"easily" depends on the vehicle... but bottom line is, as a buyer, you can't trust the odometer reading at face value. (if it's backed by maintenance records, reading matches the usage patterns, condition, etc. of the car, then it's probably genuine)

a reset would be quite lame ass though, cos that would make the car's appearance/condition/age incompatible with the reading.

I heard that there are tools to alter the odo meter reading easily.

Haha, a guy was on the news sometime back for repeatedly calling up 911 complaining someone has stolen some ounces of cocaine from his truck. Didn't take too long to get his a$s handed. :lol:

Yes! Even some importers do it routinely.

JAAI certificate gives the odometer reading when they inspect in Japan.

Yes Digital Odometers are readjusted for last 15 to 20 years by the help of a laptop as for my knowledge this was done first in Srilanka by a Computer skill man after spending more than 100 hours of experimenting.

Now any Odometer made in Europe or Japan they adjust to the importers requirement.

What I write under is not to the topic it is only for information of the forum members.

Few latest Automobiles come key less the are called remote key less entry system they lock the doors as well as start the Vehicle Engine if this key is lost Odometer adjuster do a fresh RKE programed what is to existing system of the car and give another spare RKE if the user wants.

I don't know about your parents. But I just wanted to get the information about digital odometers. Whether I can trust the reading or not.

He has just asked whether it is possible to do that. And he haven't said that he want to change his odometer.

Who ever the person(a pro member or a newbie) posting a reply to a question should read the question carefully before posting.

So that we can reduce unnecessary noises.

If it is a ‘STUPID QUESTION’, YOU (or anyone else) can always shut up and wait without replying.

On the original question, I wonder whether any of the agents provide with the service to check for odometer tampering? I am sure people won’t mind paying to get an honest verdict. Then again, I am not sure whether it`s possible to check for this with accuracy (if it’s possible at all), and I know that the agents are not a very trustworthy bunch.

It’s great if somebody with knowledge/previous exp. on the topic can shed some light in to possible methods of detecting digital odometer tampering. I mean if it’s changed let’s say by 40k, it might be difficult to detect by the condition of the car but might help to inflate the price and might lead to potential future disasters (e.g. not changing timing belt in due time).

What turned things around for me was when a friend of mine told me he wants to turn back the mileage of his newly bought used car, so that when the time comes to selling it, it'll match up to all the records he might have to show. Mind you, this was already a 12 year old car. I was genuinely surprised to hear him say that, cause he's not too interested in cars. Just made me wonder what other regular joes do to their cars when the time comes to sell them.

Just did a quick search and found this on a forum: "What they do is replace the chip that stores the odo reading by another one with the reading desired. This is done by writing a blank chip hooked up to a chip burner and a laptop. " (http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/technical-stuff/44368-possible-tamper-digital-odometer.html)

Guess this is how they do it rather than directly hacking in with a laptop though an OBD port or something. Either way, its good to compile a list of how to identify this crap if we could. Damn, wish every car user had the opportunity to have a stamped record from agents. :( On another note, I don’t give a crap about tampered meter readings personally, I can avoid them. Just thought this might help the common car buyer in SL.

      My father has gone ninja about getting one, despite being the new hype/fad here these are common across the world and I've seen a few cross 100,000km in Nepal and Australia.
      Seal - Looks nice, very premium interior but too low for my applications
      Sealion - Very Premium, feels very well built, BUT that 1.5L on that reasonable chunk of car with a measly 18KW battery seems like a recipe for trouble, incase they sink in value at least the fuel economy must justify that (They say it's a BYD engine - though the lore is it is a hyundai engine)
      Atto 3 - Most sold from their lot apparently, common af, Seems to be the best bang for buck IMHO, Its electric since BYD is famed for that, Interior is kinda good, the thing is larger than a vezel but not too large like the Sealion, cheap mobility I guess with less things to go wrong
      Dolphin, almost a smaller atto and again too car like and not suited for my application.
      JK nailed it on the price and distribution but the only guaranteed thing here is the lot are gonna muck up the aftersales. The Kandy center staff behave like the crew from a Govt. post office.
      What are your thoughts and opinions? Could this be the next Wagon R or is this a passing fad like the Micros of 2000s-2010s?
