Hi Guys,

My bro is going to buy a Volvo S40 year 2000 model..even though I personally sick with Jap cars..my bro is curious about trying euro cars..he just sold his previous BMW E36..and wants to buy this one...the price is 2.1 million...my question is any of you know about Volvo S40????? and is it worth to buy for that price??? need your expert ideas guys..

The S40 is a comfortable easy to live car though it lacks the driving dynamics of the E36. Some would have Ford engines when it was under Ford's stewardship though I've seen some with Mitsubishi electrics (not sure of who had supplied the engine)

In Sri Lanka they did not have the same appeal to people as Mercedes Benz and BMW.

thanks guys...my first reaction for this price also was that it's too high...but i didn't know much about Volvo..so,i'm gonna convince my bro for a better option..maybe another BMW...

I dont understand, shouldn't the E36 go around 3mil or something ?

Why would someone go for a lesser car ? (unless there is a financial issue)

But my initial reaction is if there isnt such a case dont go for a s40. if you have driven an E46 and move to a s40 thinking its a better car trust me you will be disappointed. Safety wise might be better but you'll feel like you just divorced angelina jolie and married camilla parker :P

Well an E36 goes around half the price you mentioned Stiggy, the 325i/323i would be slightly higher.

Maybe your bro could go for an A4? Even S40 isn't bad, but for a lower price. Or a S70/60 or 80 even? Or a VW, lots of choices in the Euro car segment even at that price :)

Actually when I was looking at some cars, there was a black manual 2000ish S40 2.0T/1.9T4 (the owner only told it's a turbo, didn't know the capacity) for 1.2M a few months back

ha ha good example mate.. :P I have already convinced him to forget about S40..he sold his previous E36 for 1.8 million..now he's looking for something around 2 million to 2.2 million...maybe he's tired with Angalina jolie..I have already made his mind set to forget about Camilla parker...do you think that he can go for an Audi..(maybe like Julia roberts) for a change??? any suggestions?..

I know this is too expensive but it's a late 2nd gen http://www.autolanka...ad.asp?ID=41238 and it looks like a good example of an Audi :) So yes, think your bro could go for a late 90s 1st gen facelift for that price or an early 2nd gen

Its strange isnt it, an audi a4 2004 model going for 2.8m and a bmw of the same era goes around the 4.5 - 5.0, with both cars probably costing similar brand new. A merce of the same era would be closer to the 5.5 - 6.0 range

yes..i am also finding bit difficult to understand this trend..for Jap cars it's quite obvious the price trends...

Hate to criticize cars but S40 is a disaster.Never enjoyed the limited period i used one.

A4 is a better car My boss owns one and he is very happy with her.

Went with a friend to check a 2000 manufactured S40 yesterday and what a downer that car was. Did Volvo forget to add a touch of quality to the S40 for some reason or something like that?

That wouldn't be the black S4 badged car that is sometimes parked at the car park of HeliTours on Galle Road :)

I know of a few who owns 2002-05 audi a4's. Very reliable machines. And at prices these things go, u can buy one of them and a small econo hatchback for the price you pay for an axio. Don't really understand why an axio is still perceived as value for money!!! :violent-smiley-099:

Machang, when Stephen Hawking takes a break from trying to figure out the String Theory and where the Universe is headed, this question MUST be put to him... :)

No one can really comprehend the logic behind the Axio-Allion Mania... :)

1. May I ask the configuration/specifications of that E36 he sold for 1.8 mill??

2. Is he looking for just an upgrade, or is he particular bout the specifications of the next car.. like YoM, Brand, drive train type, options etc.??

I'm of the opinion that he should step back from the Swede.. another German would be better.. but that just MY opinion. Note, that cars are not classified for their brand, but just the maintenance factor here.. I mean, there was a Porsche 944 S2 for sale, but then it ended up in a Museum 90km away from Colombo. Why...? no takers...!?
