harshansenadhir
thumbs up for the great work you'll have started and pm me if you need any help in this. I've restored a GR back in 2004 and project ended in early 2006 making it's my wedding car. My flickr page got some pics of the restored ones but I haven't shared any restoration pictures which I will do in this thread as time permits. Your car is an example of face lifted/post '74 GL AKA clip model which got rear drum brakes and padded steering, etc. Good to see it's interior bits are well preserved but rust got attacked the rear windscreen frame and rear wheel arches from what I've seen on pictures. You can take the windows off and treat rust but don't take off the nickel bits on the windscreen beeding. Pop it out as one piece and fix-in also the same way, or else you won't be able to put it back without damaging the nickel parts. further, the face of this car doesn't have the original look, probably due to the fact that someone later might've messed with it. Download some images from web and ever refer to my pictures, you would be able to see what original light surrounding and facia panel should looks like. Some great sites I've obtained info, catalogues and pictures are listed below if it helps. The later got pics of my car before restoration. (http://www.garage24.net/504ww27.htm). Good luck for your project. www.504.org www.garage24.net

harshansenadhir
Got some breathing space during weekend and thought of compiling all restoration pictures I had for the betterment of other people whom are into restorations now. There were more pictures but cannot access them from here, so bear with limited pictures but I'll try my level best to cover as much as possible. This is how it looked before the restoration. Rust cannot be seen from this picture, but the wheel arches, sills and floor boards were attacked by rust. The paint was not in good condition and I wanted to re-paint it in white to use as my wedding car. Uploaded with ImageShack.us This is how it's started. The facia panel has been removed and is a must if you're planning to do a better job on a 504 as lot of mud and dirt used to trap inside and can result in corroding the body. Uploaded with ImageShack.us another view of facia panel removed. Some rust were already treated and anti-corrosive paint has been applied. That was my rule of thumb to them. That is to apply anti-corrosive as soon as a welding job has been completed. Uploaded with ImageShack.us floor boards getting replaced. Note the steel rods welded to the pillars to prevent mis aligning the pillars due to removed floor board and the sills. Note the complete sill assembly were cutted off. Uploaded with ImageShack.us now it's got new sills. Complete sills assembled outside and finally fixed to the car. It fitted so well and the efforts were well paied off. Note the new sills in brand new metal color. I used 18 gauge original metal sheet throughout the restoration to ensure original rigidness of this body. some more views after sills were fitted. harshansenadhir
post #2 due to image limitations.. the dash boards and interior were completely removed. All four doors were taken off from the body and windshields were removed after sometime and it was removed together with the beadings and metal bits and pieces. I didn't remove the hood upholstery as I didn't want to damage in trying to remove and re-fitting. the rear panels are being treated. The left rear panel and the wheel arch were horror stories to look at even. Culprit is the fuel tank as it holds some mud and dirt between the inner rear panel and the tank itself. This was a usual place of 504's to get rusted. Rather than welding small pieces I wanted them to do the complete panel. They used cardboard templates and the images I've provided in preparing this to get a close original finish. rear left panel has been fixed and body filler applied. a Big relief. the right side wasn't an issue at all. Some minor work was sufficient. the rear facia panel
harshansenadhir
this donor car gave lots of nickel bits and pieces and a door frame. Nothing left in solid metal in this otherwise. bought a load of junk from an old 504 enthusiast and these were very useful when I was fitting the car back throughout mid nights and needless to say I was just couple of days behind the big day. harshansenadhir
lot of hard work has done and it recieved multiple base coats before a high quality body filler has been sprayed. and the final filler coat has been sprayed. I was very pleased with the shape it was getting and was impatient to see it in the final coat. and now, the car is being receiving the final coat. 2k paint, debeer paint and Dupont lacquer was that. little expensive but results were just beyond my expectations. harshansenadhir
took it home after more than a year .. still the seats needed fitting as I was yet to receive the new seat covers, all done in white color. This was the day before the wedding day and was quite happy to complete (almost) the project on time. again, took it back to the service station to do complete fluid change and a service as it was stationed for more than a year. enjoying sun rise after more than a year... note the re-done door upholstery .. new tires, new rims and new hub caps.. another view .. look at the grand view almost brand new 504.. taking a break on a weekend .. This was my daily ride until it was replaced by the 406.. was a superb and a solid ride.

I've sold all three 504s i had as maintaining them were becoming an issue as old generation peugeot mechanics and tinkers were hard to find. The guy who did the restoration gave up on corrosion repairs as it wasn't that profitable and during the last couple of days of my project he got a heart attack and had gone through a surgery too. So i couldn't complete the next GR which was awaiting its restoration and i slowly decided to let go of them my beauties. You better take the dash off as in GL it's a metal dash board which has a crash pad fixed on to it. So it should be rust proofed. This picture is of the glove box and i think you should be able to repair it. If not, try bmc 'watta' in panchikawatta. You should be able to source a one in fair or better condition than this. The Don
Harshan, I'm really sad to hear about your workman, as that was exactly the question I was going to ask. There are very few quality body work shops in Sri Lanka, and my experiences with them have been so awful, it's always put me off from a restoration project. Whenever something rusts away my instinct is always to replace rather than repair, and as much as possible try to manage by myself. And if I was you I would have never let go of that 504 after everything you went through and the memories. French cars were better built then ! My father loved this car as they were so comfortable and always took the 504 in his office instead of the much newer Isuzu cab or the van he had at his disposal whenever he could manage it ! harshansenadhir
@jd - true that and i prefer these threads over fuel consumption shit at any cost. awaiting for more pics i mean porn from the op. @don - now its not that easy to find quality and humble workmen who does a job which worth the price they ask for. This guy was an exception and i'm getting paint work done by him to the date. Only issue is he can't take tinker work any more as he had underwent an open heart surgery, so meddling with metal is no more feasible for him like the good old days. Yeah, you're spot on about letting them go. But in life you always have to choose, so did i and sometimes i regret this decision. Will try to do it again when i can shift my priorities back to vehicles, i mean financially. So your father too had a 504? Yes, and i admit it's more comfy than the 406 for some reason. Remember, this statement is backed by my mother in law. So it has to be 200% accurate.

Quick things you can do are, repair the front shock absorbers as they're repairable and a front overall bush kit (it was 2750/-) when I last changed them about 4 years back. Also in GL there are rear CV joints and axles. Check for quality of them and repair or grease pack if required if grease is bad and if dust/mud trapped inside, you'll destroy them soon. So better check these. Do an overall fluid change, the brake, transmission the diff and grease pack (at a service station) following. The front ball joints (this is not possible in GR but in GL you can) and tie rod ends, Torque tube (where the drive shaft is hidden in, this tube starts from the tail end of the gearbox and goes to differential box which is mounted on to the body) Steering rack. (Also if possible, take the steering rack out and check the quality of the rack piston. Replacing with a brand new piston would cost you about 800 rupees and it's well worth it. You can disregard if the rack is smooth and rattle free. Best thing of this generation french cars is almost all spares are repairable even front shock absorbers!!. Optionally you can take the lights out and clean the lenses and reflectors. I used to split them and clean them and re-fix using silicone adhesive. take out the panel just behind the hood (bonnet) and observe for any bottlenecks in water draining lines. There's a one in the middle and two at each sides. Usually leaves and other small particles blocks these drain lines and water tend to accumulate. This can result in excessive corrosions, so better be cautious. Clean this area with a pressurized air and apply some WD40. However, if you have any plans to do body work in the future, you can do it at that time. Don't forget the rims. Take them out, remove tires and see how bad it's corroded. I don't think it's feasible now to spend for a brand new set of rims as back in 2005 one cost me about 6500/-. You can try to restore the rims and even make them tubeless!!. This I've done with the 504 (L) (maroon color one in the pictures) I had. Tinker guy repaired them with small metal pieces and one leaking spot has been identified on the side wall of the rim where it cannot be welded. Used brass welding and filled that small hole and grinded and smoothed. Only burden is each rim you have to fit a tubeless tire (a test tire I've used) and check for leaks and then redo tinker work. All these are options depending on the level of restoration you wish to dive into. Don't think I'm making them mandatory or such. Awaiting for more porn

I mean you look at the French underground system and they have rubber wheels on the outside for stability and comfort ! A bit eccentric I though but that is the French way. My father didn't own this particular 504. His car of choice was a Corolla KE20. He used to work for what is now DCSL and he had the choice of a few vehicles for his official use and his favourite one was the 504, though everything else were a lot more modern than that. This particular car was in pristine original condition as it was maintained by Carmart throughout its life with no expenses spared. The funny thing is the MD was given a Hyundai Stellar and I wonder what he would have given to swap that to an old 504 How much do you think one in really good condition cost these days (diesel or petrol)? Was your car original diesel and what is it like finding parts for an old Peugeot diesel ? Please if you know come accross a good boy shop/ worker who actually understand the age old craft of metal beating, does not mind taking direction from the customer (rather than just ignore and do as you please and the end result is unsatisfactory) please do post it on the forum or message me. I'm yet to find a chap like this in SL And it really isn't a matter of cost because a good guy is worth a bit extra. Its a pity your guy hasn't trained a good "golaya".
