Why cant the embassy sell the cars to the local market? I know they say they have removed all the hazardous parts but it still seems hazardous to our ocean. Are all the embassies required to do this?

:violent-smiley-030: what a stupid thing to do!!! May be they can't sell it since they would have imported it tax free but they could charge tax at the point of transfer to new local owner. What a waste.

Why would the local market require a bullet proof car? Like the one on the link?

Im pretty sure there are legislature barring the common citizen from owning a bulletproof vehicle, as it could be used for the wrong reasons.

Now as far as other vehicles go, they auction all vehicles with public notice via print media. Schokman & Samarawickrama handles these auctions. Few months back when I was in SL i was at an auction where they auctioned two Prados, a toyota avenir or avalon, and a few other cars that were owned by the US embassy. And thats pretty much what every other embassy does as well. And these vehicles come out registered in FZ-xxxx plates.

Eventhough you think it is hazardous to the ocean, and which i agree too, it happens around the globe. Thats how they bury huge ships too. But should commend the act of sending it back to germany for recycling.

The ships are stripped of all material and only the steel hull is sunk to make artificial reefs.

Out of curiosity, how much do these auction vehicles go at? Is the starting bid on par with local market prices for that model/year, or is it possible to get a good bargain?

Actually the fear here is that the cars will get into the hands of ...lets say undesirables .. the us embassy by policy does this - and have done so to a no of landcruisers ...etc (all of the bullet proof type) but the cars are essentially stripped of all ancillaries and its the shells that are dumped to create artificial reefs into deep water (so that they can't be retrieved)

I guess you wouldn't want Bin Laden going around in a bullet proof car formally used by the US embassy :)

However a few bullet proof cars were disposed of into the local market - one famous R.D. S... is supposed to be using the car formally used by the Swedish or some Scandinavian embassy that closed down

Cheers,

A 65-9xxx series LC Prado went for 46/=. Which was one of those super basic models with heaps of corrosion. The one im talking about has been sitting in one place for more than a year. It was in a sorry state. Unless your into the game of fitting bodies and such I doubt its a good deal.

Few years back the gave away bullet proof merc in the STATE lotto. So must be another reason for sinking the cars. Might be too expensive to remove communication gear and other state secrets and return it to OEM spec for a sale.

more than any high tech gear the single biggest issue is the fact that these are bullet proof cars.

I know of a guy who's got a BP merc but he too got the car after having to let go of all the glasses...

so at least in case of an issue...he can be shot through that :)

And i dont see a big issue in either recycling or sending them to a watery grave.

It's a well known practice all over the world and we sure can use a few more reefs!!! natural or otherwise.

With all the much our people are dumping into the sea and other waterways...any possible pollution caused by a sunken BMW is nothing!

What is one sunk BMW shell that can form a reef and bring benefits, compared to this?: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pacific_Garbage_Patch

I'm not sure whether you mean 46 rupees, 46,000, 460,000 or 4.6 mil??? All seem either too much or too little to pay for a car in the condition you described

Sean don't even bother going to car auctions. They are filled with wanabe car sales men and cut-but guru's.

Sorry for been so inquisitive but who is this R.D S... fellow????

Got a Camry from an auction once and that was pretty cheap and no problems, but wasn't bulletproof, atleast by that time, so maybe it's that which is causing them to dump it?

huh!!! what are you refering to as 'It's that'????? plus i thought we established the reason behind the sea burial.

Oh my bad it was 4.6 million. XXX gave the best description for car auctions.

Well, I'm not a green activist or actually I don't care about the polution but the matter that a 7 series is leaving the country for good is what I hate. Yap, bullet proof is the main issue as mentioned by other I guess. By this time it probably has been through a crusher and is in bits and pieces in some part of Germany. :(

Is it an 18- "S" class Merc by any chance..? cos one came to my Mazda garage with an engine mis. The owner didn't want to take it to D*MO claiming it costs too much..
