Steering Noises

my steering wheel seems to have a slight play. when the car is mobile ther's a noise coming from wt i think is the steering rack. it sounds something like a box is shaking. this noise is only when driving straight. meaning the steering is in a straight line. when i turn the wheel this noise isnt there. anybody had this prob????

i did.. turned out to be my rods and lower arm bushes... could be the same thing...

also your wheels need to be balanced and aligned (explains the straight line problem)

the noise is as Arc angel said could be a combination of rack ends ball joints and lower arm bushes, not very difficult to diagnose or resolve and quite common due to rough road conditions

thanx for the info guys.

i had got the lowerer arm bushes replaced sometime back. actually this happened after that. wheel alignment has been done. the steering rack was checked too.

Mines a mitsubishi colt 1982. Could anyone recommend a suitable garage to get this fixed. i had a good garage that does all the stuff for me but they've gotten fed up of me coming there once at least one a month with some prob or another.

Did u check Rack ends and tie road ends. As well as u have to check Shock absorber upper mount and Steering column.

My mechanic Wasantha should be able to sort you out, and would be able to help you with the car stopping problem you have (his charges are reasonable),

His garage is on the base line road on the left hand side if you are going towards the Kelaniya Bridge (from Borella) and is just after the rail way crossing you get after you pass the prison

Wasantha is a cool chap...very decent prices and he's a very helpful bugger... Highly recommend him

Thanx for the valuable info guys. i managed to get my engine stopping prob sorted out. bt the steering prob is still there. showed it to a couple of garages, they checked the rack bushes but they're alright. they saying stuff like get a new car now is that the way a mech should talk if he cant solve the prob.

i think i'll go see wasantha, is it on the wesly college side. is it after wesly if i'm coming from borella junc.

yep..it's on that side itself... doesn't look that big or great from outside It's before the level crossing...

What was the problem with the engine ?

and its after the railway crossing ripper on your left when coming from Borella junc
