  1. You are right, JLR totally refuses to service any vehicle thats not sold by them. The German brands do so on registering with them after paying a hefty registration charge. But the biggest downside to unofficial imports is the lack of manufacturer warranty. Personally I could never live with a European car without warranty. Especially JLR cars.
  2. I'm afraid its not possible. Only the official manufacturers can send brand new cars from UK to SL and that too only to the official agent in SL. E.g. you can get a range rover brand new imported from UK from the official dealer here but the other "car sale" dealers would have to buy one there, pay taxes, register, cancel registration and then ship to SL.
  3. Hello @top tip , With the current system that is in force since November 2017, for a USD 30000 govt officer permit you can import any car of any cost or engine capacity. Your permit only entitles you for a Rs. 3 million discount on duty. In the case the duty is less than or equal to Rs. 3 million, then you are entitled for a 30% discount on your duty. Thats all. No benefits like the previous years so choose wisely.
  4. Yes, the Baleno is stylish because it is a newer model than the Vitz which has been around for a while now. But I hope you are aware of the fact that Baleno is built in India and not in Japan unlike the Vitz. Apart from that the Baleno is superior to the Vitz in terms of looks, space and the 1.0 Boosterjet engine on the Baleno is much better to drive than any of the engines on the Vitz. Having the 1.0 Boosterjet engine with manual transmission is a sure winner. Being a petrol only (non hybrid) Suzuki, Baleno maintenance cost is quite low plus sourcing parts is very easy give that they are made in India.
  5. As far as I know, it is a must to display your vehicle's revenue licence along with the vehicle's ID card on the front windshield. These two documents are first hand proof to show that your vehicle is road legal even when the vehicle is parked and the owner isn't there. I haven't seen the gazette but afaik and heard it is true....
  6. @iRage Apparently the 3rd generation Swift hasn't yet been launched in India. Its highly unlikely we would get this model from India anytime soon since its one of the hottest models in India with waiting periods over 6 months initially. Also the 1.0 turbo (without mild hybrid system) is available right now only in Japan, Europe and Australia. From what I inquired with an importer, you could bring in a 1.0 (999cc) turbo swift automatic from japan for little under 4 million including the dealer's cut.
  7. A moment of silence for the permit holders who were expecting millions for their permits. The new budget proposals curtails the benefits of the permits especially those issued to govt servants (USD 25-30k)
  8. Hello @VTEC , With all due respect, I own a vezel and four of my closest friends also do. We all bought it in a gap of 1 year ranging from mid 2014 to mid 2015. Of all the five vehicles just 2 have crossed the 50K mileage mark and they started showing signs of gearbox problems. FYI they were all regularly serviced at competent service centres as well. Mine showed signs of jerky gear changes at the 25k mark itself. My advice above to @Buddhi_1 was completely based on my experiences with the car and not because of the so called "srilankan trait" that you mentioned of. I hope you have noticed that I had nothing to say about the 2016-2017 models since I haven't owned one or know anyone owning one. This I totally agree. Its the best crossover you can get for that price point and the reason we all went for one in the first place. Cheers.
  9. Hello SNJ, Sri Lanka has got a plethora of Toyota SUVs for sale in the country. Your options would be 1. Toyota CHR 2. Toyota RAV4 3. Toyota Fortuner 4. Toyota Harrier 5. Toyota FJ Cruiser 6. Toyota Landcruiser Prado 7. Toyota Landcruiser 200 aka Sahara 8. Toyota Hilux (Pickup truck SUV) While most of them are Japanese manufactured, the Fortuner and Hilux are made in Thailand. I guess you could figure out their asking prices either on the classified section of this site or on ######.lk since vehicle prices in Sri Lanka tend to fluctuate a lot. Cheers.
  10. No, its not a wise decision to buy vezel. 1. Dual clutch problem - yes its quite jerky and not the smoothest of gearboxes. Moreover 2014-15 models are rumoured to be having reliability issues with regard to this. Solution: late 2016-2017 models are considered to have been rectified. Can go for it. 2. Maintenance - Not very high compared to European vehicles but higher than the erstwhile Toyotas. 3. Resale value - Initially it was good but not now. Sri Lanka was flooded by Vezels from 2014 onwards and there are so many for sale on the market that the second hand asking price has dropped significantly and is expected to be so for the next couple of years when current owners of vezels start selling off their cars. My suggestion: Go for a Toyota instead. Reliable, low cost of maintenance and decent resale value.
  11. Please consult one of the many professional dealers available. They might be able to help you.
  12. @iRage So the dealer I mentioned earlier sent me a quote and man it was so confusing that I've decided to put and end to all this by just going directly to the customs with a permit and asking them which grade I can bring down from a list of quotes. Thanks for your insight anyway. I'm done hearing alternative facts from different dealers. Time to take things on to my own hands now. Peace out.
  13. @iRage So one of the dealers i spoke to mentioned that a vehicle value of upto 4,200,000 yen could be calculated into the 30K permit since the valuation here is sans any taxes there and so on. It all sounds bizzare to me but if the guy could get it done, thats good for me. @kush Yeah exactly what i was telling above. price purchased there doesnt matter, if it fits in the valuation system here, alls good !
  14. @iRage Thanks for the heads up. I finally came across a dealer through a facebook advert who explained the whole thing to me and actually said its possible to get a mid spec turbo harrier for USD 30k. Dunno if his words are that reliable. Anyways I'm gonna investigate further and fingers crossed i could get a turbo rather than the NA engine.
  15. @kushThank you for the info, I shall talk to the dealers regarding this matter of engine capacity not being a problem although fitting a hybrid version of the harrier within the USD 30k limit seems impossible for a new car. @MADZ I'm sorry I wasn't aware of the caps = yelling thing. I'll make sure to cut out such typos here on. Kindly excuse me. @iRage when i meant 2000cc I meant the NA gasoline version since one dealer advised me that the 2000cc Turbo car cannot be brought down for permits. My usage is mostly around a maximum of 500km a month hence I'm not very bothered much by losing out on fuel efficiency figures from a hybrid. I shall look into it if I could bring down a turbo version as it sounds great from what I just read on the website. Thanks for your detailed info on this subject, even some dealers couldn't explain as in detail as you did. cheers.
  16. Thanks for the info guys. I have finally made my mind to consider buying the new 2017 Toyota Harrier. So I was wondering if I could get the 2000cc petrol or the 2490cc hybrid version. I had been inquiring around if it is possible to bring down a 2490cc hybrid on a permit but car dealers themselves arent sure since the car is above 2000cc but has tax concessions since its hybrid. ANYONE HERE COULD EXPLAIN ME IF IT IS POSSIBLE TO IMPORT HYBRID CAR ABOVE 2000CC FOR PERMIT ? P.S. I had inquired with several dealers I know and they themselves didnt sound sure about it, and thats why I'm asking here. THANKS.
  17. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INSIGHT, AFTER MUCH CONTEMPLATION I HAVE SORT OF NARROWED MY LIST TO THE FOLLOWING 1. TOYOTA HARRIER 2. MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER 3. NISSAN XTRAIL 4. KIA SPORTAGE 5. HONDA CRV ALL OF WHICH I'VE CONSIDERED THE GASOLINE VERSION ONLY. WOULD BE GRATEFUL IF ANY CURRENT OWNERS OF THESE CARS COULD GIVE A HEADS UP REGARDING THEM. *EXCUSE THE CAPS, KEYBOARD GONE CRAZY*
  18. Thanks DON SHAN but I'm looking for a new unregistered car.
  19. Hello friends, I have been mulling on the idea of upgrading from my current car. I currently own a Honda Vezel hybrid 2015. As of now I have no serious issues with the car, just that I need more space for my family and our bags. Also since I live in the up country region, I feel the vezel is seriously underpowered when loaded on the hilly roads. My budget is upto a maximum of 14m and I'm looking for an SUV a class above Vezel. And strictly not a hybrid that would be reluctant to carry load around the hills. Thanks.
  20. Hello friends, I am planning of buying an old bmw e30 1987-1990 model and restoring it to mint condition for my own collection as the first car in my collection. could someone with knowledge on this car and on restoring old BMWs give some valuable tips before buying this car and also suggest me where in sri lanka i could get parts for restoration ? this is my first time at restoring an old car. Is their anything in particular i need to be aware of ? thanks
  21. Maintenance cost and value for money is good as it is with India cars, RELIABILITY IS A BIG NO !!!!! INDIAN CARS = 100% UNRELIABLE. Happened to own an Alto and Maruti800. worst cars I've ever had. Problem is that Indian cars designed in India exclusively for the Indian market are terrible cars. Celerio happens to fall in that category.

    Cruise Control

Cruise control is something that comes best when factory fitted. I feel it isnt safe to fix an aftermarket device risking your safety for a few more km/L.
  23. The link below clearly explains such BMW owners (not all of them; ain't stereotyping anybody !) http://www.galwaydailynews.com/2015/01/15/scientists-confirm-link-bmw-ownership-asshole/
  24. D*MO does excellent service for Mercs in Sri Lanka. They are very helpful (though expensive) and get things done in time. Also the quality of work is excellent similar to Toyota Lanka. Unit#d Mot#rs for Mitsubishi is average.
  25. For those travelling between Bandarawela and Nuwara Eliya, there is a superb rotti shop passing the keppitipola town. they serve nice hot rottis with some amazing parippu and unusual mint-katta sambol for breakfast ! yum ! Also for those travelling between Bandarawela and colombo, there is a small hotel passing balangoda town to the left from bandarawela to colombo direction called Maligatenne hotel, they serve some amazing Yelapa and some nice patties.
