Update,I got the car back last week on my return and the Engine light problem is gone, apparently it was caused by using cheap oil and not the VW recommended ones and now the car is very smooth The ABS light did come ON few times and then now it does not unfortunatley when the scanner is connected it does not show any fault codes (both the RAC and the Garage did it) as the light does not come all the time, seems to be a common issue with Passats Apart from these issues its a solid car and got many good features and when the temp went down to 3 degrees y'day it even had a warning bell and 'ice'' icon displayed, not bad for a 2002 model huh

that was quite an attack and lucky the elephants didnt pursue the attack if not they could have made the SUV topple with ease,it was more like they were showing them jeep passengers as to who is the boss around there!

Yes the purchase price of cars are low but insurance is high and so is garage labour costs at average of £ 40 per hr since im on a shortish stint there and needed a car i bought this,if I was willing to spend say £ 1500-2000 I could have got a good motor and a newer one too (2004-2005)

As a new Passat owner let me share my views I bought a VW Passat S model (2002)2000cc car in the UK on the 18th Dec,with 94 k miles on the clock,it cost £ 640! as unlike SL car prices depreciate a lot there When I went to see the car I test drove it and it was fine mechanically apart from weak shocks and a stuck passenger window and the switch for the electric shutters were broken for the driver side as a result he reduced it from the earlier listed price of £ 999 A day after buying it in heavy stop and go traffic the ABS light and traction control light came on ,I called my garage owner and he said its ok to drive for few days as I was coming to SL on holidays and to leave the car with them when I go,the very next day the red oil pressure light came on which was very worrying but it happened very early in the morning when i was returning from a party all garages were closed, oil level was find when i checked it ,two days later the low oil light came on (yellow light) but oil was ok again and it was time for me to fly out hence left it at the garage and came and due to the hols they will work on it this week and let me know. From what I read from the Passat forums VW has specified the type of oils to be used and if you use cheap stuff they get oil sludge and can damage the engine, but all who know about Passats say its a good rock solid car provided it has been looked after well As for driving I like the 2 litre engine and the performance so far,but awaiting news from the garage re the warning lights Thought of sharing my experience here hence the long narrative

Only once did I drive from Puttalam to A'pura at night between 9 and 11 and I didnt see any Elephants but the oncoming vehicles were flashing their lights but there were no cops either so I assume it was an Elephant that they may have seen and were warning others, another time on a Jaffna bound bus this year I heard the driver telling someone 'aliya aliya' but again I could not spot it this was on the Puttalam Apura road But I know people who have seen Elephants crossing the road on that stretch and as far as I know they have never attacked any vehicles

-
A friend of mine wants to know the process of selling an unreg car and what documentation that he needs to do so that he does not fall into trouble later on due to new owners usage I guess the import certificate and JAAI docs apart from that is there anything else he needs apart from the new owners letter saying he took over the car and his ID copy too?

Well I use an older Ford Laser (92 model) BJ3 engine,1300cc does 8kmpl in City with AC and 13KMPL outstation long trips with AC spare parts are freely available in but you need to go to Panchkawata (asiri motors and raninbow motors) mechanics the Lasers share the same engine and transmission as the Mazda 323 ,quite good and hardy

Well how about that deposit that the Gov introduced for motor vehicle importers is it still in force or not implemented? If a person is importing individually can he save a lot of money on a car say Leaf or Aqua?

-
We can see so many un-reg cars, suv's and vans for sale especially in the Kohuwela area any idea if these traders make a lot of prfit from each sale say above Rs 100k or is it just Rs10k's ? I also see some people buying cars and selling with garage plates privately is that allowed to sell a car you imported without registering it first?

@Crosswind,slightly off topic but you mentioned that you have sold Protons, pls can you tell me a bit of your person views of the Proton Wira 98-2001 models),I was looking for a Wira in 2013 and saw many but lot of them had cosmetic issues like broken meter panels and mafunctioning speedo and RPM meters, and broken tail lights, few cars that were good got snapped up fast in the end I had to buy another brand but I still like the Wira's as a potential next car, please can you give your views on this car
-
If I had a budget of 300k I will go for a Lancer Box or KE72 over a Daewoo as these cars are hard to re-sell and apparently troublesome
-
@ OP,lot of cars in SL have bad carbs as our baas's tamper and try to do modification without any real knowledge,my advice for you is if the carb is faulty and cannot be repaired easily try to get a new carb as its cheaper on the long run than having less fuel efficiency and always going for tune-ups (im telling thisvia personal experience with faulty carbs on a Older Lancer some years ago)
