She's just doing it for the tui-tuti- tuiti-tuitioooooooon fee!

Lol! @ above ?....Toyota Supra, but why is she resting her weight on her hands like that I wonder? Is she helping fixing it? But then why is she looking off to the right? Hmm she must be a really good mechanic to be able to fix it without even looking...Interesting ? * I'm joking. @Hyaenidae impressive knowledge on many levels. @matroska: Best quiz ever! (Also I totally see what @Hyaenidae did there. Clearly his win...)

lol! Our friend @kmeeg wants to make sure he keeps the flag flying in any wind conditions imaginable! Be prepared and ready for anything and all...What a boy scout! *insert your favorite stiffy in a jiffy joke here* Although interestingly I see an increasing number of Wranglers being purchased in SL too these days...Do they not test drive them first ? ? *My apologies in advance to @kmeeg ! I'm just joking buddy...Wranglers are nice. I like how they are totally committed to off-roading. Nice to see in today's marketplace where everything seems to be getting diluted down towards the median soccer mom style CUV soft roader.

Oh the Camry is #1 in that segment is it? Wow. I for some reason thought the Nissan Teana outsold the Camry in that segment based on something I read somewhere, but I can't be certain- but thank you for the soft toss to Nissan on that one... Fair enough. Oh is it? I always considered the Nissan 307Z, GT86/BRZ and the Mazda Miata/ MX-5 were all the 'affordable' sports car category... Might be less for Nissan as I gave it a win for the small commuter car (Corolla segment) so if its a draw there, we should take that point away from Nissan or give Toyota one point for that too...? So either Nissan 2, Toyota 9 or Nissan 3, Toyota 10..But yeah no disagreement about the overall results: Toyota pretty much slam-dunked it. Well I don't know, I mean fingers crossed and all as a fan of the brand and an overall Jap car person, but Nissan will have to be extremely strategic if they are to be competitive again. This is probably not going to make me popular: But I think the current Z was a waste. Not because I am personally not that impressed by it, but because despite catering to enthusiasts that segment doesn't make a lot of money. Even if they came out with something absolutely stunning, they wouldn't really make that much money off it will they? They should have just face-lifted it (maybe also changed the monochromatic dials out) and focused those resources on a more important revenue generating segment. I'm not sure whether they should focus on the entry-level electric car market (that seems to be the future) or whether they should go all out for the small SUV / CUV segment (the current hot segment) but I do know that they need to make some decent sales to stay viable...

Yeap. You hit the nail on the head- Apparently that's exactly who they designed it for and apparently that's where 80-90% of all Patrols sold worldwide end up. (Also explains why the interior has gotten so fancy and upscale making it very pricey when everything is tallied up).
-
Oh sorry I totally forgot the LC70! And sorry, I forgot we were considering rear suspension as well. My bad. I just considered IFS when replying- which is weird as its one of the reasons I think the Nissan Patrol is better than the LC200 for road / soft off-road use! (The Patrol has IFS & IRS) I stand corrected! Thanks @kmeeg

Alright, As your answer is very detailed / informative I'll respect that, and provide responses (although I totally agree with you- Nissan HAS lost their footing and its tough offering up a better Nissan alternative to a Toyota in any category other that the Landcrusier...) I would say as a plain-Jane commuter car (sorry Corolla fans it is, what it is) the Syplhy wins that one I think. The interior is a tad nicer and the exterior is a lot better. Value for moneywise as well, I think the Syplhy makes sense - Which is why I had one for a while. (Civic and Mazda3 are a lot closer matched and I think either choice is a better alternative, but as its a Toyota vs Nissan thing, I think Nissan wins that round? Fair? Nissan 1, Toyota 0. Agreed the Skyline (Infinity G35, G37) is a nice second option but at a the end of the day I think its all Toyota in this (sporty sedan / executive sedan) category the Mark X, Lexus IS, Crown and I add the Lexus GS, are all super nice vehicles. And no way Nissan can win against that crowd. Win for Toyota. Nissan 1, Toyota 1 (I'll leave aside the non-Toyota's as it makes it tougher when you throw the Mazda 6 and Accord in as the Teana can't compete...) This is a tough one. I've owned 3 generations of the Teana and as far as commuter cars go: I feel the suspension and interior of the Teana is better than the Camry. The new Camry has a great exterior and I haven't had the chance to check either that or the new Teana out in person yet, so if I leave both those out, and just go on the previous generations: I think the Teana wins with regards to ride comfort as well as interior layout and design. Exterior wise I prefer the Teana, but its debatable, lots of people hate how it looks so its tough to give it a win, but the old Camry's were so bland its inconclusive there too. The Camry wins on durability clearly (thanks to Nissan's crap transmission), but overall this one is a win in my opinion for the Teana. Maybe a tie if you want to be picky as, at the end of the day, durability is king. (A nice broken car is still a broken car...) But as Nissan is the underdog, and since I've some expertise in this category, lets say its a win for the Nissan... Then so far Nissan 2, Toyota 1 So again its RAV4 vs X Trial. No debate there. The X Trail is a decent option but RAV4 wins. Nissan 2, Toyota 2 I personally like the looks of the new Hiace, but as the new Caravan isn't half bad, and if you disregard my personal bias, based on your thoughts above: Win to Nissan? So Nissan 3, Toyota 2 Agreed. No competition from Nissan there in that segment. Nissan vs Toyota the Vitz/Yaris/Aqua has it. Nissan 3, Toyota 3 Not a whole lot of personal experience in this segment, but your answer says Nissan, so: Nissan 4, Toyota 3 Sigh. I'd love to give this to the GTR, but I differed to your expertise above and I'm a fan of the new Supra as much as anyone else (although I'm not sure the new Supra is in the same league as the GTR performance wise) so I guess Toyota on this one. Nissan 4, Toyota 4 Yes absolutely. The Skyline coupe is almost plebeian compared to the offerings from Toyota. Nissan 4, Toyota 5 Well the Z? as in the 350Z, 370Z ? I unfortunately haven't had a lot of exposure to the GT86. The reviews on it say its excellent and exactly what a sports car should be. While my experience with the 350Z is also somewhat limited, other than on exterior looks I don't think it would win out against the GT86 (exterior-wise 370Z vs GT86 - I think the Nissan wins) so Toyota wins here too? Nissan 4, Toyota 6 Well even though I passed over the Nissan when shopping in this category; personally I still feel the Patrol is better than the Land Crusier due to the engine options and the front and rear suspension layout. ( for road use as well as soft off-road use.) For strictly road use the new Pathfinder is really nice and the interior is laid out really well *but it has a CVT so a let down there. I think if it had a better transmission it would give the Toyota Prado a good run for its money. However personal opinions aside if I were to look towards worldwide vehicle sales its clear the Toyota LC and the Prado have a solid win in this segment too. Nissan 4, Toyota 7 So Nissan Kicks vs Yaris Cross...hmm not sure of the Nissan Kicks. It does look really decent and it is priced really well, so a strong contender. But exterior and interior-wise I think the Yaris Cross has the slight edge, so Nissan 4, Toyota 7 New Teana vs New Camry- The older ones were roped into the upscale commuter category above and Nissan won it. But strictly looking at the new models I think the new Camry looks really exciting and since even I didn't consider the new Teana and crossed over to the opposition (reliability is king) : Toyota wins this one. Nissan 4, Toyota 8 Final count: Nissan 4, Toyota 8...So the winner-Well, why of course the NISSAN PATROL !
-
Hooly! Wow. I didn't expect that reply. In fact I was going to be silly and just answer "Nissan Patrol" to anything anyone said as all I said boils down to roughly: Name a Toyota vehicle and I'll name a better Nissan one... So technically it would be a win! (I mean SL is now pretty much a one-man-show country right, so why not just Nissan Patrol everything for the win...!!)
-
Yes the new Patrol is has independent suspension front and rear. And yes, no none of the Nissans have solid axles now. In fact as far as I know no Japanese vehicle has solid axles any more...
-
@iRageWhat do you mean until the mid-80's? Toyota is STILL playing catchup! Name a Toyota model and I promise you, I'll name a better Nissan offering... Open to all really: Toyota fans? Tell me your favorite model from the current Toyota or Lexus lineup and I'll provide you with the better Nissan alternative.
-
No way?! Wow. Great info @iRage: Will have to read up on this...

Just looked it up on wiki: Wow. I didn't know the Patrol got its start in life as a Willy's Jeep rip off! Interesting point to consider when we make fun of cars like the Landwind X7 etc...Anyways coming back to that 2nd Gen Nissan Patrol: Those must be super rare here right?

Sounds like you know your women and cars well: A winning combination!! ? Right you are Sir! It is indeed a Jaguar XF ! (2011/2012 I believe) Take it away @iRage! You have the floor...

It looks like a HA11 Suzuki Alto, but that those fog lights are a bit off...what did the Chinese start ripping off Suzuki Kei cars as well now? Edit: Okay, maybe its a Mazda Laputa then? Cool name either way: 'Laputa' sounds very familiar...

Interesting: I feel your HID low beam in the projector housing are what gives you most of your distance viewing. But I have no way of proving that. Infact this picture is contrary to that hypothesis...? because you are clearly seeing further down the road with the hi-beam. Therotically LED bulbs in reflector headlights while seeming brighter shouldn't help you see further down the road as the reflector housings are known to scatter light from LED bulbs rather than focus them forward...Although as mentioned, looking at the picture above I can clearly see the hi-beam lights are focusing slightly further down the road than the low beams are... So this debunks that theory then?! Or I wonder if you had a pair or LED headlights with a projector lens whether you'd be able to see even further down the road??
-
I partially agree with @kmeeg LED or HID is the way to go BUT if you're going with LED or HID headlights you'll need to upgrade to reflector style headlights otherwise its useless. If you just use LED bulbs in a reflector style housing the light won't be projected properly via the reflector style headlights and will scatter. Not only will that not be effective to drive with (you won't be able to see far ahead) but it will also annoy oncoming drivers and they will be constantly flashing at you. Perhaps @kmeeg was referring to the LED bulbs that have built in projector lenses on the front. And if you are buying those then, that's fine. You can use those in a reflector style housing no problem (they are a bit more expensive though). So to summarize: 1. If you are getting LED or HID lights you have to upgrade the whole headlight assembly to projector style lights like this: https://www.morimotohid.com/morimoto-toyota-round-xb-led-fog-lights?quantity=1 (That particular assembly is for fog lights but I'm sure you get the idea...Morimoto is a brand I've used before. I used a HID kit for about 5-6 years on my Nissan with no problems and even got my ballast replaced under warranty from them. Pricey, compared to other options available but good) 2. You'll have to get LED headlight bulbs with the reflector built into the bulb assembly

Buying a car at a time when prices are artificially inflated

Also for the record that's not true, they are already considering lifting some import bans / easing some import bans as it's not sustainable, not in the long run. Import restrictions are a stop-gap measure and only work in the short term. If implemented for too long, inflation will sky rocket and our economy will weaken / become unsustainable rather than stronger. (We are already seeing signs of it now...) And best of all, you don't have to take my word for it as there are lots of case studies done on it...Google it up, case studies on the Cuban economy are a good place to start...? -

Aiyo no need to get all upset now: This is the nature of Autolanka, this is almost how we introduce ourselves. No need to get all upset and take it personally... Stick around. It'd be sad to see you go. And no I don't say this purely out of self interest ( its true - I enjoy a good scrap, when peeps dust off their keyboards and let fly at each other with all they have, it keeps things interesting- yes I'm sick, I know, but I digress...I say stick around because variety is the spice of life, and our differences are the strength of this forum. We are here to learn and share opinions with each other, and the more diverse they are the better: No point in hearing the same things over and over is there? New thoughts and ideas add richness to the discussion. You speak of growing vegetables, well I don't believe we have had a person who commercially grows vegetables for a living here before. It would be interesting to hear your perspective further.... I understand you are upset, things were said, you said this, they said this...shit happens. Its a forum, it's how things are... At the end of the day everyone's sitting at laptop yakking about cars and that is a good thing. So take it easy...Eat one of those roti's you were bragging about, and stick around awhile. Who knows- you might end up liking it? -
Yes absolutely! 4 mil gets you a decent a on-road / soft off roader type vehicle, including an older Harrier, LC or a very decent Forester XT which would be what I would consider...

A lovely sight to wake-up to!

I live at the bottom of a hill too. I usually start my car and give it 10-15 sec while I put my phone away etc before driving off and generally take it easy in the first 10 minutes or so of driving till I see the needle hit the center of the temp guage. Has always worked out okay for me and I drive a SUV with a petrol turbo engine in it as well (for the past 4-5 yrs) with zero issues. Shouldn't be a dig deal at all...

This is what I do as well. If I can - I go easy on the car after I crank it up, but on modern cars 10-15 sec's of warm-up is sufficient to get all the parts lubricated...so no need to stress over it too much. As for Turbo's: I've had a Turbo diesel and 2 vehicles with Petrol turbo engines for some years now and I've never idled the engine before shutting it off although I have heard this is what you need to do (apparently idling it allows the oil to circulate and cool down the turbos etc). But I have never done it. Been driving these Turbo's (one car, two SUV's) for a combined total of around 5-6yrs now and I've probably put on over 100k on the vehicles when you add all the mileage up over the years and have h̶a̶d̶ Z̶e̶r̶o̶ i̶s̶s̶u̶e̶s̶. had zero issues on the petrol engines. So I wouldn't fuss too much about that either... *edit1: Just realized I've been using fully synthetic fuel in these vehicles and I understand that synthetic oil has a higer tolerance and protects the turbo against the ill-effects of over heating much better than regular oil. **edit2: Also forgot I had to do a repair on the diesel's turbo seals a year or two ago which is caused by the turbo charger over-heating and melting the silicone seals. Not sure if this is caused by not cooling it down (idling for 30-60 secs after driving) or by just driving it hard like a maniac (guilty!) and reving the crap out of it trying to keep up with friends who have faster cars...
