I have now seen it and it smokes if you pedal heavily following getting going (it's 1.3, so you need to pedal a bit), but no smoke at all once you get going. The smoke comes out only during the start up phase. No idea whether the smoke is higher if it is idle for a few days. Oil burn however is almost confirmed.

Stig, thank you very much. Yes, he had noticed a drop in oil levels. I have no idea about the plugs though. But given that it apparently has an ignition issue too, how to know whether the issue plug condition was caused by oil pumping or not? How long might he be able to run on the same setup? And where to source a good engine, if you can give some hints? Obviously it did not emerge overnight. But I too am surprised since when I saw the car a couple of days after his purchase, it performed smoothly and had no hint of smoke at all. I wonder what was the mechanism used by the previous owner to hide this?

Thanks! I too suggested of replacing the engine, but he wants to wait and see to find out what is the best long term solution (and since he only recently bought it, I guess probably the dude is kinda cash strapped right now too).

One of my friends has recently bought a Corolla EE110 (1.3L, 1997). Till about one month from purchase, he had no issues with the vehicle. But he has now found out that the car is actually burning oil. There is no visible leak and the engine heat is at the average level too. There is a little bit of white smoke coming out when starting/racing but it does not exhaust any smoke once you get going. According to him, it has 1.70k km on it, which he now believes is doctored. He's not a very rich guy, so he must get going with this car anyway. Which options has he got? What could be done to fix the issue at a minimal cost (rather than the obvious oil top up). Would appreciate your expert advise P.S: He says that it is slow to start up if kept idle for about a day. He's not a heavy runner, probably about 100km per week.

Are there any fuel consumption/performance specific differences between the two AE110 shapes available ? I have noted that both (1.5l) use the same engine. However isn't the pre-facelift model a tad bit longer than the newer model ? Around when did the facelift version start coming out? Was it late 1997 or early 1998? Thanks

Is there a significant performance/fuel burn difference between these versions ? I read the past threads about them, but could not find about the differences between these models apart from the different YoMs. Is a Sprinter 110 likely to have a lower resale value over the Corolla 110? Are there any significant fuel burn differences between the different trims as well ?

I really don't have much knowledge about the civic's trim levels. Could someone please enlighten me as to what does EXi mean ? Were all EXis VTEC?

Actually not 'I hate' but my family hates. Nevertheless a swift stock sound is ok, I would not like a noisy one like the one shown in that video.

Hi, how is the performance of the non-VTEC EK3? I'm not speaking of sporty performance, but rather the usual performance for an overtake etc. And how does it compare economics wise to the VTEC? I know that the VTEC is superior, but I'm not a fan of the Ferrari-like sound (which in fact seems to have been spoilt in most cars now to sound like gas pressure issue - the 'bora bora' sound, you know what I mean.). If the VTEC sound only comes into action after I pass 6000rpm and at about 80-100kmh that's fine with me. But if the sound is active from around 30-40kmh that's what I dislike. Or does it not ?

Isn't the EK3 VTEC quite comparable to or perhaps even better than the CS1 when it comes to fuel economics ? And you can have a Civic Ferio for about 1.8M.

I have decided that I should go for either a Civic or a Bluebird. Is it too risky to take a lease for an EK3?

Well, what I want is to find out the best car choice for 1M and that's what all this is about. So please share your thoughts on this. As mentioned many times already, the three things that I'm looking for are fuel economy, good resale value and a contemporary look. I'm not looking forward to buying something that looks like a 2012 Altima for 1M, but rather something that has a 21st century-ish look and not like a 1980s box shape model. The Japanese choices that are left to me seem to be the EG8, Presea R10 and Bluebird U13. And I tend to like the EG8 better, because I've heard that it is better overall than the other two, although it looks kinda too sporty. But aren't the likes of EG8 likely to get quite devalued in say, three years from now, given that they'll be almost 25yrs at that time ?

I've seen plenty of these type of ads in newspaper classifieds "Leasing in one hour" "Only the book is needed" "Available islandwide" "Interest rate 0.1%". And they keep getting published every week. Why doesn't some regulatory authority, be it police or the Central Bank, take action on these ?
