Lamborghini Gallardo Coming To India

Recommended Posts

Posted

The luxury cars of the world, such as Maybach, Bentley Arnage and Rolls Royce, are already here in India, for those with the moolah. Now for those in India with the moolah and the racing spirit, here's the Lamborghini Gallardo.

The pricing of the Lamborghini gallardo in India is expected to be announced in 2006 January, quite possibly at the Auto Expo 2006 in New Delhi. The supercar is expected in the first quarter of 2006 - and therefore there is a highly likely chance that the Gallardo will be exhibited in New Delhi at the Auto expo 2006. Expect all newspapers to have large falshy photos of the Italian supercar then.

The distributor of Lamborghini in India will be Exclusive Motors. Rahul Grover, manager (sales) told the press that "the plan is to bring the Lamborghini Gallardo within the first quarter of next year." The price of the Gallardo in India is expected to be Rs 1 crore and Rs 1.5 crore. Gautam Singhania, race car freak and son of Vijaypat Singhania, Sheriff of Mumbai must be licking his lips in anticipation. The company expects to sell no more than 3 units of the car in India in 2006.

Automobili Lamborghini Holding SPA is part of Volkswagen's Audi Group. Lamborghini recently rolled out its 3,000th Gallardo in early December 2005.

It remains to be seen though how Gallardo, which competes with the likes of Ferrari's F30 and Porsche's 911 Turbo, fare in India. Stephan Winkelmann of Lamborghini said that "The problem is not the money in these countries, but the infrastructure."

Lamborghini said that while uit saw growth potential in India, it was 'more concerned with the infrastructure in India'. It should be. Supercars do not ride well with their extremely low stance on rough roads, and even your average Indian bump could possibly strand a Lamborghini. In 2006, perhaps we could catch an occasional Gallardo floating on a small hillock of a bump. Also, there are almost no roads in India where one can safely driev at even a third of the speeds that a Gallardo is capable of. Practicality is almost nil, and there is a highly likely chance that a Lamborghini Gallardo in India will end up only as a show-off car, to be rolled out for that rare exotic car rally or party, or to be parked in frotn of a mansion for guests to admire. We shall see.

Lamnorghini has already said that it sees growth opportunities in countries such as China, India and Russia.

The Lambo Gallardo has a starting price of approximately $75,000.

We will keep you updated with more news on the Lamborghini Gallardo - meanwhile fans are expected to feast their eyes on the photo gallery we will be putting up shortly on this site.

2 Fast 2 Furious

Nandini Sen Gupta

NEW DELHI: It’s 2 am and the normally-bustling MG Road in the heart of Bangalore’s upscale shopping district is deserted. Slowly a small stream of onlookers start gathering on both sides of the road as a clutch of bright graphic-laden cars line-up at one end.

Half an hour later, the crowd is almost 3000-strong and the cheering lusty even by cricketing standards. For the next four hours, the 25-odd vehicles race each other on the 400 metre stretch, totting up some amazing horsepower performances. Super-fast Zens and frisky Citys rub mud-guards with pricey Beamers and tweaked Lancers.

There are bikes too...local Yamahas and the mandatory Hayabusas. At daybreak, the winner gets a tumultous applause. The crowds disperse and the cars disappear before the morning rush claims the heart of the city. Once again...

kay, that’s not an Indianised variant of Too Fast Too Furious we just dreamt up for you. Welcome to the world of drag racing. It’s about speed. It’s about glamour. And it’s about youth. It’s an entire sub-culture driven by machine and machismo. And gen-next can’t wait to join up.

Says Saatchi & Saatchi COO Subhabrata Ghosh: “Drag racing has become a night culture in places like Bangalore. It’s a complete underground movement and it is acquiring a phenomenal following.”

Ghosh should know. Long-involved with the drag sub-culture in Bangalore, he has helped tweak enough engines to make them race worthy. His guru, king tuner Raj Hingorani, is a legend in the performance modifications business. A US-resident, he routinely flies back to Bangalore to work on dragster vehicles.

People like Hingorani have seen this street culture gain both horsepower and reputation. In the past three years, what started off as a niche motoring hobby has acquired a cult following. “Bangalore is the Mecca of drag racing,” says Hingorani. “It has around 700-800 super bikes and some 300 dedicated racers. If you include the part-time participants, the number is as big as 1000.”

Phew! Those aren’t small numbers by any stretch of the imagination. But then again, drag racing isn’t a niche sport any more. According to auto expert Hormazd Sorabjee, one of the pioneers of the drag culture in India, there are as many as 2000 racers in Mumbai alone. Two trends have triggered off this petrol passion.

First, “the cars which are available right now lend themselves to performance tuning which wasn’t the case earlier,” says Sorabjee. Also the drag rules are pretty simple and the cars that race are cars that “you and I drive”. It gives the audience the adrenalin rush of watching a race-sprint from start to finish. For the participants, it’s a Schumi simulation.

Already, the drag culture has spread to at least four major centres —Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Coimbatore. And each of these cities have their own circuit specialities. In Mumbai, for intance, the celeb quotient is high with participants like Gautam Singhania and Kunal Kapoor (Sachin Tendulkar, John Abraham and Jackie Shroff are regulars at drag dos, though they mostly watch rather than race).

In Coimbatore and Chennai, local racing genes have turned drags into circuit races, “similar to F1” says JD Madan, son of shipping tycoon and motor sports enthusiast KD Madan. “We’re used to messing around with cars and we have race tracks, so it works out just fine.”

Like Sorabjee and Ghosh, Madan too feels the do-it-yourself positioning of drag racing has made it popular. “Drags use a lot of creativity, there are not too many rules and the skill levels required are not too high,” he says. “So the spread is pretty huge.” The Madan father-son duo typify the diversity of the drag sub-culture.

While KD drives a BMW M3, JD has opted for a tweaked Indian Lancer. It’s an Evolution 6 vehicle, “turbo-charged, complete with a four-wheel drive” and kitted out with an ultra-performance MIVEC engine. At its last outing, it left a Ferrari 360 gasping for breath!

Sorabjee feels that the trigger and the spin-off from this “big performance culture” is the modification market. According to unofficial estimates, the modification business in Mumbai alone is around worth Rs 10-12 crore.Tweaking a normal Zen with a high-performance Esteem or Baleno engine can cost around Rs 50,000. But imported MIVEC engines, even used ones, cost at least Rs 1.5-2 lakh.

Although not all racers have that kind of moolah to spare (many opt for local used parts instead), most of

the dedicated racers spend upwards of Rs 2-3 lakh on modifications alone. The Evolution Series Lancers can cost upto Rs 50 lakh and the total drag money swishing around in this subterranean culture is between Rs 50-70 crore at least.

Drag racing isn’t cheap. But it sure is personalised.Motorsport father-son duo of Karun and Vicky Chandok feel it’s the power quotient that makes this sport so popular. “A normal Lancer cranks out 85 bhp but fitted with a MIVEC engine the output goes up to 240bhp,” says Vicky. “If you use nitrous oxide as fuel it’s even higher —upto 280 bhp. That’s burning rubber power, from start to finish. It’s hugely entertaining.”

Beyond the entertainment, it’s also about grease lightening. “A lot of modification information is available on the net and people often tool around with kits to customise their cars,” says Madan. It’s a do-it-yourself pitstop experience that gets the adrenalin rushing.

That’s also why, says Ghosh, the audience for this sport is so overwhelmingly young. “There are 10 distributors of high-end drag race accessories and products to modify a vehicle,” he says. “So people tool around quite a bit. I would say 100% of those who drive up for drag modifications are below-30 years old.

Drag workshops typically rebuild every part bit by bit and use most of the spares from standard engines. That’s also why the Zen and City are the two most preferred drag cars.(In bikes it’s the Yamaha R6, R1 & the Hayabusa). Drag modifications don’t damage road-worthiness though racing carbuerators and filters do have to be taken off before you drive to work.

Post-tweaking, a Zen can do 0-100 kms under 7 seconds —that’s comparable to a Porsche or a Beamer—while a top-end Toyota Supra can crank out 760 bhp, a shade more than the Continental GT’s 600 bhp. For the auto industry, the drag benefit can be a big add-on. Says Dilip Chhabria of DC Design:

“This sub-culture will encourage people to spend on cars. That’s how all automotive cultures are born.” Indian drag enthusiasts believe the sub-culture can acquire the kind of depth it enjoys in home base America if Bollywood beams out a bump-and-grind version of Too Fast Too Furious.

Even if John Abraham doesn’t trade in his Hayabusa for a Lancer Evo, this nocturnal sport should find it’s cult growing. When it comes to thrills, you can’t beat burning rubber.

The way the Indian economy is going, anything is possible.

A recent statistic shows that each year close to 40,000 new multi millionairs (in US$ terms) are made in that country. Second to China. Given the current growth trends India and China are expected to give the western economies a run for their money in the not too distant future.

Thats 0-100 KMPH in 7. Surely thats not that impressive? 0-100k in the sub 5 seconds is impressive.

Yep in the world of super cars it aint much.. But times under 7 seconds is SIR/VZR territory if you think in local terms..

'many cases'??? I dont think you realize the magnitude of a 1/4 mile in under 10secs.. <_<

The CRX was and still is a fantastic car.. but times under 10 seconds?? I bet thats with a stock engine right??:lol: Look closer at the specs on those sites you visit- no way are those road cars!

I'm more offended by the "learn from the Indians" comment than anything about the city. Over here they modify civics cos they are cheap, over there they do citys, which are probably cheaper since its local manufacture for them. But learn from India? I can count the good things to come out of India with the fingers of one hand. (And thats mostly women)

And that's Pericles, u uncultured cretin. Not that I expect anyone to know where that name comes from.

just one question..........since some of us are in the "India bashing mood".....what exactly have we in Sri-Lanka done right?

At least the indians can boast of being one of the fast growing economies in the world with all those so called "made in india crap" making their mark in world market.

I still think SL is ahead in terms of the drag scene... when I said learn from the Indians... I simply intended to commend the Indians for having done a good job with the light weight City... I know that City is a single cam and a good tune up short of a good drag car, but with appropriate modifications the "light weight" factor can be exploted to good ends...

Pila I know that you are adequately knowledgable about cars and that you share a good spirit for motro sports... but you sometimes misunderstand what other guys post....

let me start clirifying to you point by point.... :)

1) where have I mentioned stock engine CRX???? ... to start with Mr. Pila we were in the talk modified cars not standard stock cars(obviously implied)... when will a City or a ZEN do 0-60MPH in 7 secz in std format???

So let me make it clear to you again "I WAS ALL THE TIME REFERING TO MODIFIED CARS NOT STOCK ONES"

2) And yes a modified[not at all road cars] CRX can do 1/4 mile in 10 secz... I knew what i was talking about. you refuse my comment at the first glance so fine itz your right... :D

3) However much road unworthy a CRX is when it is modified to do 400m in 10 secz, I find it more impressive than a Ciyt or Zen doin 0-60mph in 7 secz... you had been dazed with City Zen 7 secz thin so I tried to support Pericles' argument by providing an even more outrageous example.

4) "Many cases" refered to many cases of insanely modified ones... I didnt expect the word "Many" to be intended at "Mass Produces/Stock"... So I guess that answers your concern happy da???

Hope I made my self clear this time :)

[let me come up with the links i have found with that regd. later!!! not tryin to shy away from the point]

I agree with you Isuru and everyone else on the fact that SL Drag scene is quite advanced. I have been to drag races in several countries around the world and must admit that what I saw in SL is quite impressive.

In fact we in SL is quite good at a lot of things (motoring and other wise). But it stops there!!

What we lack is organisation and development. I have always been saying that the Drags in SL should be taken to another level. Made into a main streem sport in the country. I would love to see our guys taking part in Drags out side of the country. But at this point in time, it still remains far from becoming anything other than organised.

We in SL have such a rich motor sports heritage than most other countries could even dream of. The same goes for a lot of things. But ( I say it again) organisation and development seems non existant. Along the way we seem to get tangled up in other things and lose focus.

By the way, India has a driver in F1 and All road going and track racing Ferraris are powered by Indian software.

The irony is, whilst other countries are able to boast about what they produce (good or bad), we in SL continue to boast about what other produce. Where is the sence of pride in that??

Posted

I still think SL is ahead in terms of the drag scene...

i really don't htink we can comment on this coz none of us experienced the indian drag scene. i'm sure there are equally die hard fans of motor sports in india as there is in SL... for all we know, it may even be better..

only difference is that we have more variety on cars... but not for long

when i was in india, the ambasador was starting to be a rare sight....

Every country has itz strengths nd weaknesses... if india is good at givin you good bargain hunts and ppl still wanna buy them lined up in queues... fine!!! got to respect them, learn from them... but sure we can always appreciate any country for quality products and criticise some other for bad quality , but the attitude should not be to hold the guy who does somethin beneath the guy who apparently does nothing... this is where I most agree with Duncan :P

Duncan, old man, I been in an India bashing mood from somewhere before 1997. There are, of course, exceptions to every rule, but for me, Indians are asses until they prove themselves otherwise. IMO, I count a grand total of 4 ppl who have done that.

I aint mad or angry. I said I was offended. Look it up.

A. Indian F1 driver now has no team to race with. I saw a couple of his qualifying sessions (u can concentrate on one guy instead of keeping track of the whole field). Granted, the guy was fast, but he lacks control. The greats know when to push, and when to back off. This guy doesn't. However, he has had only one season in a relatively bad car. I just heard he has joined Williams as a test driver. Lets see what he can do there.

B. That is not a great vote of confidence for Ferrari software. My personal experience with Indian software.... Well in this, u can take it from a professional, Dunc, we are leagues better, even with a smaller resource base.
