Terry, from what I know the power steering system in the K11 is a conventional fluid and pump based power steering system. As such any competent garage should be able to sort your problem out. If you tell us where you live perhaps somebody can recommend a garage close to you.

Likely causes are

1. The belt driving the power steering pump has come loose or is broken

2. There is a leak in the power steering system leading to fluid loss

3. The power steering pump has failed

4. There is an issue with the steering rack

Don,K11 has a electronic motor driven power steering system, not the fluid and pump system. As for you Terry is is most likely that your electric motor is to blame for this. Might as well be a problem with the steering rack as Don had pointed out to you. Cheers!

I see, apologies. I was writing from my experience of the K11 Nissan Micra, the European version of March which has a conventional pump based power steering the system. The K12 has an electronic power steering system though.

All the K11s I've seen has EPS, basically that means the power assist is provided using an electric motor.

Does the dashboard light for steering (a steering wheel icon or the letters EPS) come on at the time you loose power?

Most EPS issues can be attributed to an ailing battery. The symptoms are the steering is sluggish when you start in the morning but becomes ok after driving for a few minutes.

If this occurs when going over pot holes or bumps, it can be due to a loose connector.

What's the mileage of your vehicle? EPS motors are pretty durable and a chance of them failing early is pretty slim.

As for a place to get it fixed, I would recommend that you show it to the agents (A*W)

the later version of K11 known as cup holder model has EPS and some are converted back to hydraulic rack 'n pump system, rather the conventional power steering.

with all due respect to what all have pointed out, try to relate or isolate this scenario, like when this happens, is it totally illogical and irrational or you can relate any other symptom or incident to it for an example the engine shudders at the same time or it happens when you apply brakes or something. Then the chances for a better diagnosis is high. I personally believe this could be as simple as loosen battery terminal or as someone said a loose connector in the EPS system, or it could be the worn out brushes of the EPS motor, a general/common failure point of motors.

Hi,

I am also having the same issue. Tried replacing the control unit, rack with motor and the sensor near the steering. Also, checked the battery and also tried using several almost new batteries.

Still, when I start the vehicle few hours after parking, the PS light appears and steering gets harder. Then I keep it idle for few mins(around 10mins) and restart the vehicle. All good then.

I don't know what to do and from where to check. A member from A*W also diagnosed that and still no luck.

Anyone, please share your thoughts here. It will be very much helpful for all of us and anyone visit this post someday.

Thanks.
