Vw Golf Mark1

Hi everyone,

I've been offered a Golf Mark1 diesel at a fairly low price, and I'm wondering whether to switch to the Golf due to the high petrol prices.

Can anyone on the forum with experince with VW diesels help me out to see what I should look at before commiting.

Thanks

my dad had a 31 Sri 53** golf avout 10 years ago. And he loved it... but i remember he did 2 head replacements on it.... and when he sold it it was cos the head was bust and he couldnt afford to spend so much time on it, and he found a guy who HAD a disel golf engine and was looking for a car to fit it to...

But when it was running that car was really nice... it was driven from places ranginf from horton plains to anuradhapura to yala... plus if my memory serves well, it was decently fast (for a car of that time)...

and on a episode of "Jeremy Clarkson's motorworld" i remember he spoke very highly of the car's handling...

If you dont mind me asking, how much are you being offered the car at, and hows the body condition?

Gummy be careful with VW's and especially old ones, they are getting rarer and parts are harder to come by right now. I mean to give you an example I am on the look out for a steering rack for a VW as they are so expensive over there !. So for example things like finding a replacement head will be even harder than it was 10 years ago. Its the practicalities of owning an old VW (apart from a Beetle of course) that you should consider before going down that path.

Having said that I am sure its a great car. Expect the older diesels to be a bit noisier than the newer ones though ! Also I fear very high miles on a MK1 VW Golf

Be very careful.

My first car was a 1.6 Diesel VW Jetta Mk2. Acceleration was a huge yawn but once you got upto 3 figure speed it felt rock solid. And you did not have to lift off when you went around a wide bend :)

I had it for 5 years. For the first 03 I had a guy from the then agents who came home and do all the maintainence work. The car ran like a dream and I was totally smitten with the feel of it and the incredible fuel economy - close to 60mpg.

HOWEVER (here's the warning) I went overseas for studies and left the car with my parents who let many different mechanics meddle with it for 02 years in my absence. When I came back it was a junk truck! Extremely noisy and unrefined. The engine had gone bust and rebuilt but it went bust again and it was a nightmare. I could never get the car back into proper condition and so sold it in frustration.

So the moral is I think you should consider this Golf only if its in very good shape and has been taken care of by a speciallist. If not it could be a long and winding road from hell!!!!

Well he was asking for 3.0laks. but I think I can get it for less. Only prob is I havent had time to go check it out, which I'm going to do on Saturday.

Well I dont think the engine might not matter as I can source out a jap diesel engine, that is of course if it will fit into the gearbox and engine mounts.

I will go for it only if I can make myself believe that this will be better than my Lancer which I like so much.

Checked on the net, it has 55hp that is down from the 90PS I have in my Lancer, but I'll be better off on fuel. So that is the only plus factor.

Maybe I'll wait till Saturday and see.

well, it IS a diesel, so its expeted to haave a lower hp figure than a petrol of equal capacity... but you get a higher torque figure.

Well, yeah, take a looka t the car first.. maybe if you take a few pics the guys on AL can also give thier input...

Guys I went and took a look at the car.

That was a rust bucket. Even the interior looked pretty worn out with wires coming out from everywhere. The guy said the engine was recently rebuilt, but I turned away and went home feeling very much satisfied with mine.

One of my friends used to say that Jap cars of that era rust very badly but comparing this golf to mine it was the other way round. Err.. it was in the hitad as well this Sunday.

Well yours is well looked after, golfs do not fare badly at all, but a lot of these MK1's were abused by their owners and not many remained with enthusiasts
