Mazda Familia BJ5W - engine delay & miss

Rahman Mohamed

Question

This is a 1999 Mazda familia BJ5W 1.5L manual transmission. There is an engine miss at times, plus when picking up from low rev/speeds there is a delay of 3 to 4 seconds before any power comes. Even if the accelerator is pressed in full the car does not get any power until 3 to 4 seconds pass by. This does not always happen, but happens regularly, especially when picking up from idle/traffic stop. Also at times the RPM fluctuates at idle, again this is also not all the time. When going up a hill and a lot of power is given to the engine, a ticking sound can be heard from the engine. All of these happen intermittently.

Below are the repairs already done due to this issue, but has still not fixed the issue.

1. Replaced plugs

2. Replaced plug wires

3. Replaced both coil packs

4. Replaced Air filter

5. Replaced Fuel pump and fuel filter

6. Engine tune up was done including throttle body clean

7. Air flow sensor was cleaned also tried another 2 (used) air flow sensors, still no difference

Anything else that can be done?

This seems to be a  Failed ignition coil but a you have replaced it - it's a mystery. Did you do a scan by any chance ?  Perhaps the Computer box ? Lets see what others say as well.

Yes it was scanned, an airflow error code appeared, but mazna motors reset it and said it's fine, they cleaned the air flow sensor and put it back and I believe the code was not there anymore. But i've tried a couple of used air flow sensors from japan lanka and it did not work.
I was also wondering if it could be the car's ECU (computer). What would be the diagnosis and fix for this if that's the case?
