Angle Grinder With A Brush Attachment

Crosswind

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Is it a good idea for a novice to use an angle grinder with a brush attachment for a bit of DIY cut and polish job? How do you avoid swirl marks? Any recommended brands for brush attachments? I don't really need an orbital polisher right now.

Thanks in advance

PS. This topic has been discussed before but the search didn't give me some of the answers I wanted

I would say the best would be to use a dedicated polisher with a wool pad (eg. http://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Tool-Design-ATD-10511-Polisher/dp/B000M5ZXDM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311737950&sr=8-1). If you just need it a simple job to restore the paint color get a cheap orbital polisher (eg: http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-WP900-6-Inch-Polisher/dp/B000077CPT/ref=sr_1_5?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1311738037&sr=1-5).

For a novice I would recommend the later as the chance of damaging the paint is less with the low powered orbital polishers. Right now I'm using a Ken polisher (about 15k, there are cheaper chinese stuff for about 10k) with a bosch pad which seems to work well. If you are going to buy a professional polisher such as the KEN one, start with a low speed. Don't rest the polisher on the car while operating and agle it so that only about a third of the pad hits the car. Only use higher speeds when you feel like you are capable of it. Higher speeds brn through the clear coat if you are not careful. I guess you would need a bunch or experience to know the boundries of a polisher. If you do end up messing up a little brasso on the affected area can help restore it.

Let me know if you need any other info.

Yes it's for a simple color restoration job.

I already got an angle grinder so I thought I might give it a try. But I was concerned about swirl marks. But it looks like I can end up doing more harm than get a few swirl marks on the body.

Need to look for a simple orbital polisher. Any recommendations (apart from KEN)? How about B&D? There's gonna be a B&D power tools sale very soon.

I do know there are a few other choices out there if you are alright with going for one without a waranty. The KEN comes with a 1 year warranty. I know link had another brand in stock for something like 10k with a 6 month warranty IIRC. I must warn you that these professional polishers weigh a lot.

Not sure what range of B&D polishers we have here but the link I provided you before to the small polisher is one I owned. All I can say is that it works fine for minor color restoration but it lacks the power for anything more for example; removing imperfections in new paint jobs.
