Anyone has any updated information on the E01 galle to matara section ? (RDA, Defense websites, etc seems to be not up to date). Thanks [Not sure if this is the correct topic on Expressway updates. Can't seem to find any other expressway update topic. There are some links but that gives an error. If this is the wrong topic appreciate if Mods do the needful.]

Yep the writing is only on the windscreen. Got rid of most of it with a lot of finger juice a while ago (my fingers still hurt while typing ), and got rid of the few remaining specs with a touch of kerosene. Thanks.

Not yet. Had used it before on a door panel to remove some stuff. Anyway on the bodywork, any adverse effect is more cosmetic and in the worst case, will result in damaged paint. Was worried of using it on the windscreen though, since any adverse effect may cause problems for driving. Could give it a try if it works for this paint stuff. Good to hear that. Which technique did you exactly use to remove the paint?. Kerosene ? Thanks.

How to clean marks (put by car sale) on a windscreen? The kind of marks am talking about are the various numbers and letters etc that car sale guys (or may be the shipping agent or who ever) write on windscreens with a paint or marker. Some of it had not been cleared properly and still visible. Tried water with a bit of rubbing, windscreen washer fluid, car shampoo. Above did not solve the problem (or I did not try hard enough). Found the following and similar ones in the forum, but they do not address the exact problem. (I you remember there was a discussion, and also remember the post, appreciate if you point it out. My search missed such). http://forum.autolanka.com/topic/11645-blured-car-windscreen/?hl=%2Bclean+%2Bwindscreen#entry170615 http://forum.autolanka.com/topic/11629-dried-compound-on-windscreen/?hl=%2Bclean+%2Bwindscreen#entry170373 http://forum.autolanka.com/topic/11214-oily-film-on-windscreen/?hl=%2Bclean+%2Bwindscreen#entry162930 Someone suggested scraping off. But reluctant to use too much force or any method which may leave scratch marks on windscreen (not my car either ) or may damage any other surface of the car. What is the best way to remove this stuff from the windscreen please ? Thanks!

Thanks for the info and the ideas. Yes quite a few points to consider! Many thanks!

Any ideas on the maximum gradient I can have for a ramp for vehicles pls ? Let me explain the situation: Am making an additional vehicle entrance to the house. The ground is about 2 feet higher than the road. So either I have to lower the ground level in the area where the vehicle will come in, let me call it, parking area, or make ramp to, or do both. I need to allow most kinds of vehicles to use the ramp without hitting the underside and both front in and reverse should be possible. Well vehicles with higher ground clearance will have no issues, but need to allow for cars with low ground clearance and low front buffers too. If I need to lower the parking area, it should be a minimum due to various reasons (like pipes running under, which I will have to lower or re-route - a bit of a bother). This means the height of the ramp has to be the maximum possible. The length of the ramp has to be the minimum possible as I want the parking area to be flat, and I cannot extend the ramp into the road. Hope you got an idea of my requirement. I search around and got the recommended dimensions for the gradient for ramps to be about 1:10 for heights up to 1.5m. (for higher level differences it was 1:12 ugh). But this was for parking lots. The length of the parking area is about 15 feet. The length I would like to have for the ramp is about max 3 feet, 2 feet better. That is allowing for the gate pillars and also having the ramp over the drain that runs along the side of the road. If I have a gradient of 1:10, almost entire parking area would be a ramp. Not OK. A gradient of 1:10 looks quite shallow. I have seen entrances of houses with very steep ramps. But then perhaps only jeeps with high ground clearance might be going on them. A car might hit the underside while starting on the ramp or going over. (don't want to try and find out ). Some of you may wonder, if the recommendations in the web say 1:10, why ask. Well 1:10 or 1:12 as I said is for parking lots which might accommodate all possible vehicles including perhaps who knows - motorized wheel chairs and also to meet various standards and speed of travel etc and all of it may not be applicable to a local situation. Also if the level difference is low, the gradient could perhaps be steeper. For example, there is no ramp or gradient for a 4 - 6 inch high pavement and most vehicles will not have a problem going over it (if you don't mind the bump ). I could compromise and have a max gradient for the ramp with say a max ramp length of 3 feet (or preferably 2 feet), and to fit that max ramp height allowed, lower the parking area the minimum possible value. What kind of max gradient can you guys recommend for this situation ? Any links to a previous topic covering this (could not locate) or any other site with the required info, pls let me know. Thanks

Have a look: http://www.eneloop.info/eneloop-products/mobile-booster.html Saw something like this in a shop in L Plaza selling only eneloop stuff several months back. What they had at that time had a low current capacity and was just enough for one charge of my phone. I wanted to use it outstation in a place with no electricity, for a few days stay. As a single charge is not enough for my purpose, did not buy, so can not comment on the product. Saw something like what Peri mentions - Energizer, in arpico union some time back. Did not buy for same above reasons, so cannot comment. Did not see that at arpico in recent times. I do use both eneloop rechargeable NiMH bats plus charger and energizer bats plus charger. I prefer the eneloop charger since it shuts of charging when bat is fully charged - or supposed to do so :-), while the energizer one I have is time based so have to use a timer or remember to switch off. Other than that I have not used these long enough to comment further on the brand either. So far no issues.

thanks for the info

Thanks very much for all the info. Most cars I have seen, the seat belt mount point on the door pillar is height adjustable. My one, it is not Guess this will depend on the space available and max weight limit on the seat . Afaik weight limit spec is indicative of the force the harness can withstand in a crash. Please advice if incorrect. Aha seems a nice solution.

Thanks for the info. Sounds very interesting. Sorry I had missed your post. Found it when searching for something else. The info you were pointing to seems to be no longer available . If you know the brand and model name of the device could you please share it. (Of course some Chinese products don't have names )

What can be done if one is short (say less than 5') and when the seat belt is worn, rather than the belt going over the shoulder, it goes under the side of the chin and neck and sometimes touches the ear ? Is it OK to wear the belt like this or can even a slight jerk cause neck injury when the seat belt is worn as described above? Is the only solution to use a cushion to raise the height so that belt is over the shoulder? (btw, this is for adults. So not sure if booster cushions will be OK or if they are available in SL. So I guess it will be just a typical cushion) Any other practical solutions to above problem please ? (for e.g. is lowering seat belt fixing point on door pillar at a garage advisable ?, any special type of belt that can be used ?, I ask because some passengers are reluctant to use any type of cushion and prefer to opt out of seat belts - which is not safe)

FYI, found this : http://www.elakiri.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1120521 But still, until I get the guts to root, (or google is sympathetic to SL) please do let me know of any other app you have used

If you have used your Android phone for GPS maps / navigation, Could you please share the app names that you found useful for driving in Sri Lanka? I have tried Google Maps, Navit, GPS Compass map. Going to checkout OsmAnd, MapDroyd and Meverick when I get some time. Well there are many more apps in the Market. Could try out one by one. But if anyone has used and found it useful, it would save some effort for all interested For those who are interested, of what I have used: Google maps - everyone knows. Version I could update to in the market, 5.x something doesn't have navigation but map area download in labs is quite useful. Hope navigation will be available soon. GPS Compass map - simple app and has some map tile caching. But something with off line maps would be better. Navit - off line maps with open street maps and has voice navigation. UI for menus is not very good. Note: - Some apps even without navigation is ok at times one wants to just know where one is. Navigation is a plus. Offline maps, caching or map area download is definitely useful. - Please mention what you have actually used in Sri Lanka. There are apps with downloadable maps, but no maps for SL. Anyway most free apps use google maps or open street maps. - Yeah free is better thanks.

Forgot to mention the following things: - I wanted to transfer data between the GPS and a PC. They said in their system, it is not possible even for my own way points, tracks etc. Another reason why I gave up the idea. If you want such a facility, check if the system allows it now or a work around is available. - If public points of interest are very important for you, at the time I looked at it, it was offering more than other GPS systems I looked or Google maps. You will have to review how it is now.

Check to see if the map shown for the area you may use it has enough detail as "you" require. (of course one does not know all the places that one will go in the future ) Sometime back I checked it, but gave up the idea as the coverage of some out of colombo city areas I wanted was not enough for my requirement. (for others it may have been enough). Sala said they will periodically update the maps. So the maps may have more details now. Also see if you will be comfortable with the screen size you are planning to get, while driving, specially in traffic. (here voice navigation that is available in Sala prosat is useful). Yes the mount supplied (or some other mount) will allow you to fix the device at a convenient position, but there are practical limits. So good to consider the distance from your eyes (and how good your sight is ) to the unit, screen size and zoom levels that you may generally use. If you already have a phone with GPS and google maps for example, that can be an alternative. There are smart phone apps that can do some caching and even claim support voice navigation. Some apps allow off line maps - for e.g opens treet maps. (But open street map is not as detailed as google maps in some areas) At present am using google maps when needed. But I have not tried any voice navigation apps and yet to try some apps with off line maps.

Re: types of car alarm system, I remembered some things that may interest some of you. (Many would already know these) * In most alarm systems, when you unlock, all 4 doors get unlocked. If you like, try get a system with double unlock. First unlock button press, unlocks the driver door only. Second press, unlock the other 3 doors. I have seen this type of unlock system coming factory fitted in some cars that have central locking. In other cars, this functionality may have to be fabricated. I have seen such a feature in a car where this has been fabricated by using the boot release feature in some remote keys to unlock the other 3 doors while the first press only unlocks the driver door. Why would one want such a feature? Well if you have experienced a situation where you unlock your car and an unwelcome passenger gets in from the other side, you too may want. * If you have a hatch back type of car (or what ever that has a rare door that allows access into the inside of the car easily), and opening the rare door does not switch on some interior light (because most low end alarm systems I have seen will use the signal from the switch in each door post for the interior lights to trigger the alarm when a door opens), the chances are that anyone can open the rare door with a key and the alarm will not trigger. Some places that install alarms will install an additional switch that will get activated when the rare door is opened. I have seen some fitting a similar switch to the bonnet. * If your alarm comes with a shock sensor (most do), find out how to adjust the sensitivity your self. You would not want the alarm to go off when a car passes in the road or there is heavy thunder. * Explore the differences in normal lock and mute lock modes. Some alarms systems, when mute locked, will only flash the signal lights when the shock sensor is triggered up to a certain number of triggers. Other alarm systems behave differently and you need a separate lock sequence to make this happen.

Could you give more details of this car tracking system please. Any web link to the details ? Where did you buy from (in SL or US) ? thanks

Hi Where (in SL) could I find a phone holder (or some call it a phone cradle) that will have some shock absorbing / vibration reducing qualities and also allow easy positioning of the phone ? Kinda thing am referring to is similar to this: http://www.shopwiki.com/iPhone+Low+Vibration+Windshield+Mount but it is not for a specific model. Want to use a phone or a gps (or later, a phone with a gps ) depending on the need. Cheap holders pass on a lot of vibration to the phone and sometimes phone can even get thrown off - unless I tie phone to holder with a cord Any places other than Darly road ? (I checked out some places in Darly road. Did not find what I want) Thanks

Since recently, quite often am getting errors similar to the following when trying to view pages in auto lanka: Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in D:\Hosting\6094216\html\forum\admin\applications_addon\ips\gallery\sources\libs\lib_gallery.php on line 19 Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in D:\Hosting\6094216\html\forum\admin\applications\forums\app_class_forums.php on line 21 Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in D:\Hosting\6094216\html\forum\admin\sources\base\ipsRegistry.php on line 1221 Anything I can do other than try refresh page in a while ? Is this kind of error due to Auto Lanka servers being overloaded at times ? thanks.

My Dad has a life membership. Life membership, if it had been got ages ago, would have cost only a fraction of yearly membership renewal fees btw . He used to get AA mechanics for little little problems like car hesitating to start etc. Also he got AA drivers when going on long distance trips. The charges, much less than if you get from elsewhere and a record of the people sent is with the AA. But all this was many many years ago. I dunno how the service is now. (whether an AA mech will make a mess of your car or whether an AA driver will wreck it or hi-jack it now-a-days I cannot comment).

Boooo hoooooooo me too have same problem in a KR42 You can see this issue in the following two pictures: Oh my goodness, hope it will not spread! VVTi and others, any clues as to the cause of this? (so as to take preventive measures if possible in future). Can heat due to parking under the sun cause such a thing ? Larukh, did you fix your problem. Appreciate very much if you can post the details of the solution you found please.

Radio With Pre-Set Stations For Home Use - Where To Get?
eyepea replied to eyepea's topic in The Lounge
thanks very much for the info guys. Yep if I can find a radio with presets + digital tuning that would save some bother. The size of the Philips radio at singer that Peri pointed to is the ideal size. I have used a Sony Walkman (can't remember exact model - some years old - 2003/4 - cassette plus digital tuning and presets), but the main issue with small ones is poor reception of weak stations at my place. Dunno if newer technology would solve this problem. Tuning with a tuning knob to weak stations is also difficult even on a radio similar to the size of the Philips one. Of course the bigger ones as you say are rather expensive No issues with strong stations like SLBC but tuning to something like GoldFM is a major pain, I guess thanks to high rise buildings around my place, and perhaps the locations of the transmitters and TRC cramming some sections of the FM band Car radio, no issues with the weak stations. (tested radio out doors too. But did not test car radio indoors. Perhaps better to try that out before I go buy another car radio, if am going the car radio way). Ah requiring backup power to maintain the presets is bit of a bother In the Walkman I used, even with the batteries out, the presets were 'remembered' for a couple of days. But leave it without batteries for a week and all the presets would get lost. I guess may be car radio designs assume the car battery power is always available and does not require changing like AA torch batteries must see thanks. -
