There was a special permit about an year ago, where if you deposit an equivalent of $200,000 in a government bond for a certain period you get a duty free permit with a $18,000 cap. I'm not sure whether it was 100% duty free or whether only a concession was given, the final price was close to what the Gov. servants permits were. I have a relative who got down a diesel Montero sport under this scheme. It is a 5year non-transferable permit. These permit were given when the foreign reserves were running low, not sure if still applicable today.

No matter what luxury the Jap brands offers, they will never be able to create brand equity like the Mercedes. They might be able to capture a market of brand loyal Nissan owners upgrading to a luxury brand - but I doubt they will eat into the market of Mercedes. Mercedes has a status that's unrivaled around the world.

CIF price of 1.6 million is the depreciation in the UK. I'm guessing the CIF for a 2007 C-Class would have been atleast US$25,000 when brand new. According to the depreciation table given by SL Customs (refer: http://www.customs.gov.lk/mv/mvpg02.pdf) the CIF price now would be US$19,250 (77%). I believe the excise duty will be calculated as $19,250 *150% (not on the actual price you paid - 9,500 sterling). Then there's also other tax components - VAT, Port levies, environmental taxes etc etc... I'm thinking the price will be close to 6Mil landed - still not bad considering what they used to cost...

What about a same spec Dell or HP? Acer is priced comparatively lower in the US.

Dell is doing pretty well infact - http://money.cnn.com/2010/05/20/technology/Dell/index.htm. The gain is mostly from the business systems, but consumer sales business is up by 16% as well. I don't think its anything to do with it being a specific model or brand or the processor for that matter. Here in the US, most Dell and HP laptops comes loaded with 'bloatware' or trial versions of many third party programs and other Dell or HP specific apps. These trial versions are a method of advertising, and helps keep the laptop prices down by offsetting part of the cost to third party companies to include their software on the laptops. I always clean up a laptop as soon as I buy it and get rid of any programs I don't need, or else simply removing them from the start up routine. Just look and the number of icons indicating the TSRs on a newly bought laptop....
