Jadey - there's a difference between public transport in SL and UK, believe me! Over there it's a minor inconvenience, here it's an intimate experience tharindu6 - try not to write in CAPS..

Well, I guess insurance companies charge you according to risk. In her case, they consider her risky.

Importing Dslr Camera Lenses (any Idea What The Tax/duty Etc Costs?)
Saturn replied to Saturn's topic in The Lounge
Nice! If you don't mind me asking.. where did you get it from? The 17-40 should deliver better images but you lose IS (I think the 17-85 has IS?) Please post photos from the 70-200 -

Many people say bad stuff about the ultra cheap tires (Ceat, etc), e.g. "they wreck your suspension".. In my case I use this type of tire and it does OK. I do have the tires very slightly underinflated so it is quite soft and not too stressfull on the suspension. Seems theres just a 1100 difference so I'd recommend the nankang as they seem to have better reputation Summary: if you can go for the nankang or better, if money matters go for the Ceat..

Is it being shown on any channel on Dialog TV?

I don't have specific experience with that lens but I'd recommend you consider the Canon 55-250 IS for its stabilization (or even an L zoom but they are expensive). The 55-250 is relatively inexpensive - street price around $200 (not sure in UK) this is the lens I'm refering to. Hopefully they can give it for a low price with the camera http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-55-250mm-Tel...l/dp/B000V9D5LG update: please also consider getting a 50mm prime http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-EF-50mm-1-8-Lens/dp/B00005K47X This lens has superb image quality, rivaling L series lenses even.. and its mostly affordable -

I would recommend Canon or Nikon. Yes all the others are good but availability of lenses etc is less, especially if you will be living in Sri Lanka anytime in the future, at least there are agents for Canon/Nikon here. Personally I happen to be satisfied with Canon, but lots of people use Nikon equally well. Both are ancient highly reputed established companies. Just a note - Nikon seems to lack autofocus for many primes on their low end units, vs Canon which tends to have AF. Canon also supports exposure bracketing on low end models.. Nikon has a good dynamic mode which achieves similar results. As for color response mentioned by some people, I think this depends on the lens/camera settings - I bet the sensors used by both brands tend to be neutral. One thing I notice is Canon's default settings on basic DSLR's tend to have higher saturation/sharpening. I'm sure one can adjust the Nikons to do the same? Hmm? I thought Nikon lenses were cross compatible across the range.. In fact, aren't they famous for the ability to use really ancient lenses on their modern dSLR's? Are you refering to AF incompatibility? -
1080p delievers a level of detail that's simply breathtaking. A good example is the Dark Knight trailer: http://www.whysoserious.com/happytrails/trailer.htm (On PC, this needs quicktime/vlc player and preferrably a core 2 processor and 1920X1080 resolution, for maximum effect) ps3 is a good idea. Next question - where can I get a PS3 in SL?
-
Are blu ray players available in SL? how about movies? Prices for the movies are quite reasonable on amazon etc.. about the same as DVD's now

True. 2-3 sounds good, max of 5 cars perhaps... anything more and it may be hard to photo each car creatively. I'd suggest a place near a carwash so the cars could be given a last quick wash and a bit of road space - doesn't need much but at least a little area between car and background, perhaps even space for a slow driveby for motion photos.. also preferrably when there's sunlight. Gihan - I'd definitely like to take some more photos of your car - send me a PM sometime

Dilesh, you have chosen some fantastic angles for those photos, and you truly have a good eye for photography even if your HDR/tone mapping is extreme look forward to seeing the rest of the photos you took! it was good to meet you guys! Here are some more pics I liked.. apologies for the slight blurring.. I didn't focus/stop down enough.. please do check out the full size Madz, if you like them, do go ahead and add them to your gallery

That sounds like a great idea. Hopefully by then I will have some more lenses, and (maybe) more skill so can do better
-
I think I met you I was the one lurking in the background Glad you like them! I'm also looking forward to seeing the photos Dilesh took
-
Glad you guys like them! I definitely went overboard with the saturation I was very impressed with the quality of the 18-55IS (I had the non IS version earlier) Next time I will hopefully have some low light primes and (if I'm really lucky) an L maybe

A few more See if you can spot Gihan in this photo.

I love the colors in the sky towards evening in Sri Lanka. In camera settings = extra contrast and saturation. no postprocessing in these photos (except resize, maybe sharpen) Click for full size

Had a chance to meet some of the folks at autolanka.. decided to leave early, but first I took a few photos (am adding them, reload thread to see the rest..) photo info: images handheld, 18-55IS, iso 100-800, pp=resize/contrast/color adjustment only enjoy! Tip: Click to see photos at full size Gihan's Subaru - also in the photo.. Dilesh I believe (If I got your names wrong, sorry!)

Congrats on the 50d! If you don't mind me asking, what made you choose that, as opposed to say the 1000d Your choice of lenses is excellent. You've covered the basic range pretty neatly! You could consider a 50mm 1.8 (should be about 10k at Metro, if/when they get it) The difference is this is a fast low light lens - i.e. it has 1.8 aperture so you can take photos in low light etc. You can do the same with the 18-55 but subject movt would show (in theory, the 18-55 lens starts with an aperture of 3.5, so a 1.8 would let in twice or more light perhaps, see aperture diagram below) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...ure_diagram.svg Aside from good light gathering, the 50mm 1.8 (at f4) attains L grade sharpness (so I'm told) - I do know that it's resolution levels are above the limits of your sensor, and you will notice a vast difference of clarity and sharpness, so I definitely recommend going for one of these lenses. Yes, have a flickr stream but it sux http://www.flickr.com/photos/99573504@N00/ Please do give me yours too @Peri - aside from wide angle, personally, I want to switch to a full frame because it would simply give me more data . Of course the difference isn't as startling as going from a P&S sensor to the APS-C, as this handy wikipedia article shows (you know this more than me but I'm including the link for anyone else who might like it), there IS a difference - also full frame is future proof (there's rumors canon may eventually go full frame only), http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...SensorSizes.svg The above image was one of the main reasons (aside from interchangeable lenses) that I switched from P&S to DSLR Wow, just realized. According to that diagram, the APS-C (I assume this is what we use) covers 329mm square, whereas the 35mm full frame covers 864mm square. That is definitely quite a difference - in fact looks to be more than 2X!! On the subject of stabilization, have you tried a string 'tripod' http://www.instructables.com/id/String-Tripod/ I hear that despite looking silly, they are quite good (not to mention lightweight). the idea is finding a nut that fits in your camera's tripod hole, running a taut line of string from that to under your shoe (or something similar) - the tension from that should keep the camera stable - poor man's IS -

Whoa, hey, don't say that just yet! Especially considering that the 5d has dropped below 2k! http://www.amazon.com/Canon-5D-Digital-Cam...y/dp/B0007Y791C Imagine that..full frame.. wide angle at 24mm... yum Why that thing is nearly as cheap as a 50d, here in SL at least (170k at metro)
