Things are wll here. Everybod is in a frenzy in SA. At least the petrolheads that is, after the news broke that two GTRs have been imported into the country. We are yet to find them though. Nissan SA is keeping hush over when they will officially import them into the country. In the meantime Subaru SA officially launched the WRX STi a few months ago, with the EVO-X expected in the next two months or so. Grey imports have been pouring in though. Had the chance a few weeks ago to drive a Ford Focus ST. Ford's answer to the WRX and the EVO. Though not a Ford fan, very impressive I must admit. AutoBotswana has been listed as a motor press agent with the "South African Motor Manufacturers and Importers press agency". With this we are now receiving news updates alomst on a daily basis. So once MADZ is back from leave we will start posting relavent articles on AL also. Cheers guys

Just when I was having fun reading about the TATA deal, you guys had to spoil my appetite by mentioning the B name
-
Yeah you are right KLM. Feel sorry for the privateers who spend hard earned money getting to the race. We had a guy from here who practiced for over two years, and organised several fund raising events to collect enough funds to enter the race in his quad (ATV). Poor guy! The Southern African countries have been talking of starting their own equivalent to the Dakar. This might be a great opportunity for us

Can't speak for others that posted here, but on my part the reason for my starting this thread was (1) to see the mix of replies, and (2) my personal admiration for what the Indians have done over the past decade or so. From every aspect India and China will be the next power houses and the US will be mere by standers. Expect to see lot more Indian and Chinese automotive products in the coming decades. Don't forget Ferrari cars are powered by TATA software.

Sad scene......The Dakar has been cancelled!!

Seems Ford is getting rid of Jaguar and Land Rover.... .....and the likely buyer is TATA!!

Thanks guys. Yeh I too miss AL. I should make it a point to spend more time in AL this year.

Hi everyone Been a while since I came here. Got to drive around in a new generation Impreza yesterday. In our market we get a choice of 15, 2.0, WRX and STi. I found the 2.0 to be under powered whilst the WRX lived up to expectations. But what really disspointed me was the looks, hatch back and poor boot space. It is quite clear that Subaru is aiming at a different market segment. This segment is dominated by Golfs, Audi A3, BMW3 in our market. Considering this, I wonder how the scoobie is going to fair. visit www.autobotswana.com to read our first impression. Cheers

What's your take on what Alonso did to Hamilton??

Top Gear's African stunt slated 09/07/2007 11:34 London - Jeremy Clarkson's already infamously skeptical take on all things green may have gone bit too far this time. From hair raising stunts to high speed crashes, Top Gear's presenters have always been at the forefront of crazy car antics. Though their recent gear head actions while filming their new series have been seemingly at the expense of mother nature. According to TheTelegraph, Jeremy Clarkson has been accused of 'driving all over the place' and damaging the landscape in Makgadikgadi salt pans in Botswana. The BBC rushed to the defense of Top Gear stating that it had been guided by environmental experts and said that no permanent damage had been caused by the team. A tour guide told The Sunday Telegraph that Clarkson's team had been seen driving a way that would damage the environment but said they simply brushed his warnings aside. "They said they were making a big film for the BBC and ignored me," said the guide. "They had quad bikes and three cars and they were driving all over the place, making marks on the salt pans," the guide added, reports TheTelegraph. Trashing the landscape Conservationists say that only quad bikes should be driven across the fragile pans and only in single file, but comment that Clarkson and his team raced all over the place, leaving tracks that would last for decades. Mary Rice, the head of campaigns at the Environmental Investigation Agency, says that Top Gear only cares about filming their series even if they end up trashing the landscape. "It's spending a fortune, for example, clearing its schedules to promote Live Earth and save the environment but at the same time it's sending people down potentially to trash one of the last pristine - wildernesses on Earth with a fleet of motor vehicles, all for the sake of a good picture. This is a big boy's own adventure," she said. The BBC has denied any wrong doing and a spokesperson says that if there had been any harm done to the countryside the first rains would "wash away" the eviden... um, damage.

here we go again!!!....LR up for sale one more time.

Pickups and SUVs. All built to spec by the factories. Privateers also buy from the local factories. SP (Super Production) Class is the top end. Costs around USD300,000 to buy one. Gear box costs around USD 50,000 a piece, and some of these teams (including the privateers) run three boxes a race weekend. One for quali, one for day 1 and another for day 2. Then a new set for the next race. UNREAL!!

Hey thats a gorgeous looking bug. Try colour coding the rims and then putting on a set of white walls. Good Job! Cheers

You will find this interesting. Some of you hardcore off-roaders might even know this already. Spring a radiator leak......use EGG WHITE!! "If you spring a radiator leak, throw egg white into the radiator (the yellow just makes a mess), the egg white will travel through the system and when it gets to the hole, it will clog the hole. The albumin (spelling?) goes very hard, almost like resin. It is a great emergency repair solution. Most people camping, will have eggs with them. I am certain you would have to flush the radiator after pulling such a stunt, if you wanted to keep the radiator". From a autoBotswana member who had to resort to this when his radiator developed a leak in the middle of no where. Cheers

Hi guys Been a long time since I posted on AL. Most of my time these days are taken up looking after the sister site -AutoBotswana. However, I do now and then check out AL and keep up to date with whats going on in your neck of the woods Glad to see lots of activity in the SL motoring scene. In case any of you are interested, we just had the TOYOTA 1000 KALAHARI BOTSWANA DESERT RACE which was held over 15,16 & 17 June. A total didtance of 1000km of off-road racing was held. Production vehicles, purpose built vehicles, bikes and quads made up the 350+ entries that started the race. However, due it's toughness on both man and machine only less than 1/2 finished on Sunday. Amongst the factory works teams, the fight was between Toyota and Nissan. Nissan has won this race 5 years running and Toyota was determined to win their own race and get some pride back. Having qualified in pole, Toyota lead the race upuntil 45km before the finish, when disaster struck handing the win over to Nissan. 6 Years in a row win in one of the top 10 toughest off-road races in the world, Nissan has the bragging rights this year. On the purpose built vehicle front the fight was as tense. These monstors sporting V8, 5000+cc engines, churning our in excess of 550HP, it was quite a sight to see them do 200km+ through rough terrain. With this race become ever popular each year, the Govt. has now given us the go-ahead to turn it into a DAKAR rival. So we are now working on a 5 year plan to achieve this. For articles on this race, visit www.autobotswana.com home page or the gallery for pictures. Cheers guys!!

My advice the same.

Just curious. Are people picky about having their number plates displayed?

I have always been saying it, and I will say it now.... There is a huge potential for this sport in SL and the level of enthusiasm and talent evident in the country is more than just encouraging. I was quite dissapointed that no one put any real effort to take the sport to another level. But with the starting of the AL championship, I am sure we will be able to see young talent exposed and given the opportunity to excel. All the best guys!!

NOW WE ARE TALKING!!!! I have waited a long time to see this. A AutoLanka organised Drag series will be awsome!! All the best guys/gals!!!
