  1. thats what we need in sl. a 200 bhp td5. would you care for an engine swap devinda?
  2. i'm not suggesting its technically possible but what if we turn out boring 4 pots to have one cylinder that acts as a supercharger? maybe it will sound like a maruti
  3. i'm starting to find clarksons new dvds a bit boring myself. i wish he'd feature more old cars and ones that are rare or very interesting. not the run of the mill ferraris jags and porsches that the whole world drools over.
  4. if they graft a normal 4 stroke engine to the rx it wont be an rx anymore. it'll be more like a capella the reason why they keep their engines at just 1.3 is because according to japanese classing the 1.3 is considered 2.0 (1.5*1.3) which keeps it safe from big engine taxes.
  5. once a leading businessman in sri lanka said no matter how well a person does a job never give him full credit for it. always show them there's room for improvement. cos they'll get better and better. imho this is what lasantha wickramatunga did during his whole career. showed the public the flaws of every government. and what those governments should have done is close doors on corruption wherever possible. as to escape his accusations. not consider him as a threat and try to eliminate him. i'm not accusing anybody. but thanks to someone the sri lankan political scene just lost its biggest critic. sorry to change the subject. but i heard a few rumours that slaf has attacked some ltte hideout which was believed to shelter prabakaran. people say the ltte's radio communications at the moment are similar to what they sounded like when thamilselvan was killed. not sure if they meant sad or restless. but has anyone got any news on that?
  6. i saw that couple of years ago on an lro mag. any defenders running these engines in sl? anyways i've been more loyal to JE engineering. they can tune the 300tdi upto 132bhp as well. and they claim this knocks 3 seconds off the 0-60 times. a bit slower than the vgt equipped 2.8 i suppose. but whats really interesting is they offer tuning for the td5 engine for upto 195 bhp. and they claim to knock 7 seconds off the 0-60 times. seeing so much bulk shift so quickly must be epic. i'd love to try one.
  7. well yes, in plain english the ninety which was introduced 1983 had the so called 2.25 petrol option for couple of years. anyways while we are on the subject of defenders has anybody heard of the south africa only 2.8 version? http://rovering.squarespace.com/journal/20...fender-28i.html i dont know if i'm right in saying its the most powerful production defender. cos even the 3.9 offered only 182 bhp
  8. yes i understand mate! i can find out the truth behind the 5.0 defender i mentioned when i go to sl in summer cos my mate promised me a ride in it. but im still very intruiged by the white psd defender i saw with the special vehicles badge. i mean it was not a sticker. and they cant just go adding random cosmetic bits to their cars rite?
  9. looks like i've been had probably something he said to impress the annoying 16 year old school boy i was back then
  10. i could swear 20- was the series for petrol dual purpose vehicles. hope a reg expert could qoute on this. perhaps the reason you said that was cos most people have converted their 20- cars to run diesel engines and havent quite registered their cars yet please correct me if wrong.
  11. if you meant the defender wasnt actually called the "defender" when it possessed the 2.25 engine you are right when this model first came out in the 1983 it was offered with the engines from the series iii though i must say the v8 had a bit more oomph. i think this was the case until it was named the defender and thats when the discovery engines were made available.
  12. very interesting info mate! i think i'll have to agree with you about the v8s. i've never bothered check the originality of the v8s that i've heard of. and i've heard of those conversions done in sl. so i guess most of these armoured defenders are done in sl then. do you have any info on the original v8 defenders as in wut their YOMs are and whether they came with manual or auto boxes? im guessing the 3.9 came with an auto. btw i still stand strong on my opinion that the government does own sv badged defenders. im certain the government owned one i saw had the real badge and i think thats not the only one they own. there should be quite a few sv pampered defenders used for their high performance. or other such relative options.
  13. i've seen a 20- military/police defender running on the kandy road many times. thought it was a v8 at first but now i think its either a 2.25 or a 2.5
  14. i'm quite sure about that for 2 reasons. the vehicle in question carries a whole load of options that a civillian defender doesnt. and the rover v8 can be bored out well over 5.0l. i've seen 5.2s. i'll reconfirm it the next time im in sl. i've never quite bothered to figure out what sort of mechanical top speed the 300Tdi's got. perhaps devinda could calculate it for us. personally i dont agree with factory claimed top speeds on day to day cars. the actual top speeds are always higher. for instance the 300tdi has a factory top speed of 128. but im right there with gummybr on the top speed he claims. and i'm guessing its mechanical top speed is its actual top speed. i've seen quite a lot of stickered up special vehicles. but i have actually seen the real deal. the first one i saw owned by osanda. it was a 130 modified to treat wild animals or something here's the link for that http://www.bornfree.org.uk/who-we-work-wit...hip/land-rover/ the second one was a presidential security defender. i was lucky enough to get close to it as it wasnt on duty. i noticed the badge has turned black. possibly cos its been in use for quite a long time. i couldnt hear the engine not at that time but it could possibly be a v8. most people wouldnt believe it. but sri lanka is a proper meccha for defenders. we have cars that other nations havent even dreamt of. i hope you guys are with me on the fact that we have a quite a few armoured defenders. the most notable one i've seen upto now was a five door with no windows and only gun ports to shoot out of. probably the biggest reason we are unaware of their existance is because they are state secrets. i mean if you want the world to know your car is bullet proof you might as well turn up in a tank. i think someone with links to the military or the secret service should come and shed some more light on these facts. however the v8 are not that rare. if you look hard enough u can find one. as for the armoured s class i was referring to the w140. the engine i mentioned was the one from the s500. i just checked wiki and it says the power output is 315hp. so if the car weighs around 3 tonnes its got a power to weight ratio similar to that of a corolla. so we are probably looking at a 0-60 time of around 9-10 secs. the armoured cars we get in sl are "standard" production armoured cars with up to the b6 level of protection. they are not one offs like obama's car. so as you guys say they could probably have bigger or uprated engines, despite the smaller badge. the reason for my whole argument is when he's got such an extensively modified car why not get a bigger engine to haul that weight around really fast. now im starting to think if that was to fool the baddies. maybe the car does have quite a lot of power.
  15. maliths u got balls mate! i've heard way too many horror stories about people overtaking escorts. but i'll tell u one thing. those guys in the escorts sure know how to make progress. last summer i was merely keeping up with an escort using their traffic clearing ability to get me home faster. there was a few defenders a few s class mercs and a montero and police lead car which i like to believe was driven at full throttle. anyways i had to drive well over 3000 rpm to keep up with them. and corner quite vigouresly. anyways about the top speed of the defenders i was just stating my opinion. the 1st v8 series iii prototypes were capable of topspeeds of 92mph which is just shy of 150km/h. and this was with contemporary range rover engines. which had a power output of about 130bhp. though the production models were offered with a lowly 90bhp. well the top speed of the prototypes were probably helped by the fact they had the gearing from a range rover. and im not suggesting the defender is more aerodynamic than the stage 1 v8s. but if my sources are right, there are government owned defenders upto 5.0 in capacity. surely they would be producing a lot more than a measerly 130bhp. so they could definitely crack the ton. if not a little bit more
  16. it depends. most of them have the tdi engine (these organisations prefer the tdi over the td5) afaik these engines are on stock tune and the top speed is not limited unlike the new defender. people have driven them over 130 and the top speed is around 140. but i'm sure its a bit more faster some of them are built by land rover special vehicles. if you manage to overtake one on an escort u might notice the special vehicles badge between the front door and the front wheel well (before you get shot at or pushed off the road that is). these usually come with the rover v8 and their top speed could be literally anything. well over 160 in most cases. most of them have bullet proof bodywork. there's quite a lot more options really. but they are state secrets to give u taster, they are a lot more manouvarable than the standard defender. they can even do handbrake turns without falling over. my earlier argument was bulletproof cars arent really quick as their more vulnerable counterparts cos obama's limo takes 15 secs to hit 60 and i was guessing with about 3 and a bit tonnes to lug around our s500s wouldnt be very spritely. i mean if they have that stock 300 something horses thats around 10secs to 60. but if they do have modded engines like u guys say im sure our bigshots can sleep more soundly at night.

    Toyota Supra

there was a dark blue early popup headlamp celica on sale a few years back on the m*tormag. i might still have that issue at home. is this the model in question?
  18. i have to give you some credit srajendr. if all the new drivers come to us for advice we'll have more disciplined drivers here than they do in germany
  19. a few years back i saw on discovery channel that armoured cars are fitted with more powerful engines. but looking at the figures put out by obama's motor i'm starting to realise how the defenders are just as quick as any presidential merc s class we find here, on a really quick getaway. if the ltte ever attempted a Charles de Gaulle style presidential assasination they wouldn't have to look very far to find some cars that could catch up with the escort. terrorist spec maruti anyone?
  20. congratulations mate! hope to see the mini-ripper on the forum someday in the future!
  21. anythings too good for him right now. but i'm seeing his end at our boys' gunpoint. given the opportunity any proper sri lankan would kill him. but lets say by the slightest chance they decide to take him out alive, he'd have to go through it all over again as he's tried prisoned and finally executed.
  22. they are cowards! prabakaran is the biggest coward. he may have a cyanide capsule around his neck, and may also make his lower ranking members go with such a nasty method, trust me its going to be less painful getting shot. but the point is he's afraid of death. even karuna admits that. think of the man hiding in some underground bunker in the mulativu jungle, dreading what he did, literally his whole life flashing before him, awaiting certain death. i think that suffering alone is enough a payback for everything he's done.
  23. would they able to bring down performance parts on pre-order? i'm looking for a TRD turbo'd 1nz-fe engine with a manual gearbox. or at least the turbo kit with the ecu for a manual gearbox along with an actual manual gearbox.
  24. i think the idea is to hold the steering so both ur arms resemble the 10.10 position on a clock. i find it easier to do quick shifts when my seats in its rearmost position. that said its not the same with the steering wheel. u need to be far away yet close enough to do arm crossing manouvres.
