wonder what the issue is this time? looks like out leaders are right royally screwing things up these days...

if your oil change is at 5k mark, you should ideally change the oil filter at that mark too. some change at 3k and change the filter too at 3k. diesel engine oil tends to get mucked up very fast and given the fact the motor is running far higher compression than a petrol...it's always advisable to change the oil filter with oil changes. Short answer is...yes...you gotta change the oil filter at 5k. cheap insurance. As for the diff oil, i'd change that too. pretty easy and cheap to do too.

on startup even properly clearance adjusted engines too tick a bit machang. nothing to worry. usually that ticking will reduce and go away once the motor is warmed up. Clearances are set with heat expansion too in mind i believe. What you should clearly differentiate is valve ticking aka tappet noise from worn out timing chain slapping. XR's are interference engines and a busted timing chain and high revs wont be good.- 139 replies

are your fan belt in good shape? inspect them to see if the tension is proper and the belt itself is not damaged. Check for play in pulleys as well while you're at it. this should be your starting point imho!

that must be something to do with riding technique... i've kept up with supermotard XR's on our long range trips even with stand all terrain tyres. The rear tyre would loose grip in high speed cornering but if you're used to riding in dirt tracks, it's not too hard to control.- 139 replies

i've done over 1000km on my xr in like 5days. went around the island hugging the coastline.... i wouldn't say it was "comfy" cos the roads weren't really "roads" If it was completely on tarmac i'd say it would be quite comfy. boring but comfy!- 139 replies

Ripper replied to Watchman's question in Car Buying Information
the problem is..simply due to the age of these bikes...the engine would've been rebuilt, shock refilled and what not... Not everybody use quality parts in rebuilds. I remember when i rebuil my mtx200r, one brand of piston could be bought for less than 2000 bucks while the geuine honda one was 8k A good XL 250, miantained well wont come cheap- 139 replies

i would guess the prices start from 150 and up...the lower end would obviously be the older models and the newer ones go upto around 650. but for about 200 - 250 you should be able to get a decent used bike. not really a new model one but with xr's, as long as they've not been abused...age doesn't really matter that much- 139 replies

it'll be very hard to get an XL250 in good nick. possibly a 125 but 250's in decent shape are very rare. And owners wont part with a good specimen anyways. especially the 250r- 139 replies

hmm.... this wasn't there at your place yeah? can't remember seeing a rolls...or maybe we had too much of beer
-
that's very dissappointing. looks like even in the documentary "sri lanka" gets mentioned very little, if at all Lost a thadi slab of respect for Mr. Clarke after this

the service stations around my area use a degreaser and they refer to it as pentra oil. no idea what the hell it is but it smells pretty strong... not too sure if that stuff is good for rubber bits... If there is good degreaser available for a decent price...i too would ditch diesel and switch diesel is messy and if you're spraying it, it tends to get around all over the place. you'd have to do a full wash afterwards.
-
there can be tiny leaks from hoses or from the radiator itself. if you're not using coolant, residue from such leaks would be even harder to spot. if what others have said doesn't checkout...pop the hood up when the engine is running and the motor is hot and visually inspect to see if you can see steam leaks. one of the great things of using coolant is the ability to spot leaks a lot better.... even when the leaks are small.
-
i think diesel evaporates quite slowly... also....what i forgot to mention was using a bit of car wash foam on things non-electric and electronic to completely take away the diesel. compressed air does a pretty good job but if you wanna ensure diesel is out, using car wash works... i do this sorta clean up only once a month so spending on that extra few cans of beer and bit more time on the detailing job is quite ok
-
that's the biggest problem with idiots unfortunately!
-
1+ for diesel... i clean with compressed air first, then spray diesel...let it sit for a bit and use compressed air again to get rid of excessive diesel.

I got tnavi...The main man there used to work for Sala and over some dispute, left that place and started Tnavi From what i've been told, Tnavi offers a far superior product compared to Sala cos afaik Sala maps really arent updated or have POI's marked on them. For instance... even wine stores and pubs and stuff are marked on the tnavi map which can be quite helpful. Needless to say fuel sheds, hospitals etc etc too are on the map The live update thing is only to update traffic conditions. From my understanding, it only works if other tnavi users too are stuck in traffic. basically ur speed info is sent back to tnavi chaps over gprs/3g...they collate that info and see where slow moving traffic is and send that info to all tnavi users. I dont use this feature cos i really dont need it... So dunno how good or bad it is... You should possibly visit their shops and try out both and see what works best for you.
