Shift lock is there to change gears when the ignition is not on. or the change gears without pressing the brake peddle(when the engine is switched off) another use of shift lock is. if the transmission is jammed for some reason. using shift lock you can change the gears It has Nothing to do with with fuel economy. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
