The Japanese government reprimanded Toyota Friday and called for improved recall practices in an 2004 accident linked to faulty steering. The incident is under a criminal investigation.

The transportation ministry issued a "guidance" order demanding that Toyota Motor Corp. report to the ministry by Aug. 4 steps the automaker is taking to better monitor reports of defects and to improve communication within the company between sections overseeing recalls, design and other operations, a ministry official said on customary condition of anonymity.
