  1. 1. I am not an "expert" and I did not claim to be one 2. I never said what your friend is doing is impossible. I know people who have done much much more complex engine transplants. So what your mechanic is doing isn't magic. I however pointed out the significant change that anyone driving that car will experience. It's pointless arguing about this, after the car is done, you and your friend will understand what I mean. Good luck by the way...
  2. Do you know the exact error code that was returned during the scan?
  3. I'm going to assume that Aquaman's friend is swapping the engine of a good old E36 (because he said it was a 300- car). I'm going to assume that the car is was a 318i. If so, the car would have had 113 horses when it left the factory. If it was a 320i, it would have had 148. The Toyota 2C-T on the other hand produces around 87 HP (obviously at a lower RPM due to it being a diesel). So your "everything will be the same except the engine" claim is nonsense IMO because the car will never drive like it used to when it had the BMW engine.
  4. Seriously, why is that car being towed like that?
  5. Sorry for the delay in responding. I got them from Roxy Paint in Wellawatte right opposite the Roxy cinema. A can cost me close to 500 if I remember correctly. Good luck and do post photos of the results.
  6. That actually looks quite good!
  7. Agree with NRX, if rotors can be easily sourced, then replacement is the best option. If you are still thinking of getting them resurfaced, go through this thread: http://forum.autolanka.com/topic/16998-brake-disk-facing/
  8. You can try. The OBD port is under the dashboard between the steering wheel and the centre console.
  9. If this is the case, then we can safely assume the model of the bulb is alright and that they would have taken precautionary measures to avoid damaging the bulb while installing. The car's headlight circuit needs to be checked.
  10. 1. Are you using the correct bulbs recommended for your car? If you are not sure, check what the recommended bulb is and try using the correct one. The previous owner might have replaced it with the wrong bulb. 2. Did you avoid touching the glass surface of the bulb when you installed it? Touching the glass surface of a halogen bulb can shorten it's lifespan because the protein and fat on your skin will be deposited on the bulb which will cause "weak spots" and therefore premature failure. 3. Do think your headlight has a leak that might cause water to drop onto the bulb in any way? If you're certain that you need not worry about the above points, then it could be due to a fault in your headlight circuit supplying a higher voltage to the bulbs. Testing this is pretty easy. Any electrician will be able to hook up their multimeter to the bulb socket and check if the bulbs are being supplied the correct voltage. I'm guessing it's this because you said that the bulbs on both headlights failed alternatively.

    Sat Nav (Gps) Help

Yes you are right, I think the current area that can be saved per map is 50km x 50km. That too if the amount of information in that particular area does not exceed a certain limit. If it does, the size will have to be reduced before saving. Importantly, I assumed that offline navigation is possible, but turns out it's not. Also, the saved maps will automatically be deleted from the phone in 30 days. So Crishan was right. You do need an active data connection for navigation using Google Maps. I will edit my previous post. Sorry for the confusion.

    Sat Nav (Gps) Help

If you have the latest version of Google Maps, you can search for an area and then save the map on your phone. Therefore you do not need to have a data connection always. This was introduced a few months back. So if you plan to travel to an area that you are certain will have no mobile network coverage, you can save that area on your phone as an offline map and keep using maps offline. Google for it and you can find out how. EDIT: While the above is true, offline maps cannot be used for navigation. See post #24.

    Sat Nav (Gps) Help

According to this link (scroll right down to the "Sri Lanka GPS Map Update History" section), they have been consistently updating the maps. If the map data is comprehensive enough, then you will have no reliability issues. I'm not sure about how comprehensive it is in Sri Lanka. The details are so good in Australia that the maps show speed limits, locations of traffic cameras and even the correct lane you should be on so that you can drive without disrupting traffic (these things are not available on Google Maps - at least not yet).

A popular brand in Australia is GARMIN. It's now in Sri Lanka and you can check them out here: http://garminlanka.com/product-category/on-the-road-garmin-gps-navigation/ I have personally used one for about 6 months on my cousin's car and I never missed a turn. Easy to use and they do provide map updates frequently (can simply plug into the PC and update). However, I'm not exactly sure about the quality of maps for Sri Lanka, but I believe they wouldn't be selling the product if the maps were not good. Hope someone using one of these can comment on how good they are in Sri Lanka. What I use currently is my trusty old Anroid phone with Google Maps.
  17. Good list by Kavvz. If you are in doubt and if you really want to know if a particular car is been in a major accident, the best way to tell it is by putting the car up on a hoist and inspecting the chassis as well (preferably with a person who knows about what to look for). Major accidents are usually repaired by replacing the entire set of damaged panels or attaching a "cut" from another vehicle, so the body will continue to look straight - especially to untrained eyes. Paint thickness gauges can be used to do that and they're very cheap on eBay. Doesn't scratch the paint and beeps or indicates when the paint is thicker than normal. I wouldn't call a magnet a standard way of checking for the thickness of the paint because the size of the magnet can significantly change the way it sticks on to the vehicle.

  20. According to this site, it's FS0113SL0. Is that the one?

  22. The agent probably quoted that figure because the unit is sold as the entire shift lever mechanism or as a kit that includes the indicator panel. This is usually the case. The part maybe shared with many other Toyota vehicles (Premio, Corolla, Camry etc.), so it might easier to locate it locally than you think. If you are ordering from eBay, make sure you check that the indicator plate is for the right hand driven model (because this part maybe used on other left hand driven cars as well). Amayama is not a problem since you can select the region (Japan). Yes, Amayama ships to Sri Lanka. The exact part number is: 35921-20470 according to this.
  23. First of all, this question doesn't deserve another thread. You could have continued the discussion in your old thread. I hope a moderator will merge the threads. Secondly, why on earth did you use Brasso when members have advised against using it on plastic? Honestly, that doesn't look that bad. Just learn to live with it. If you can't, then you will have to look for it in the places suggested in your earlier thread. Recon is your best bet, but finding one in good condition will be a bit of a challenge.
  24. The first thing you should do is get an ATF oil change. This is the first step of diagnosing many automatic transmission problems. From your description, it does sound like an oil change will solve the issue.
  25. Don't you already have two threads for your silencer? http://forum.autolanka.com/topic/16910-lancer-silencer/ http://forum.autolanka.com/topic/16762-beat-silencer/ Why don't you ask your questions in one of those threads?
