  1. Should think that Conti is better than gates! but either way, given the agents have it in stock and if you have the cash, go for the genuine, but be aware duplicate genuine look a like timing belts are everywhere, so best bet is to go to the agents and buy from them. If you don't have the cash go for Conti, but then again you might have to order online.
  2. Gates are very big in Americas, however they are not so big when it comes to Japanese and European cars. newer the less Gates quality is good and they and think they are the largest manufacturer of belts in the world.
  3. For timing belts the best you can buy are the Continental Contitech, they only produce timing belts in Germany and are the worlds largest manufacturers of timing belts. Also they are the 100% OEM suppliers to companies like BMW, Porsche, Audi, Merc, and pretty much all european brands. their aftermarket quality is the same as OEM. Bosch don't manufacture timing belts, they buy from many different manufacturers. Bando and Sun are both Japanese manufacturers and their timing belts are manufactured in Japan, they are alright as for quality, but they don't even come close to Conti or Gates. Mitsuboshi don't manufacture timing belts. Gates are not available in Sri Lanka!! OEM timing belts are not manufactured by the vehicle manufactures instead they also buy from one of these companies and they newer produce themselves.
  4. All depends on the personal choice, if some person need a SUV, then its definitely a Montero 3.2, since its a very good SUV that has proven it self all over the world, and is some one want a luxury car its got to be either a BMW 520d or a Audi A6 (I personally prefer the Audi over the Beamer). There isn't much choice to be honest here. It seems that a person buying a car for a permit is regarded as an idiot here, however I don't think that many people in this country can ever buy any of these cars if they paid the full duty! also worth noteing that these people are paying around 10,000 rupees or USD 80,000, and for that kind of money you can buy a top of the range luxury car elsewhere in the world. These people have been staved away from owning a luxury car, specially the newly rich population for quiet some time now and this has been their only opportunity to own one. and again even though they are buying a car for a cheaper price, doesn't mean that its actually cheap in contrast to rest of the world.

    Bmw 520D

The XF by far the best looking out of all the cars that are offered for the permit!!! given a choice I wouldn't go for that, considering that you paid 2.2mil + as agents fee's I'm not sure what they are offering lot more than others (eg. A6) except for the looks. Also worth knowing that some Indian guy would find a way to tell you that its an Indian car!!! that you can't deny and thats one of the main reason that I would go for it. BMW is choice for many, and by no means a bad car, its got a fabulous engine to start with, looks businessy, and drives like a sports car, but when considering looks, and gadgets included I think the A6 that is offered for the permit is ahead. Recently saw the 2013 Freelander offered for $25,000 so should be cheaper!!
  6. Want to clarify a small issue here. I understand that most people in Sri Lanka don't think that they need to change disk rotors. Usually what people here do is they wait until there disk is fully worn out or they stay till the disk is uneven to get it faced (resurfaced). If completely worn out they buy second hand ones. I know for a fact that many people in Europe change disc rotors every time they change pads or at least change every other time. However this could be a reason that they use heavy braking, specially on highways, as braking while speeding wears the pads much more. Even in Malaysia, Indonesia too people change disk rotors at least every 3rd time they change the pads. Braking in a vehicle is the one of them most important things, and one that there could not be any chances taken. So my question is, why Sri Lankan's don't change disk rotors more often? hence the reason why spare parts shops newer stock them.
  7. There will be a huge issue in braking a high speed, would cause a car to go out of control, did an unlawful thing, as I recently drove a car over 200 km/h, on the southern highway and on a small bend wanting to slow down the stepped on the brake a little and I felt it was a bit out of control so I took the foot of the accelerator and took the bend, which worked out better, but some people would try to slam the brake, and thats when all goes wrong. Most of the owners of indian and Jap cars use asbestos (Worse) or asbestos free brake pads, as the give out less dust, but they are useless at high speeds and for that reason they are banned in Europe.
  8. Montero sport is not a bad vehicle, many people who complain about it newer driven it for a decent distance. But if you have a large family and goes regularly on road trips and want a SUV that won't cost you a arm and a leg for repairs. Montero sport is the best bet in the market right now, that is only if you import it on a permit.
  9. Koito and Hella are two other good brands.
  10. FBL are probably the only ones that are genuinely Japanese, other is MK (blue box) which is both Indonesian and Japanese and the Japanese ones are at a similar price to the FBL and says made in Japan in both the box and the brake pad. JFBK used to be from Japan, but not sure if they are any more, and there are many duplicates. FBK used to be alright, its always been a cheap alternative but I have herd that there are some duplicates in this as well. Buy from a reputed dealer, and always try to look at the box and the pad for "made in Japan", however still you need to be careful of the duplicates.
  11. looks like a LHD.
  12. Range Rover Vogue is longer, taller and wider than the Land Cruiser V8. also statistically more cable off roader than the Land Cruiser.
  13. The best Agents in order that I have experienced specially after sales- Se*nok (Subaru) D*mo (Mercs), IW* (Porsche + Jags), Front*re (Land Rover) Prest*ge (BMW non permit), Toyota Lanka...

    Tyre Prices

anyone knows where i can find 4 255*50*R20, not available with any of the tire agents.
  15. Hella wiper blades that I have used are graphite coated, so they are very good. You can find them in Motorc*de "Braybrook Place". They are the agents for Hella wipers in SL. The best after market wiper blade in the market would be the NWB designer wiper blade (frameless for some) which is made in Japan. but its the most expensive of the lot.
  16. some background into those wiper blade manufacturers discussed here. Wurth - they don't have factories (they are a trading house) and they buy from suppliers world wide, however they only tend to source good quality items. Bosch - Ones you get in Europe tend to be made in Europe, but ones that we get are made by Unipoint Wiper blade (subsidiary of Bosch) in China. NWB - OEM to almost all Jap cars, you get both "made in Malaysia" as well "Made In Japan" latter been very good and equivalent to OEM and other been cheap and bad. Hella - Even though extremely popular for lighting and cooling systems, only recently started to manufacture wiper blades. and the quality tend to be better than bosch.
  17. It could be that your gearbox oil is overheated, this is caused due to a few reasons, but most commonly due to the Radiator Failure and bad gearbox oil.
  18. yeah its not ever going to be the original, and if there is one, I don't think I can afford as it sells for more than the new 911. but hey, Paul Walker uses a Replica Porsche 356 in Takers, and that car looks awesome!
  19. Porsche 356 Speedster if you can ever find one, even still have the money to buy it and restore it. If not take a VW beetle and make it into a Porsche 356 Speedster, cos its based on the Beetle, so wouldn't be a huge problem. I really want to do this project but don't have the time.
  20. mate better go with some camping equipment, cos I'm sure that all the hotels will be full, and if you do find one it will be a ridiculous price.
  21. Well look closer, and you will find some other reasons that the Hybrid Porsche suits us more than the V6 or the V8 porsche. All the porsche's except for the Hybrid needs a minimum of 98 octane petrol. So where in Sri Lanka are you going to find that unless your going to put an octane booster costing 1300 very day for your daily drive plus even if you did it still would ruin the engine pretty fast. The Hybrid Porsche's on the other hand only need 95 octane with a minimum of 91 octane which is available here. at the end of the day Porsche is a Porsche, they are the best sports car manufacture in the world that has proven it self over and over again whether its a hybrid a V8 twin Turbo they still are better than the competition, definitely not in the looks but in performance and reliability... Also again the prices advertised on the newspapers are the basic one without VAT! add VAT and see what you get, and most of the must have options are 1 mil ++ each..
  22. what compares with the Ferrari 458 is the 911 Turbo S, and Ferrari 458 is not the cheapest Ferrari...
  23. No they don't, have u driven either the Panamera or the Cayenne, if so you will know that its will not give you more than 6 kmpl, but due to the hybrid, it will however give you 380ps and 580nm, which is enough to take down most of the Civic Type R's and to keep up with the Sti's on long stretches... and then after all that it handles like a proper Porsche.
  24. Porsche is not a gardeners car in Germany unless he is earning in 7 figures.. its the best car to come out of Germany.. and Porsche own the VW group, which owns has 100% ownership of Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti, SEAT, Skoda, etc. And porsche 911 is rated as the best Sports car in the world by many experts incl Top Gear. and to be better than the Ferrari. You see so many Porsches (more than Ferrari's or Lambo's) on the roads because they so well built and don't break down like their competitors. and thats why Porsche is a profit making, and the largest sport car manufacturer in the world.
  25. How wrong could you be, the Porsche Cayenne or Panamera are both with decent specs are costing around lkr 22-30 million, and thats more than the V6 Cayenne after the 300% tax or both the Boxter and the Cayman and only a bit cheaper than the new 991 911 carrera priced at around 30-35 million. so in your sense who is a true Porsche owner? cos the prices for the Hybrids aren't lower. Also have to note that the BMW 520i is 15mil and the Hybrid 5 series is around 18mil at prestige.
