Friends,

Some vehicle owners are filling their tires with Nitrogen gas rather than using normal air.

Can somebody please explain the advantages and disadvantages of using Nitrogen instead of normal air in tires?

I think this topic was discussed in detail some time back. You can do a search and find the thread.

But in a nutshell; it's no good for us common folk. Unless you're running something like a Nissan GTR or some other ultra high performance vehicle, you're just gonna be wasting your money. Air is cheap, reliable, and proven for years. :)

Ever heard of a concept of Selling Ice to Eskimos, Sand to Arabs and more so, Air to Idiots?

Op should fill his tires with hydrogen. Theoretically since hydrogen is right at the top of the periodic table it would be the lightest gas you can find, so when you fill your tires with hydrogen you will be reducing the overall weight of the car (however small it may be). The positive result of this is that your car will be slightly lighter, thus increasing your fuel mileage by a number too small you probably won't be able to figure it out.

So welcome to the future OP. The future of axios and 110s with hydrogen filled tires.

BTW OP, on a serious note, Air contains 78.09% nitrogen. Take some time and think about that for a few days. Do you really think an extra 20% will help you increase fuel mileage? Oh yeah and btw unless your tres were mounted in a sealed room that had onl nitrogen present, you would have a tough time getting your tires upto 100% nitrogen.

On a side another note, I now this one guy who swears by nitrogen filled tires and actually said it helped increase his fuel efficiency by 3kmpl. For some reason people think nitrogen is a magical gas created by a big company like mobil.

Just pump the regular air by your self of give 20 bucks for guy, if volunteered to do it for you. And ensure to check air pressure regularly, even if you feels pressure is sufficient by looking at the tyre.

Some people like hard, bumpy rides. Believe me it's sickening action-smiley-015.gif

I'm guessing women? :D

That'd not end up too nice looking wink.gif I meant performance oriented people even with smaller cars cuz it makes the tires damn hard, tires were like rocks. Gives better handling, should be good if you ever take the Tibby to a track :)

Yesterday I went to petrol station in Katugastota to pump air and noticed they have removed regular air pump and one next to it is locked saying only for heavy vehicles. So I decide to check from another place and when turn the vehicle and noticed they have installed Nitrogen gas pump and charging rs.50 per wheel.

I used to check tyre pressure twice a month. There is no way I'm gonna use nitrogen gas because I am very much ok with regular air. And giving some bucks if they helped me pumping air is different to forcing us to go for nitrogen gas by removing other options.

Also what if other filling station also removed their regular air pump? Is there any law for filling stations on having air pumps? Or is it voluntary step by them?

afaik...having a working air pump is mandatory for all filling stations. it's not optional, it's a must.

that's why even when nitrogen is offered they can't take away the normal air pump

What happens when you get a flat tire and there isn't a nitro station in sight? Is it OK to run 3 with nitrogen and one with normal air? :D Or do you need to deflate all four and refil with normal air :P I've seen some new E-classes with all their tires deflated at the Horton Place shed awaiting a nitrogen fill. They're probably doing more damage to their tires by deflating them fully while on the car than by running on normal air.

some of these people have swallowed this nitrogen thing with hook line and sinker :P

roughly 80 of atmospheric air is nitrogen, the ioc thing is only 98% nitrogen...

even when you pump "air" you're "loosing out" only on 18%....

i'd stick to air any day :D

felt a little differnce in handling on the B4 though... i guess itz coz of the low profile 17's

the difference you felt is from the car bieng slightly lighter as the driver was lighter due to less money in his wallet.

Seriously there is absolutely no way you would feel a difference in handlig due to a less than 20% change of nitrogen in your tires. Some people say their car drives smoother after they detail or wash it.....

yeas, heard that IJ used to wash his car before every drag, back in the day when he was getting woody for Vin Diesel.

what is the petrol station name MkX? any ways you can always use tyre shops to check your air pressure.

well for ur info.. i was pumping n2 for the astina for sometime.. didnt feel any differnece so stopped it.. but the b4 has a better feel.. i am going to switch to normal air and see if its a placebo effect... which i am sure it must be.. but for the astina it did absolutely nothing

Does anyone know if we can buy some type of pump to put air at home ourselves? And how much would such a device cost? (I wouldn't mind doing this as I have a pressure gauge already, and would much rather inflate cold tires anyway).

Well you can get a smaller air compressor and an air chuck. If you don't want to invest so much, the staple street food city had those little 12 v compressors that hook up to your lighter port, takes a while to fill it up though and you will need to let it cool down between uses. I think it costlike 1000.

Cool, I think the latter option would be fine. Will look in to it, many thanks
