  1. Check engine lights don't always work when there's a sensor problem. Once my camshaft sensor failed but the check engine light didn't indicate anything. I figured something was wrong because my rev counter stopped working when driving. After I parked the car and turned off the ignition it just refused to start again, and I had to call the agent's breakdown service to fix it.
  2. Thanks for the info. CVT gearbox on a GT X-trail? Don't they come with manual transmission? Anyways will mail you.
  3. Hi, Having only owned cars all my life I am finally considering going for a Japanese SUV purely because I reckon it will be cheaper to maintain in the long run than a car. The last few days with all the rains the roads around my area have become worse and my car has taken quite a beating with all the potholes its gone into! People I know who own SUV's say that apart from the higher fuel consumption, I will probably have less repairs over a 4 year period than I would with a car. Any SUV owners in this forum agree? I can imagine the suspension being hardier. I'm on the lookout for used GT X trail or if I get a decent raise this year, maybe I'll look at the new Vitara. Anyone with any experience with these?
  4. I know what you mean. Its only when you don't have cable that you realise how pathetic our local programming is. Considering the mess this country is in, you'd think the authorities would have better things to do than pick on cable TV stations! Bunch of jokers our politicians!
  5. Hi, I have this same problem over the last few weeks and a lot of helpful people on this forum gave me advice. This weekend I'm changing my plugs, fuel filters and doing a tuneup because its long overdue. I don't know about Carina's but in my Primera a faulty camshaft sensor caused the rpm to die and I got it replaced last year. Strangely enough last evening I was forced to pump petrol at Ceypetco for the first time in years because our company has an account at IOC so I always pump 95 octane there. This morning my car started beautifully first try, and its the first time this has happened in weeks! And there was a noticeable improvement in the smoothness of the engine. Could be that Ceypetco's quality of fuel is better than IOC.
  6. I actually like the current model. Wasn't a fan of it at first but now I've seen quite a few on the road and it looks quite nice in black, with a spoiler and 16" wheels. Havn't driven one yet and the price is crazy but it has a bit of presence!
  7. Thanks for the advice. Will check out Pioneer motors, but shouldn't you do a tuneup once you replace the plugs and filter and isn't A*W the best bet for that? Also if you can let me know a few reliable garages you would recommend to get this done and maybe even get my shocks replaced it would be much appreciated. Have only used A*W for the last few years!
  8. Its a Primera P11. Petrol of course. Thanks for all the advice. Like another poster here said, I suspect the spark plugs and fuel filter also, but been a bit too stingy lately to spend on getting them changed. But its long overdue. There's never enough $ to keep your car maintained. My shocks also need replacing so I'm dreading my next visit to A*W!
  9. Hi, need some advice on a problem I've had for the last 2 weeks. My car has struggled to start in the morning, and also if if the engine is left cold for long periods during the day. I know its been raining in Colombo but the last few days have been fine and its still struggling to start. What happens is that the engine idles very roughly a couple of times and dies. I try it again and the same thing. The third time it always starts fine, and there's no problems in traffic either. It runs very smoothly and never stalls. I've cheked the obvious things like the battery, any other suggestions? The car is barely 3 years old and I do my best to maintain it so this is quite annoying!
