths in Southern California since March. The thrill-seeking, adrenaline-pumping activity is rampant in Riverside and San Bernardino counties east of Los Angeles where rows of tract homes line wide streets that attract racers. Nearly 1,000 people _ drivers and spectators _ have been arrested for investigation of street racing activities over the past two years in San Bernardino County alone. Police need a court order to destroy the cars. They must prove that the serial or identification numbers on a vehicle or its parts are removed, altered or destroyed. Police said they have managed to reduce illegal racing and related fatal collisions, but know the underground hobby still thrives. "We are making a dent," said Ontario police Cpl. Jeff Higbee. "But it's summertime and ... we expect to see more activity." Hoang said he was caught late last year racing his prized car, on which he spent at least $10,000 to get into top shape. The 350-horsepower engine topped out at 160 mph, Hoang said, swearing it could beat a Corvette or even a Ferrari. When police popped open the hood, Hoang said, they found a stolen transmission. Hoang flashed a receipt for the transmission he bought from his father who runs an auto shop and doubted the item was hot. "Everything on that car was practically brand new," Hoang said as he watched his car get moved to auto death row. "They should take out the stuff that matters, auction it off, and give the money to charity." Because racers put heavy stress on their vehicles, they often burn out or blow up parts. Higbee said the need for the expensive parts has created a "theft mill" where additional cars _ usually Hondas or Acuras _ are stolen and stripped of the necessary replacements. Most of the cars police examine are illegally modified. Sergio Zavala, 18, was pulled over in his 1993 yellow Honda Civic for a broken tail light in December. He had purchased a B-20 Vtech engine with a double-overhead cam a couple months before, and after a police investigation, was told it was stolen. Zavala, who admits he's been involved in street racing, estimates he and his mother spent about $10,000 on improvements to his car. After watching his Civic demolished, Zavala is left without a car as he plans to attend a fire academy in the fall. "It's heartbreaking to see this," said Zavala, who graduated from high school last week. "This is where all my time and money went." Maldonado also said he put plenty of time and effort working on his 1992 black Honda Civic. He was stopped in November by police in what Higbee described as an area where racers gather. The 18-year-old mechanic said a vehicle identification sticker apparently fell off and without it, police suspected some of the parts were stolen. Maldonado stood several feet away from his car as it was pounded into a heap of metal. Maldonado said he has taken the advice of police by racing legally on one of several race courses around Southern California. For the money spent in fines and other penalties _ on average about $5,000 for illegally modified cars _ Higbee said street racers could compete aout 250 times a year at a legitimate track. "If you have to race, take it to a legal venue," Higbee said. "But as long as they keep racing illegally, we keep crushing their cars." All three men who saw their vehicles destroyed said they believe illegal street racing will continue to prosper across the region. "It will never go away," Maldonado said. "If it's in your heart, you will continue to do it until you can't anymore." Copyright 2007 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
