Question

Hi Guys. I own a Mazda Familia Bj5p 2000 manufactured year, AWD, 5 speed manual transmission vehicle. Comes with all 4 disk breaks. Does anyone know how the AWD system really works in this vehicle. Need to know what it really stands for (if its All Wheel Drive or Automated Wheel Drive?) and what are the benefits and negatives can expect  from this vehicle. It does  around 9.5kms per litre in citiy limits with heavy traffic and 10.5 or 11kms per litre in the highway and out station. Is that normal on a AWD vehicel?

If it is awd the rear wheels will activate only if there is a slip detected from the front wheels. I think the fuel consumption you mentioned is OK for a car with an awd...!

Power is available at all four wheels almost all the time. Benefits - Better handling, acceleration without rear dunking, better grip, better front rear weight distribution. (And CV joints gets less strain as well) Cons - Heavier, bit higher fuel consumption against 2WD, more parts to maintain, used to be harder to sell because for many fuel consumption is the key factor to buy a car. Fuel figures are pretty good.

Well that means its All Wheel Drive system. Is it the same you call full time four wheel?? What are the main problems comes in these models?

Nothing abnormal really. Apart from what I mentioned in the cons. Gearbox is bit bigger and stronger than the normal BJ5P. Stick with it and you may even not like FWD cars anymore.

Thanks simpleone for the reply. I was very keen on knowing the system in this. Many people also said that the rear wheels are being activated at your hard acceleration and then it automatically switches off in a while.

I think after certain speed or less stressful situation like freely going down a hill, all 4 wheels are not powered. But I'm not quite mechanically sound to confirm this.
