Hi Guys

First of all, VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of you. I have just imported a Defender 110 single Cab. Thinking of converting it to a 5 door CSW. Anyone knows or could recommend a place who will sell the Body parts and so on?

I have been thinking of this option as well, it seems too good to be true. A brand new puma110 Single cab ( Chassi Cab as its called ) is Approx Rs 6.Mn , A full 5 door conversion kit was advertised as Rs 3 Mn so add another Rs 500k for registrations/labour etc and Vola.. you have a brand new 110 station wagon for just Rs 9.5 Million !!!

But here is the catch, the single cab will need to be registered as P so tecnically this is illegal and you never know at which point the Police will start to crack down on it and ask u yo pay the full duty for it, its similar to the cut vehicle. Then u are screwed.

But this is the part which I cannot understand, most Toyota Hilux single cabs are reg under L , but why should the Defender be under P ? Has there been a change in the HS code/duty etc ?? ? The importers I spoke to mentioned it must be p and not L.

If I am not mistaken the L is for lorry , and now since the GOSL has totally taken off the duty , if a 110 single cab brought down as a truck/lorry , then the 5 door conversion maybe worth the risk....

Also when its a Defender the Sri Lankan police think twice before pulling u over..... :)

Also take note that if it's on a L plate you'll need a lorry license to drive it (legally). I think that's one reason they started issuing smart-cabs 'P' numbers. And you might have problems getting entry into some areas where heavy vehicles are not allowed. I remember lakshan had a similar problem with his forward control when going to a hotel around galle-face.

so I guess you have to weigh the such random inconveniences against the $$$$$ savings.

I'm not too sure on how the declaration of a vehicle at importation (at customs) and registration (at the RMV) are linked. Anyone got any info on this?

Why spend so much time + money when you can find a specimen for the said amount.

Check AL classifieds there are a few options.

Saw a 08' white puma 110 CSW for 8.4 mils advertised on a popular weekend paper not too long ago.

Lets not forget how the body permit ponzi scheme came crashing down.

If its P then it could be a 08 single cab converted., else it should be K, like this one, ( pretty good price )

But this one is P

Even though the white one in Carbon's post has a winch, the newer black one with the K plate is a much better deal I would say. Is the white one over-rated by the owner or is the black one too good to be true (hence something fishy)?

Another option is to buy the double cab version of the Defender. Less seats compared to a CSW but can be legitimately used as a proper dual purpose with 5 seats. I saw a specialist selling pre registered puma double cabs around the £16K mark, brand new on Ebay about 6 7 months ago.

And there were a couple of dark-silver ones in the h!tads and i've seen a some on some car sales too.. pre-owned from the UK, and selling in the 6.0-7.0 mil IIRC.

I think the double cab is the best looking version and probably the most practical. It really does have the best of both worlds. And should it be a 130 double cab, now that's as hot as it gets! :D

Yeah, the problem is in the UK Land Rovers hold value quite well. You have to source it from a market where it's not King of the off road vehicles. I actually prefer the 110 to the 130. The 130 looks unnaturally long :)

To be honest, considering what people are selling old L200 cabs for, I recon the Land Rover double cab should be a bit cheaper than 6 million after being cleared. I wonder if somebody can put the duty calculation down and I can confirm whether this is the case. The information I am missing is the agent valuation.

You are right there is some issue with the agents valuation, and that's why the 110 double cab price is much higher than a L200 also imported from Uk.

But it will be a matter of time when they start making them in India.

Funny enough, I think the only time they will consider it for domestic Indian market not for export. LR's big cash cow is the Range Rover and the market for these vehicle is such the buyers are very sensitive about the country of manufacture.

I think there is already a company in Malaysia which assembles the defender from complete knock down kits. It's not very difficult :)

Hi Everyone

Thank you for all your feedback. After 02 weeks of research and running around, I managed to find a contact who got all the genuine kit to convert my Defender pick-up to a 5 door. Asking price for the complete kit with all the seats etc... is RS 2.8 . Do you guys think its worth it?

Further, I managed to confirm that there 02 different HS codes at customs when its come to clear the Pick-Up. If you go for the cheaper HS CODE you will be issued with a "L" Plate= Lorry . Then you will have a problem to convert in to a 5 door. "P"=Dual Purpose will cost you bit more to clear through customs but you will have no issues to convert the vehicle as you wish AS LONG AS BODY IS NOT GOING THROUGH A CUT AND WELDING Job.

better check authenticity of all these stories. Each importer says their own version of the story. Time to find the facts. I met this source you are talking about today and was told something slightly different
