Import tax on hybrid vehicles cut by 50% in order to reduce air-pollution in Sri Lanka

In a measure to promote the conservation of the environment the Sri Lankan government said it has reduced the import tax on hybrid vehicles.

The tax reduction from 30% to 15% for hybrid models less than three and a half years old will take effect immediately, Deputy Finance Minister Geethanjana Gunawardena has said.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa last November said that the government in order to reduce environmental pollution will completely remove excise duties and value added tax on the

electric and hybrid vehicles which are cleaner with fewer emissions to the environment.

The Government has decided to repair 1,000 old dilapidated Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses lying idle in islandwide bus depots to solve the bus shortage along routes in rural areas.

- Fine particle pollution from diesels shortens the lives of thousands of people in Sri Lanka each year. This includes thousands of early deaths from lung cancer.

- Tens of thousands of Sri Lankans suffer each year from asthma attacks, heart attacks, respiratory problems, and various cancers associated with fine particles from diesel vehicles emissions. These particles are inhaled into the body and result in illnesses and thousands of hospital visits, hospitalizations, lost work days as well as untold suffering.

- Diesel exhaust poses a cancer risk that is 7.5 times higher than the combined total cancer risk from all other air toxins.

beside polluting the air i think this is a good thing because people in everywhere get the benefit out of it they are lot of roads in sl that dont have a proper transport service. more buses more road are cover by the bus service.

look Californikan You make a good point but i think lot of people really dont care about air pollution i agree with you in long terms we should be aiming at low emissions or zero emissions bus fleet but the problem is what SLTB gonna do about 7000+ buses that they owned can't sale them to a another country like japanese do. so only option left is to let them rust away i dont think that gonna happen. look at buses from 70 and 80 they are still running on road.

say a VERY VERY moderate 40 people take this bus per day. Thats 40,000 people who would otherwise be looking to buy their own motorcycle or car, which would emit a lot LOT more gases.

I'd bet anything that these 1000 buses (which mind you are pretty much being recycled) ill have a much much smaller impact on the environment than 40,000 new hybrids entering the roads

You both make very good points, Nexus and Watchman.

I have watched the air pollution and smog in Colombo get worse and worse and worse over the years. I can see the change over the city from the windows of the high rise building I am often in - there is a grey pollution smog over Colombo now that was not there only a few years ago. People I know who live along busy roads have to keep their doors and windows closed - otherwise the interior of their homes get covered with a layer of diesel particles from the vehicles passing by on the road. Who knows what these diesel particles are doing to their lungs.

In my observation most of this vehicle air pollution in Sri Lanka seems to be coming from the hundreds of thousands of old buses, lorries, and vans plying the roads. These vehicles seem to be the pollution problem much more than cars.

Yes, it is true that most Sri Lankans are unaware or clueless or don't care about air pollution - even if it is silently killing us, and costing the country billions of rupees in unnecessary health care, lost days of work, and a lower quality of life for everyone. Maybe these people don't realize that the vehicle emissions pollution situation in Colombo is far worse than any developed country, that foreign visitors find the air pollution disgusting, or that the cost of pollution in unnecessary medical expenses and lost productivity because of respiratory illnesses is much than the cost of a emissions control system for a vehicle.

I put responsibility for this on past governments of 30 or 40 years ago who did not have the long term vision or thinking to mandate strict vehicle emissions controls and standards for all vehicles sold in Sri Lanka. They took the cheapest, easiest, laziest route and now there is a big problem that will take a long time and a lot of money to correct. Much more than if they had done things right in the first place. Well, at least now the govt is making efforts towards reducing pollution by having emissions testing and lowering tax taxes on hybrid and electric vehicles, etc.

And at least as individuals we can have the intention to be environmentally conscious, and then make choices and take actions to be environmentally responsible in our own lives.
