I once tried to overtake a van on the airport road as I was in a hurry to visit a friend at the Negombo hospital. Mind you, when I say overtake, I must have been with my right-signal on for at least 1.5 km as the left hand lane was full of traffic and construction and only one lane was really working that day. Finally got copped going over those yellow/black bumps in the middle of the road. When the cop (and he was an SI) asked me if I knew what I did, I said yes I knew what I did and the offense. But I said "Do you know what HE did? I have been trying to overtake him for the last 1.5km with my signal on as I'm on the way to hospital and he did not respond to the horn and was hogging the centre of the road." I said this in a polite way, and the guy asked whether I happened to remember the license plate number of the van. as I had been staring at it for so long, I gave him the number. Not only did he let me go as I had admitted to the fault and justified it, he even claimed to radio the cops up ahead on the road and tell them to pull the van over for obstructing traffic. I've no idea whether the latter thing actually happened, but sometimes just tell them the truth and they just might listen. What if I speed up even faster when the speed-cop stops me? Traffic police aren't armed right? Can I breeze past all the police stops up front or pull over and hide? Anyone tried this? Wonder what would happen if we gave them the finger and whizzed past

New Land Cruiser 200/202 Or The Porsche Caynne S Hybrid
SeanD replied to malla's topic in General Automotive
I recommend the Diga Model Prado. -
Saw plenty of "mudalali" vehicles with tinted front windows. Nobody's stopping em. Latest trend is to buy those National Logo's you get at bookshops and stick it on the windscreen. There's even one which says "V*P." Somehow, I can't believe those are government issued so I'll have to assume a bunch of morons are trying to show off.

I checked at Futureworld, but maybe they hadn't thought of getting that stuff yet and the sales guy didn't know. Where is the place you mentioned macpc if you don't mind? If they also don't have I'll get it down, but I'd prefer buying it where I can see it as I remember there were 4 or 5 different ones for the different macbooks and I don't want to end up buying the wrong one off the web.

What about the Civic SiR drag craze? In general whatever happened to all those famous zoom zoom civics that were "making waves" in the drag scene a few years back?
-
What ever happened to all the Bodykit/bodikite/boddified cars (ricers and non) that used to run around in Colombo around 5-10 years back? And what of all the famous cars that used to Drag on saturdays? You never hear anything about them or their owners anymore. Did that phase just end overnight or is there something that killed it? And is that famous bodykit dude who used to come on TV to promote his 10 ton bodykits out of business as a result? Lots of questions

Would you know if they have a VGA connector for the new macbook pro at the resellers here? Cos they didn't when I checked about 6 months back, in fact the guys who promote themselves as the "chief dealer" didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about This is to connect my machine to a VGA cable to use for the projector.

I don't understand that second pic that has been posted above? What the hell kind of exit is that? It looks like a t junction...or is it an underpass? I'm guessing it probably is, though it's hard to tell from the pic

I don't think there is any info on whether the driver was actually after drinks or not, although it's likely the others were. Either way, I don't think we should be calling on drunk driving when the post-mortem results have not been publicised. Drunk or not, I do agree with the fact that the driving was irresponsible. Then again, we all tend to do stupid things without thinking of the consequences when we feel we're invincible. Sometimes, our luck runs out faster than for others.
-
Where did you hear that the driver was drunk?

And buddy vans...are vans allowed to go on this though? I think I'll stick to my original plan of just using the galle road and allowing the maniacs to take the expressway...hopefully the galle road will have less traffic now

The analog clock is located between the two center AC vents. Car had a glass roof. As for your comment, sometimes it takes things like this to make others wake up and not want to take unnecessary risks. Parents should also think twice before letting youngsters take out cars with too much power to handle.

FYI, the guy in the front passenger seat suffered a broken arm and a injury on his forehead, but is otherwise OK. What I said is what he told people at the house of one of the deceased who is a friend of mine. He is not in the best of shape although he insists on being there does seem to talk about it, so I would take what he says as being accurate. He says they slowed down a bit after taking the first bend but it would not be less than 150. I would tend to believe his version over the stories that are floating around, wouldn't you? The car clock hands were also stopped at 12.50 p.m. which is around the time he said. He may have been wearing a seatbelt, although the people at the back definitely were not as there were four of them. You should take it a step further when you decide to keep your smart-ass remarks to yourself.

So what's the latest on this? Has there been any improvement to the traffic after fixing these? I don't think so. Also are they sending traffic fines to the house now after using this?
-
Actually the surviving guy (front passenger seat, he escaped with some broken bones) said that they had negotiated one bend and a bug has splattered on the windscreen (not sea spray). The driver has actually opened the window to take it off with his hand as it was beyond the reach of the wipers while still at speed (around 170 I think) and they have not even seen a second bend coming up...flown right through it, hit a tree and fallen into a stream.

Not an E class, if am not mistaken it's an S350. All the worse.

Well the Lankadeepa article has a pic of some sort of waterway, so it's possible it went into that - I think a canal not a river. Possibly it's left that way in the police station due to having been found in that position? I'm assuming the damage we're seeing is more than what was there as they would have had to cut the car further to get the occupants out.
-
Yes, from what I know this is correct. Though the backseat passengers were in critical condition, last I heard.
-
I knew one of the other deceased fairly well, though I haven't met him in many years. Very sad, though I don't know the exact details of the crash it goes to show that not even the safest car in the world lives up to its reputation when pushed beyond the limits it was designed for. May they rest in peace.

Look what I found: Something that looks suspiciously like a prison evidently once stood there

Tiesto and Armin Van Buren make some great driving music, especially for long distance, about the only time I actually listen to this kinda thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pyrp2mbDGyU
