  1. Yep, sadly the truth. No way to import as an individual unless you use a registered importer. I have spoken to a few guys living here in Aussie and claiming to be sending vehicles from Aussie to SL. All of them are either scammers or don't want to share any details. I bet no one wants to share a share of their pie. Wonder of Asia where the Island has to import salt - pathetic!
  2. Good to know. I guess there is not much benefit in sending a Car from Aussie in that case. The same guys who are sending cars from Aus also mentioned the Aussie cars in SL have a demand than Japanese ones. I was thinking the opposite as JDMs would be more popular and make body parts more available in the future.
  3. UPDATE I have been told by multiple sources, there is no way to clear a car without a valid LC. In my case the AUD has to come to SL and then go back to Aus via LC. Also shipping from Aus is via FCL only. Probably the key benefit of getting a car from Aussie is so the infotainment system will be in English, however much expensive than Japan. Any contacts for a reliable and good clearing agent in SL who can handle all customs procedures and also trustworthy? Happy to spend top $$ for the right one.
  4. Yes. Dad does love the 4WD and the raised seating compared to a car. He recently had an offer for 4.0mil but not sure how much these go for. He is the second owner.
  5. Agreed. Our people abused the system. I remember when I came to Aus in 2006 for studies and wanted to buy our first family vehicle, in 2009 I had similar thoughts of sending a car. It was the days of all these permits etc and I could not get a proper answer from anyone so we ended up buying the 1997 GY series CR51 for 2.3million. It has 197k on the clock and dad has added an extra 100k to it. Engine, gear box and many other items have been rebuilt or repaired. It is slow but a solid vehicle. As time changes and the middle class grows, the need for vehicles has increased. This added to the five year ban has further added to the buying frenzy. I will keep you guys posted on how things go.
  6. Yes, completely understand the monetary control part. However they could come up with something like, if you are a dual Citizen, and have immediate family in SL, you can send a vehicle every five years which cannot be sold for those five years. People will sell on open papers etc. This would also help boost the economy by saving FOREX and possibly brining down the second hand prices. My gut says they will probably stop the imports in the near future.
  7. Thanks. I will ask dad to talk to import control. I don’t understand why GOSL would oppose a car coming in and duty paid without any FOREX leaving the country. It is a good thing for them right? They get a car and also duty as well. There are few others in my same boat. Hopefully I can figure it out.
  8. Thanks for the reply and appreciate the input. 1) I am not seeking a permit and happy to pay the duty. No record of AUD sent to SL via banks. 2) The car will be bought in Japan and shipped to SL. I know a guy in Jap (not SriLankan) who does exporting cars for work. 3) I will pay the Japanese part from Aus. We have funds in SL to pay the duty 4) Buying in Aus and sending would be ideal however cheaper in Japan and very hard to ship a car from Aus to SL. 5) Could always save the headache and buy in SL but trying to make sure we are getting a decent vehicle. 6) Looking at a Yaris Cross or a Corolla Cross. Appreciate any input.
  9. Guys, I live down under and would like to send my dad a car. Currently he has a 1997 CR51 and would like him to have something more comfortable. Has anyone sent cars from Australia or know anyone who has. Since I will be paying for it in AUD I will not need to open an LC. How does this work?
  10. Thanks MD. Big Toy Story / Man Lab fan here.
  11. Nice wheels man. You are very lucky to own some of the well sought after classics and I'm glad it's owned by some one like you who gives em the attention they deserve
  12. Nice camera work
  13. Nice car Jay and really well kept. My dad had the exact same car back in 1986/1989 period. Please don't do any mods to it as finding an original in this nick is not that easy.
  14. Spot on watchman. Same views here too.
