Well now they are like "its ok you can fix the car" but the damage is done. No formal apologies either. Its back in its home now anyway. Don't get me wrong. We love the car but it doesn't feel right taking it back after the massive fuss they pulled. We are going to see 2 holdens soon. Don't know what the models are. Should be good. I also heard of this series 2 jag xj6. going to have a look at when we got some free time.

+1 Most of the so called educated people here are just a bunch of idiots who are only good at cramming. A street smart person who can't even do a simple math sum deserves more respect.

Speaking of drivers who try to intimidate others I noticed 3 altos over the past 3 days with those stupid Nissan V*P badges on them. That's just taking this to whole new low. I've also been noticing a rather poor quality V*P badge similar to the Nissan one. I think someones actually manufacturing new ones just to meet the demands of these idiots.

My girlfriend has a tag on her car. Its quite helpful in some situations. But I take it down if whenever driving cos apparently we are entitled to stop and provide medical assistance in case of a roadside medical emergency.

Good job! I didn't like the tints very much. They never look good on classics. And it seems like the coilovers are at their lowest setting.

Guys are there any issues when importing parts like engines for personal use individually? I heard you need present reasons as to why you are importing the engine and it can only be a replacement or something.

Bad news guys! One of the owner's children is pulling a fuss saying they have partial ownership over the car and its worth 5 million (in her dreams of course) when restored. The other 2 have no issues but she's the most senior and for the sake of family unity we'll have to return the car to its original resting place where it'll sadly rust to the ground cos there's no one else in the family to look after it. I'm just gutted. Its that classic case of somebody in the family resurrecting or trying to resurrect a forgotten family treasure for the the future generations and people who forgot or didn't even care it existed suddenly wanting a piece of it. And its like if they can't have a piece of it no one else can have it. So I'm terribly sorry for getting all your hopes up high. It turned out to be one of the shortest projects I've ever undertaken and rather than restoring it we are actually bidding farewell to a nice car. My cousin is most disappointed. He was in love with the classic late 50s american lines of the car and is having a hard time letting go. But we've already started looking for another worthy car to buy and possibly restore and hopefully there will be a longer thread on it

Thanks guys! Its a non runner at the moment. we haven't found the key yet and most of the lines and leads are missing or eaten away. Also the steerings turning freely and I suspect its a worn groove. First we'll be taking everything apart, removing paint and corrosion and rust proofing everything with some fancy epoxy and oxygen thingy.

I've been hearing about this old Holden gathering dust at a cousin's grandmothers house for years. But I never got to see it cos the shed was guarded by vicious-ish dogs and I rather like my bits and pieces the way they are. Anyway my curiosity got the best of me so I went with my cousin to chase the dogs and check it out. and there it was. My cousin was looking for something special to get about in. And we both decided this is the perfect car for the job, if we fix it that is. a bit of background on the car, Holdens were always somewhat scaled down copies of their contemporary yank tanks. If you feel like you've seen this car before that's because the designer took inspiration from the '56 chevy belair. Power wise it was already 20 years behind when it came out in 1960 sporting a sidevalve 2.3 straight six. But I'm guessing its a rugged sort of a slacker. Its got drum brakes all round and need i mention the cart springs at the back. I don't see anything ahead of its time about this car just hardy reliable transportation that the aussies probably seeked in the outback. But over here in 1960 it must have been a real rocketship. It still attracts so much attention. This car had belonged to my aunt's uncle. When he picked it up from Collett's, the local agent for Holden then, her dad had picked up a Holden as well. My dad says this one was called the "butterfly model" after the wings I suppose, and the other one was called "kota model". While all this was happening on this side of Colombo my mom was going to school on the other side in another Holden, which she recognized as an FC last Sunday. So there had been no shortage of Holdens in our family which made saving this car even more important. The car was actually oiled and prepared for storage before it came to rest here. According to the revenue license this car must have been taken off the road around 95. So apart from rust and the few holes on the floor it was still in good nick for a 53 year old car. Best of all most of the bits are still on it and the brightwork are still shining. We couldn't wait So we called a car carrier and this is what happened. First things first. It needed a wash. partly because it had been the home of several generations of rats. mostly because the owner of the garage, Mahesh insisted. Nice to see our people caring about health and safety, It lost a bit of paint, one fat rat and the precious 95-04 revenue license that was put on it before it was taken off the road. Now its sitting in the garage where we finished the Noah. Its an entirely different project. Its my first restoration job and it looks pretty straight cut at the moment. Most of the parts are still available in Australia and these guys are very comfortable with old cars. I'm going to the garage tomorrow morning and work has hopefully started. This can only end well.

All SR fwd engines should be compatible with the later silvia/180 gearboxes. I even found some neat wiring diagrams for dropping an sr20 into 510 sometime ago. My choice would be the sr20ve. but since you already getting your na kicks from the teg maybe a turbo.

Smart man! why not read or do something worth your time, within reason of course, when you are stuck in stationary traffic for long periods of time? Its not like we'll ever get some solid solutions from the responsible parties anyway.

Here's an ae86 that was driven only once; from the dealers forecourt to its new home. http://www.speedhunters.com/2011/08/Toyota_corolla_ae86_with_48_original_KMS_found_time_capsule_/

So I guess the mini g2g didnt happen. Saw komi and don on opposite sides of town around 4. btw komi you should lower the 510 some more and put it on lower profile tyres.
-
Im assuming your new tyres are pretty good for you to give up on upsizing the rims. Anyway I've been doing a bit of research on lightweight rims and it seems that 15's are the best compromise when it comes to handling, comfort and rotational intertia on jap compacts. Personally I'd love to see your car sitting on some mugen mf10l's. They are a bit on the pricey side. but at 4.7 kilos a piece you'll definitely notice the difference. They are forged too. So should be able to take some abuse.
-
How much do these rims weigh? they look pretty light
-
That's a 3S-FE out of a Noah
-
That's actually an e21 3 series

I'd say paint them in their original colour. Those wheels are so good looking and so exclusive they must be left original to be truly admired. Besides wheel painting is for aftermarket wheels, which these aren't.

So here I was heading home this evening when I peeked into a small used car lot and spotted a very familiar face. It was another Datsun 510! I quickly turned around and came back to investigate. Predictably it was a 4 door, a 10 sri example this time. So deffo recon, considering it had the 60s horizontal speedo. It had most of the parts on it but it had the unloved classic feel to it. The rear quarters must have been turned out of filler. and possibly by hand from the looks of things. Apparently it runs but couldn't check cos there was no battery in it and the owner was out at the time. Seems like all the hidden 510s are resurfacing suddenly.

you should be able to find it on the expressway thread.
-
Yea lets not forget the first vehicle to crash on the galle expressway is a kdh hiace. Surely thats saying something.

Noobs!

There are more e28s in sl than we think. its just they've gone through the enthusiasts past the hands of the budget minded motorist into the hands of those who simply want to turn them into convertibles or run them with whatever parts that's available. So they hardly ever pop up on classifieds and most probably died cos of lack of parts.

Guys you seem to have mistaken cvt boxes with normal planetary gear autos. Basically you get all these D321 D2L and DS+- modes on a normal auto. and those modes are actual gears cos they do in fact have fixed mechanical ratios. so when you fiddle with these modes you can hold on to a gear or max out on it. Also with these ect functions like in a toyota you get more control over the box. In cvt boxes there are no real gears. well apart from the first gear which has a fixed ratio to get you up to speed till it changes into the 2nd gear, the cvt one. In this using a belt and a cone the gearbox can simulate massively varied ratios. something like a short 2nd gear to a very long top gear/overdrive. which gives the cars mechanical top speeds upto 380 km/h and possibly more. once the cvt is engaged you dont feel any gear changes. because there are no gear changes. just a varying of the ratios which feels a bit like a slipping clutch. and this goes on all the time depending on throttle position and the position of the gear lever to give you maximum performance or economy. So when you floor it once you get past the 1st gear as you would on a toyota cvt box, you would notice the revs peak somewhere near the limiter and the speed keeps on climbing. This is also why you could be at 2000 rpm climbing a hill at 60 or cruising on a highway doing 120 while being on the same gear. As for the modes. D is just the normal mode. the gearbox is always slacking on you and gives maximum economy. in S the cone and belt are always at a shorter ratio to give you a little more response than D. not extra performance. you just feel like a you are accelerating faster cos the car is ready to respond faster in this mode. Also it holds on to the 1st gear for longer and provides better engine braking than in D mode. I use it when taking fast corners. B I thought stands for base or 1st gear. But you can actually get past the 1st gear and into the cvt too. Basically its the same as S but maintains even shorter ratios and responds much quicker. Its good for travelling through tight spaces quickly cos you get more response and engine braking and therefore more control. Also good for climbing steep hills. But I don't think its a good idea to use it at higher speeds even though its perfectly possible.
