I am interested in buying a 406 model car. Need to find the most suitable car for me -D8 or D9 ,LX, GLX, Rapier, Executive....

I went through some old posts on 406, seems there is not much fuel efficiency difference on 1.8CC and 2.0CC engine.

What is the average price of a 2000-2002 model car? I saw some adds varying from 1.3 to 1.7mil.

What are the major things that I need to check when buying the car?

Like Toyota corolla 121G grade, is the GLX having the highest market value in SL?

There must be a post, explaining the differences between various trim levels of 406. Better to go for a D9 as it’s newer and better equipped along with better safety ratings compared to D8. Executive is the fully loaded top of the range while GLX being the full option version with all required features minus additional frills and bells and whistles. GTX is with electric seats on top of the options of GLX. Rapier is a UK specific model with again lucrative features such as chrome surrounded gauges in the meter cluster, black shaded interior panels instead of typical teak look otherwise.

average price varies and I’ve seen some selling at very close to 2.0 mil mark and the diesel version with leather interior and full options might demand little beyond 2.0 mil.

Check for proper maintenance records and ownership. As a rule of thumb, I avoid Peugeots gone to many hands and the ones with non-original modifications. Get it checked with a Peugeot planet diagnosis for ECU and other electric system related issues. Check for starting delays and idle issues and response related issues when you're taking it for a test drive as any of these might cause ECU, Injector/fuel rail related, pump and ignition coil related issues and might cost you a bit. If it's one of reconditioned 406, brought down from UK, the odo meter is in miles, so multiply by 1.6 to find out the kilometer reading which you're familiar with. Temperature should stay at 90 degrees mark after a 5-10 minutes of a drive. Anything beyond isn’t acceptable for 406, D9. Check for t-belt replacement records and other suspension related repairs. Also check whether all the options are working as non-working option might not be a simple fix (example, if memory profile option isn’t working for electric seats, that can be as serious as a blown seat control ECU)

Post in this forum if you need any specific advises on your observations.

Thank you very much, I also went through some of your details in old posts. Actually one of my friends 206 car make me interested on Peugeots. I do not run daily, so fuel is not a very big concern for me. But I have few questions to clarify.

Is it possible to get a full checkup of the car at the agent as Toyota company does?

What is the average service cost of the car and can we do it at normal service stations(like A_to Mir_j?

I was looking at the prices last few weeks, seems some people sell it at fair prices. I like to go for a diesel, but do we have parts if it come across a repair - lets say full engine overhaul?

I saw this car - http://www.autolanka.com/ad.asp?ID=159652

What do you think of this car?

There is a Diesel HDi put up for sale today. Check that one out. Its the best 406 in my humble opinion. Taxi drivers used to use that one and they were good work horses.

I thought you wanted a diesel?

Do not buy a Peugeot and go to the place you have mentioned. There are independent

specialists for Peugeots. These places will have the Peugeot planet for a proper diagnostics. For a petrol engines it’s the 10W40 semi synthetic (Total oil Recommended 5500) + Oil filter (1200) + Air filter (2750)+ labour cost. If you have to overhaul there are parts here and it is cheaper if you got a someone in England you can buy an complete engine for about 250 pounds plus another 120 for shipping.

Thank you all for the replies. I would prefer a petrol one. Does the agent do the full checkup of the cars, so I can get the car there and get a full report.
