  1. BJ40/43 or 4DR5 can be heavily modified and are excellent off roaders. I fully second the comments made by some other members on cost of modifying and maintaining a LR. It would be at least twice as much as what a BJ40/43 or 4DR5 would cost. In terms of reliability as well the Japs would be better than the LR. Cheers!
  2. Undoubtadly Mitsubishi is the best overall. Ease of maintenance, second hand value, reliability, sourcing of parts etc... the Mitsubishi is way ahead of the rest. For sure you should be able to find a J24 for less than 1M. In fact it should be between 5-7 lakhs depending on the condition. You may even be able to find a J44 for less than a million. Still it is a buyers market. So dont hesitate to negotiate with the sellers and you will strike good deals.
  3. I was hunting for ES8/ES5 just about 5 months back but ended up buying a Nissan D22 double cab for which I have absolutely no regrets. Anyway 2.7-3.2M for sure you will be able to find a really good face lift civic. While I was hunting at that time, there was one 2004 EXi (brand new) which went for just 2.6 and then there was a 2005Exi with just 31,000km on the clock which went for 3M. Both cars were in really good shape. Although there are other cars which are well within your budget, I think you should stick to an ES8/5 since it is a very nice vehicle. All the best!
  4. All are nuts!
  5. Damn! Not AGAIN!
  6. I hope the prices you guys have quoted are after discount. You should be able to get a good 20 - 30% discount on list price for all brands. With my experience, BFG will give unmathced mileage. The best I have ever used but the ride is a bit rough. Micky Thompson mileage is not so great but the drive is very soft. Excellent stability and control. Savero...sigh! If you can afford, go for the BFG. Your return will be much more than the price you pay.
  7. Check whether body parts are available outside. You can buy Spare parts from SML without any problem at reasonable prices. But for most of the Isuzu double cabs, finding body parts could be a pain.
  8. let's drop this side topic. If we can give some help to the orginator of the thread let's give that info. Otherwise let's not battle over which Jeep is better since different people rate this differently. That is the beauty. Otherwise there will be demand for just one type
  9. Fully agree with HardHat. Drop the conversion idea mate. It is like marrying an absolutely beautiful and extremely rich woman and taking her to Shanthi Vihar for dinner and buying her Blacknight cosmetics to cut down her maintenance cost! You know what I mean? Regards L Board
  10. If you want to sort out RMV matters properly, it will be 325 number you will get for sure. About this project, this is my openion and you may disregard it completely at your discretion. A new engine, plus engine mounts plus labour will surely cost you at least Rs 450,000/= Even after spending that money and effort, you won't be guaranteed that the machine will be as good as its orginal fuel it was meant to run on (possibility of vibrations, higher wear and tear of parts etc). People don't do gas conversions any more because it was a complete failure. It ruines engines. Although people do this type of conversions to older vehicles, for a 2002 model vehicle, this sounds quite awkward. Specially putting 325 number on a 2002 vehicle will kill its image. You may ultimately be better off paying that extra cost for petrol. If cost of fuel is such a big concern, you can consider the older version of Montero/Pajero original diesel which you can easily buy for Rs 4.5M Cheers L Board
  11. Why would you want to spend Rs 600,000 for this when you can buy a Mitsubishi J24 with 4DR5 engine for the same or even a little less? With a J24 you will have a better 2nd hand value, plenty of parts, reliability etc. About 1 year back when the market was at a peak, hardtop Daihatsu was going for about Rs 450,000 so why would you want to spend 600K now for a soft top when the market is down? Get the input from an "Expert of OLD JEEPS" to get the correct picture. You may meet M@nagala at Buthg@muwa road for a solid, humble openion but I don't think this forum can give you a very good idea.
  12. Before checking the gear box, you may want to check your clutch and pressure plates.
  13. Hey congrads! You did a risk return calculation and went for it. Most of the members here only look at the risk and collapse. You will move forward for sure. Excellent example. All the best with the lovely car!
  14. Hi few facts: 1) Whether European or Japanese, parts at agents are sky high. People say Jap parts are very cheap.....yes cheap out side the agents but mostly those are duplicates / fakes. So the key is whether you want to maintain at the agents or not irrespective of Jap or Euro. 2) 406 is a lovely car for sure. Style, comfort, power, stability belongs to a completely different league compared to Japs. If you can buy a well maintained one and if you are willing to spend 40% more on fuel and 40% more on maintenance compared to Jap, go for it. You won't regret. The prices have come down. You should be able to grab a good deal if you can afford about 1.5M. Chears. L Board
  15. Legacy B4 is for sure what you are looking for. Accord is no where compared to the B4.
  16. Did the rider die or did he survive? Anyone knows what really happened?
  17. My Nissan D22 double cab manual with 3.2L diesel angine. It does 8-8.5 in city and 11+ outstations. I believe that is good enough for a 3.2L engine. I heard the 2.8L Toyota 3L engine does less.

    X Trail Gt

Hi Friend. Did you advertise your Xtrail GT on last Sunday's newspapers or are you advertising it on this Sunday? Whatever it is, 10kmpl is rubbish...unless you live in a country where you can constantly drive at 80+kmph
  19. Hello. J44 will be the better option overall. Good offroad capabilities, can be modified heavily, better on availability of parts, reliable, better resaleability. You will also be able to find a decent one without much of an effort at a reasonable price. Forget about the CJ! Very few on roads and you will for sure have a problem with parts. Don't fall into that trap. Everyday you will have to run around the country (Kurunegala, Kandy etc in other vehicles) to find parts for the CJ! Clearly leave that out. Please drop a personal message to know of places that can do solid modifications.
  20. If you are going to do long journeys frequently, please consider the reliability of the vehicle as well. I don't think you would want to be stranded in an isolated area. So irrespective of the model, make sure you buy one that has done low milage and well mained. From my personal experience...I've used 3 old jeeps (1987 Trooper, 1988 Trooper/bighorn, 1982 Pajero short) and despite the fact that all these vehicles were fully restored and well maintained, they did give me trouble on and off. Now I own a D22 (2004) and there is absolutely no question about reliability. Just start and go! I believe that is the peace of mind you would want to have when you do long journeys frequently. Diesel jeeps are very expensive and you can buy a diesel cab for nearly half that price. I believe a 2004 diesel Nissan Petrol will cost over 8M whereas I paid less than 4M to the 2004 D22. However, the jeeps tend to be more comfortable than the cabs. If you can tell me your precise budget, I can be more precise in telling you proper options. Then you can narrow down your search.
  21. If you are buying a trooper, go for one which has got a importerd body/engine under permit. Most of the ones that I see now are these. They perform much better compared to the ones that were brough brand new (the semi high roof ones). The 4JB1 2.8TDi will give you excellent performance. I owned one fully restored to orginal condition, then a one which had a new body and a 28TDi engine and then a Pajero. I loved the 4JB1 2.8TDi. Super fast, stable and much comfortable than the Pajero which I bought later. I am sure the 3.1TDi will be much better. There are Troopers/Bighorns out there, but as rightly said earlier by another member, there are for sure more Pajeros than Troopers/Bighorns. Land Cruiser does between 6-8kmpl in Colombo and it is more to the 6 side than the 8 side. Now I own a Nissan D22 double cab and it gives me 8.5kmpl in Colombo. anyway this will be of no use to you since you are looking for a SUV. Out of the Isuzu, Nissan and Mitsubishi I have used, for sure the Isuzu engine can be rated highest!
  22. Undoubtadly Isuzu trooper/Bighorn will be the most economical. I had a 2.8TDi (box model) which did 11kmpl even in Colombo and I heard that the 3.1TDi (round newer model) does even more! Worst pick will be the Y60 which does less than 6kmpl in Colombo. With the Pajero you will get 8kmpl in Colombo. You may add 2-3Kmpl for outstation run for all the above figures. Cheers!
  23. It seems that the owner has abandoned both the project and this thread It was a too compliated project to begin with I think
  24. Toyotal LN109 1997 G number SSRX in mint condition can be bought for just 3M (amazing!) Toyota LN166 2004 brand new can be bought for 3.5M Nissan D22 1997 YOM registered in 2004 (H number) can be bough for 2.9M Its happenning!!!!!!!!!!! The sellers consider themselves lucky if they can find a buyer even for the prices mentioned above. These are the latest offers confirmed by some sellers recently. The nose dive has just begun for commercial/dual purpose type vehicles. I heard the car market is not that bad yet.
